What To Pack For Gorilla Trekking In Uganda, Rwanda

What To Pack For Gorilla Trekking In Uganda, Rwanda

What To Wear For Gorilla Trekking In Uganda – Gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda is one of East Africa’s most popular tourist activities. However, many visitors make the mistake of dressing inappropriately for the experience, such as wearing sandals or shorts, which are not suitable for this type of activity.

The terrain in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Uganda) differs slightly from that of Mgahinga (Uganda) and Volcanoes National Parks (Rwanda), yet all three parks are located at higher elevations, making them rainy, humid, and cold, especially at night. During trekking, you may encounter uneven or non-existent trails, which can be challenging to navigate.

As you plan your gorilla safari in Uganda or Rwanda, it is essential to dress appropriately to shield yourself from the cold, as well as from thorn pricks, nettles, and insect bites such as those from flies and soldier ants.

“Pack Right – Dress Appropriately”
Here are our recommendations for “What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda”:

1. Long-Sleeved Shirts and Long Trousers

Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers, such as khaki or jeans, to protect yourself from branches, nettles, thorns, and other hazards. Waterproof trousers are ideal if available. Ladies should wear comfortable bras due to the potentially strenuous hike. Neglecting this advice and wearing shorts and t-shirts may result in scratched skin.

2. Waterproof Hiking Boots

Opt for sturdy, waterproof hiking boots, as trails can become slippery when wet. These boots provide stability, balance, and ankle support. Avoid wearing white sneakers, sandals, or other inappropriate footwear. Also, wear thick socks and tuck your trousers into them to guard against fire ants.

3. Sturdy Gardening Gloves

Wearing gardening gloves might seem unusual, but they provide protection when supporting yourself on branches or vines and shield against nettle scratches. You can remove the gloves when you meet the gorillas to take clearer photos.

4. Rain Jacket or Poncho

Since trekking takes place in the rainforest, it can rain at any time, even during dry seasons. Carrying a rain jacket is essential. A poncho is another option, which is commonly worn by trackers, rangers, and porters. Opt for a lightweight version that can be easily folded and stored in your backpack when not in use.

5. Wide-Brimmed Hat

A wide-brimmed hat is recommended to protect your head and neck from rain or sun. Although a baseball cap can be worn, it doesn’t provide the same level of protection for your neck. If you don’t have a hat, you can purchase one from local craft markets in the area where you are trekking.

6. Insect Repellent

Apply a generous amount of insect repellent to protect yourself from various insects encountered during the trek. Consider bringing insect repellent in your daypack if you’re participating in a full-day Gorilla Habituation Experience. Additionally, apply sunblock cream on exposed skin to prevent sunburn.

7. Warm Sweater or Cardigan

Surprisingly, it is important to bring a warm sweater or cardigan when trekking gorillas in Africa. The early mornings and nights can be quite cold, with temperatures in Mgahinga Gorilla Park or Volcanoes National Park often around 10°C/50°F, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest around 11°C/52°F or even lower.

This is why many luxury lodges provide fireplaces in cottages or rooms, and some offer hot water bottles to keep guests comfortable during the chilly nights. Having a warm layer with you is essential for your comfort.

What Is The Color For Safari Clothes?

1. Avoid Bright Colors

While bright colors may be suitable for dinner back at the lodge, they should be avoided during safari activities in the jungle. Bright colors can attract unwanted attention from wildlife.

2. Wear Neutral Colors

Opt for neutral colors such as light brown, green, and khaki when on safari. These colors blend in with the natural surroundings and are recommended throughout Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, and Botswana.

3. Avoid Black and Blue Clothing

Steer clear of black and blue shirts during jungle safaris, as these colors can attract tsetse flies and other insects. Choosing neutral colors will help keep you safe and comfortable throughout your safari experience.

Clothing Recommendations for Safaris in Africa:

1. Long-Sleeved Tops or Safari Shirts

Long-sleeved tops or safari shirts provide protection from insect bites during gorilla and chimpanzee treks, as well as during walking hikes. They also offer safety from direct cuts caused by tree branches, thorns, vines, and nettles.

2. Long Trousers

Jeans are a popular choice for hikes and treks because they are durable and provide good protection. They also tend to hide dirt, keeping you looking clean during jungle adventures.

3. Shorts

Shorts are best worn at the lodge or during the day when the sun is shining. They are not recommended for gorilla and chimpanzee hikes, volcanic hikes, or nature walks, as they expose your body to potential hazards like tree branches, vines, and thorns. If you do wear shorts, use insect repellent to protect exposed skin.

4. Safari Socks

Choose cotton or wool socks for comfort and protection for your feet.

5. Underwear

Keep your underwear clean during your safari by bringing a small amount of detergent to wash them regularly.

6. African Safari Hat

A brimmed hat is essential to protect your face and neck from the sun. You can purchase one at Ugandan craft shops if you don’t already have one.

7. Safari Jacket

A lightweight safari jacket is recommended, as rain is common in the evening even during dry seasons. It will keep you dry and comfortable during jungle hikes.

8. Swimwear

If you’re staying in upscale lodges with swimming pools or plan to swim in lakes like Lake Bunyonyi, Lake Kivu in Rwanda, or Lake Mutanda, pack a swimsuit.

9. Pajamas

Pajamas are important, especially if you’re traveling during the wet season. The weather can be cold at night, particularly in areas like Bwindi.

10. Light Sweater

A light sweater is useful during morning and evening hours in the jungle to keep you warm.

Gorilla Trekking Packing List

1. Citronella Soap

Citronella soap is crucial as it serves as both a cleansing agent and an insect repellent. It also has antibacterial properties, providing added protection for your skin.

2. Insect Repellent

An effective insect repellent, such as RID, works against both mosquitoes and tsetse flies. You can buy it online and apply it directly to your skin and clothing.

3. Sunblock

Sunblock cream is essential for shielding your face and eyes from the intense sun of Equatorial Uganda.

4. Hand Wipes

Hand wipes are convenient for preventing the spread of germs when water is unavailable. You can easily find them in Africa.

5. Sunglasses

Sunglasses provide protection from the direct sunlight, making your safari experience more comfortable.

6. Malaria Medication

Consider bringing malaria medication such as malarone or doxycycline. These are effective treatments for malaria and can be a crucial part of your medicine bag for the safari.

7. Toiletry Kit

Pack a toiletry kit containing various items tailored to your needs, such as hygiene products and personal care essentials.
