25-Day Wildlife, Gorilla, Chimps & Uganda Adventure

Uganda has earned its nickname “the Pearl of Africa” for good reason — nowhere else on the continent can you track mountain gorillas through misty rainforest one week, watch tree-climbing lions the next, and still have time to raft the source of the Nile, meet the Karamojong cattle-herders of the northeast, and cruise a channel with 500+ hippos in between.

This 25-Day Wildlife, Gorilla, Chimps & Uganda Adventure is our most complete Uganda journey — built for travelers who want to see the country properly rather than rush through the highlights. Over 25 days you’ll trace a full loop of Uganda’s finest protected areas: white-water adventure at the Source of the Nile in Jinja, the waterfalls and coffee gardens of Sipi Falls, a cultural encounter with the Karamojong people near Moroto, big-game drives in remote Kidepo Valley National Park, boat cruises and game drives in Murchison Falls National Park, rhino tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park, the bubbling geysers of Semuliki National Park, the crater lakes and royal history of Fort Portal, game drives and tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park, gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the terraced hills of Lake Bunyonyi, and a final wildlife-and-relaxation stop at Lake Mburo National Park before returning to Kampala or Entebbe.

It’s an itinerary built from first-hand knowledge — our guides have driven every one of these roads and slept at nearly every lodge on this route — and it can be tailored to your pace, budget, and interests. If you’d rather experience the same regions in a shorter window, browse our 18-Day Uganda Safari or 20-Day Wildlife and Nature Experience, or contact our team to build a fully custom trip.

Visit the official Source of the Nile on Lake Victoria and the Mahatma Gandhi memorial, then continue to the spectacular Itanda and Bujagali (Bosowoko) Falls on the Nile. A roughly 10-hour drive through Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve to Moroto district, with stops at local markets along the way. Lunch en route, dinner at your lodge. Overnight: Moroto

Day 5: Karamojong Cultural Experience & Transfer to Kidepo Valley

Day 6: Game Drive in Kidepo Valley National Park

A full day exploring one of Africa’s most untouched wilderness areas — savannah grassland, dry riverbeds, and scattered forest home to elephants, buffalo, lions, cheetahs, and over 475 bird species. Visit the Kanangorok Hot Springs en route, spotting wildlife along the way. Overnight: Kidepo Valley

Day 7: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park

Drive south to Uganda’s largest protected area (3,840 km²). Visit the top of Murchison Falls, where the Nile forces itself through a 7-metre gorge before plunging into a thunderous, rainbow-lit spray. Overnight: Murchison Falls

Day 8: Game Drive & Boat Cruise, Murchison Falls National Park

Morning game drive through the park’s northern sector for elephants, lions, Uganda kob, buffalo, giraffe, and hippo. After lunch, take a 2-hour boat cruise to the base of the falls, spotting hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife along the Nile. Overnight: Murchison Falls

Day 9: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Track southern white rhinos on foot with an experienced ranger at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — one of the few places in East Africa where you can approach rhinos this closely and safely, and Uganda’s only sanctuary for the species since they were poached to local extinction. Overnight: Ziwa area

Day 10: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

Drive via Fort Portal/Hoima road to Kibale Forest, home to 13 primate species and over 325 bird species, and widely regarded as the best place in Africa to see chimpanzees. Overnight: Kibale

Day 11: Chimpanzee Trekking & Bigodi Wetland Walk

Morning briefing followed by chimpanzee trekking through the forest (up to one hour with the chimps once located). Along the way you may also spot red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, and black-and-white colobus. In the afternoon, walk the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for birds, primates, and bush babies. Overnight: Kibale

Day 12: Semuliki National Park

Visit the Sempaya Hot Springs, Semuliki’s best-known feature, where geysers reach boiling temperatures — locals traditionally boil eggs and matooke in the springs. Overnight: Fort Portal area

Day 13: Fort Portal & the Toro Kingdom

Visit the Toro Kingdom Palace, home of the world’s youngest reigning king, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru, and learn about Toro history, dress, and royal lineage. Continue to the Tooro Botanical Gardens and other cultural sites around town. Overnight: Fort Portal

Overnight: Queen Elizabeth NP

Day 17: Ishasha Sector — Tree-Climbing Lions

Morning game drive through the Kasenyi plains, followed by a transfer to Ishasha, famed for its tree-climbing lions. With the help of local rangers, search the fig trees for lions resting in the branches — a behavior found in very few places in the world. Overnight: Ishasha

Day 18: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Drive through the terraced Kigezi highlands to Bwindi, home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Overnight: Bwindi

Day 19: Mountain Gorilla Trekking

The signature experience of this safari. After briefing at the park headquarters, trek with experienced rangers through the forest to spend one precious hour with a habituated gorilla family — creatures with whom we share around 98% of our DNA. Treks can take anywhere from one to eight hours depending on the family’s location. A Batwa community walk or shorter forest walk is available as an alternative for non-trekkers. Overnight: Bwindi

Day 20: Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Travel to Kisoro and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda’s smallest national park and the only place in the country where golden monkeys are found — sitting on the Ugandan side of the Virunga volcanoes, this is truly “where silver meets gold.” Overnight: Mgahinga/Kisoro

Day 21: Golden Monkey Tracking

An early start from the Ntebeko trailhead for the standard half-day golden monkey trek. Once located, you’ll spend an hour observing this playful, endangered primate before returning to your lodge. Golden monkey habituation experiences are also available here. Overnight: Mgahinga/Kisoro

Day 22: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

Drive to Lake Bunyonyi, Africa’s second-deepest lake, set among terraced hills once described by Winston Churchill as reminiscent of “the Switzerland of Africa.” Overnight: Lake Bunyonyi

Day 23: Explore the Islands of Lake Bunyonyi

Take a canoe ride across the lake’s 29 islands, including the infamous Punishment Island, with stories from your guide along the way. The afternoon is free for hiking, birdwatching, reading by the shore, or a swim in this bilharzia-free lake. Overnight: Lake Bunyonyi

Day 24: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

A scenic 4.5-hour drive through farmland and rolling countryside to Lake Mburo National Park, one of Uganda’s smallest parks but home to large numbers of zebra, impala, oribi, buffalo, warthog, waterbuck, and over 330 bird species. Arrive in time for an afternoon boat cruise on the lake. Overnight: Lake Mburo

Day 25: Departure via Kampala/Entebbe

An optional final game drive before the drive back toward Kampala, with a stop at the Equator line for photos and souvenirs. Depending on your flight time, transfer directly to Entebbe International Airport for your onward journey, or extend your stay with a Kampala city tour.

Good to Know

Gorilla permits: A Uganda gorilla trekking permit currently costs USD 800 per person and is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which manages all of Uganda’s national parks, including Bwindi, Mgahinga, Kidepo Valley, Murchison Falls, and Queen Elizabeth. Permits are limited daily and should be booked well in advance — we handle this for you as part of your booking.

Best time to go: Uganda is a year-round destination, but the driest months (December–February and June–August) are best for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, since forest trails are less muddy. Birding and scenery are at their best just after the rains.

Fitness level: This itinerary involves a mix of easy game drives and moderate-to-strenuous hiking (gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, and the Sipi Falls and Fort Portal walks), through forest terrain at altitude. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended.

Uganda entry requirements: Most visitors need a visa, obtainable in advance via the Uganda e-Visa portal, and proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry.
