3 Days Bwindi Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali
For travelers flying into Kigali, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is remarkably close — a scenic 4 to 5 hour drive via the Cyanika border, compared to well over 8 hours from Uganda’s own international airport at Entebbe. This three-day trip takes full advantage of that proximity, giving you a relaxed, well-paced gorilla trekking safari with room to properly enjoy Kigali on either end, rather than the rushed turnaround of a strict two-day version.
The trip opens with a tour of Kigali itself — the Genocide Memorial, local markets, and craft centers — before the drive south through the Kigezi Highlands to Bwindi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The following morning brings the trip’s centerpiece: a trek into the forest to spend a full hour with a wild gorilla family, with the afternoon left free for an optional visit to a local Batwa community, the forest’s original inhabitants. A final day brings you back across the border to Kigali in time for your onward flight.
It’s an efficient but unhurried way to fit one of Africa’s great wildlife experiences into a short window, and considerably more relaxed than attempting the same trip in two days. If you’re genuinely pressed for time, our 2 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali strips this down to the essentials; if you’d like a second gorilla trek in Rwanda as well, our 5-Day Uganda Rwanda Double Gorilla Safari is a natural next step. Or get in touch and we’ll tailor the pace, dates, or accommodation level to suit you.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali City Tour & Transfer to Bwindi
Your Kenlink Tours guide will collect you in Kigali for a short city tour, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local markets, and craft centers — a meaningful introduction to Rwanda’s history before crossing into Uganda. After lunch, begin the drive south through the terraced Kigezi Highlands, crossing the Cyanika border into southwestern Uganda, with a stop at the scenic Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo along the way. Arrive at your lodge near Bwindi in the evening. Overnight: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking & Batwa Community Visit
The heart of this safari. After an early breakfast, head to park headquarters for a briefing before setting off into the forest with experienced rangers in search of a habituated gorilla family. Trekking time varies depending on where the gorillas are that day, but once located, you’ll spend a full hour observing them — an experience most travelers describe as one of the most moving of their lives. In the afternoon, consider an optional visit to a nearby Batwa community, the original forest-dwelling people of this region, to learn about their traditional way of life before it was reshaped by the creation of the park. Overnight: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Day 3: Transfer Back to Kigali
After breakfast, begin the return journey across the border to Kigali, with time to take in the scenery of the Kigezi Highlands and rice terraces along the way. Arrive in Kigali in the afternoon, in time for your onward travel or flight home.

Good to Know
Permits: Uganda’s gorilla trekking permit currently costs USD 800 per person and is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority — considerably less than Rwanda’s USD 1,500 permit, which is part of why this route is popular with Kigali-based travelers. Permits are limited daily and should be secured well ahead of your travel dates — we handle this as part of your booking.
Visa note: If you plan to re-enter Rwanda after your trek, make sure your Rwanda visa is multiple-entry. We generally recommend the East African Tourist Visa, valid for Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya, available through the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration or the Uganda e-Visa portal.
Best time to go: This trip can be done year-round, but the driest months (December–February and June–August) offer firmer forest trails and generally easier trekking conditions.
Fitness level: Gorilla trekking involves uneven, sometimes steep and muddy forest terrain, and can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the gorillas’ location that day. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, and hiring a porter is strongly encouraged — many are former poachers now earning a living supporting conservation tourism.
Entry requirements: Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into both Rwanda and Uganda.
