If mountain gorillas are Uganda’s most famous primate, chimpanzees run a very close second — and Kibale Forest National Park, widely regarded as the “primate capital of the world,” is where you’ll find the highest concentration and best sighting odds anywhere in East Africa. This three-day trip is built around a single, focused goal: spending real time with wild chimpanzees, our closest living relatives, in one of the last great tracts of rainforest in western Uganda.

Kibale is home to 13 primate species and around 1,450 chimpanzees, alongside red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and black-and-white colobus, all sharing a forest that’s also rich in birdlife. The trip’s centerpiece is a morning of chimpanzee tracking with experienced guides, working alongside rangers who know each community’s movements intimately, followed by a walk through the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary — a lower-key but rewarding complement to the main trek, known for its birdlife and more relaxed pace.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

After breakfast, your Kenlink Tours guide will collect you from Kampala or Entebbe for the drive west to Kibale Forest National Park, passing through scenic countryside and tea plantations along the way. In the afternoon, take a guided nature walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run reserve known for its birdlife, primates, and bush babies — a gentle introduction to the region ahead of tomorrow’s main event. Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest

After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing before setting off into the forest with experienced guides in search of a chimpanzee community. Trekking time varies depending on where the chimps are that day, but once located, you’ll spend a full hour observing them as they feed, groom, and call to one another through the canopy — an experience most travelers describe as both thrilling and deeply moving. Travelers wanting a more immersive encounter can opt for the full-day chimpanzee habituation experience instead, following researchers as they work to habituate a wild community to human presence, from dawn nest-departure to dusk nest-building. Day 3: Transfer Back to Kampala/Entebbe

After breakfast, begin the drive back toward Kampala or Entebbe, arriving in the evening in time for your onward travel or flight home.

Good to Know

Permits: A standard chimpanzee trekking permit in Kibale currently costs USD 250 per person for international visitors, while the chimpanzee habituation experience costs USD 300 per person. Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and are limited daily, so we recommend booking well ahead of your travel dates — we handle this as part of your reservation.

Best time to go: Kibale can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer firmer forest trails and slightly easier trekking conditions, though chimpanzee sightings are good throughout the year.

Fitness level: Chimpanzee trekking is generally less physically demanding than gorilla trekking, on comparatively flat forest terrain, though a reasonable level of fitness is still recommended. The minimum age for chimpanzee trekking is 12.

Uganda entry requirements: Most visitors need a visa, obtainable in advance through the Uganda e-Visa portal, and proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry.
