3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari

Rwanda has built a reputation as the most polished, accessible gateway to mountain gorilla trekking anywhere in the world — and this three-day safari is designed to make the most of that in a short, focused trip. Starting and ending in Kigali, it takes you into Volcanoes National Park, home to around a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, for the trip’s signature encounter, and adds a second primate experience — golden monkey trekking — along with a meaningful stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial to understand the country’s remarkable story of recovery.

The trip opens with a city tour of Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest and most orderly capitals, including a visit to the Genocide Memorial — a sobering but essential introduction to modern Rwandan history — before the scenic drive north to the Virunga volcanoes. The following morning brings the trip’s highlight: a trek into the forest to spend a full hour with a wild mountain gorilla family, one of the most profound wildlife encounters anywhere on Earth. A final morning of golden monkey trekking, tracking this playful, endangered primate through the park’s bamboo forest, rounds out the safari before the transfer back to Kigali.

It’s an efficient, well-paced introduction to Rwanda for travelers with limited time, and a natural complement to a broader East Africa itinerary. If you’d like to add Akagera’s savannah wildlife to this trip, our 5-Day Volcanoes Gorillas & Akagera Park Wildlife Safari builds on the same foundation; if you’d like to cross into Uganda for a second gorilla trek and chimpanzee tracking, our 4-Day Rwanda-Uganda Golden Monkey and Gorilla Trekking is a natural next step. Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you’ll be met by your Kenlink Tours guide, who will take you on a city tour of Kigali, including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local markets, and craft centers — a meaningful introduction to Rwanda’s history and remarkable recovery. Afterward, begin the scenic 2–3 hour drive north through terraced hills and farming villages to your lodge near the Virunga volcanoes, arriving in time to rest ahead of tomorrow’s trek. Overnight: Volcanoes National Park

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking Experience

The heart of this safari. After an early breakfast, drive to park headquarters for a briefing and to learn which gorilla family you’ve been assigned. Rangers will then lead you into the forest, with trekking time varying depending on where the gorillas are that day. Once located, you’ll spend a full hour observing them — an experience most travelers describe as one of the most moving of their lives. Return to your lodge to relax, with an optional evening visit to a local cultural village if you have the energy. Overnight: Volcanoes National Park

Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking & Transfer to Kigali

After breakfast, return to the park headquarters for a golden monkey trekking briefing. A ranger guide will lead you into the bamboo forest to find this playful, endangered primate, considerably more relaxed and less strenuous trekking than the previous day’s gorilla trek. After spending an hour with the golden monkeys, begin the transfer back to Kigali, with an optional stop at the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village en route to learn about traditional Rwandan life. Arrive in Kigali in the evening in time for your onward travel or flight home.

Good to Know

Permits: Rwanda’s gorilla trekking permit currently costs USD 1,500 per person, and the golden monkey trekking permit costs around USD 100 per person, both issued by the Rwanda Development Board. Gorilla families are allocated each morning based on group interests and fitness levels, so let your guide know your preferences ahead of time. Permits are limited daily and should be booked well ahead of your travel dates — we handle this as part of your reservation.

Best time to go: This trip can be done year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the best trekking conditions, with firmer forest trails.

Fitness level: Gorilla trekking involves uneven, sometimes steep volcanic terrain, though Rwanda’s trails are generally considered more forgiving than Uganda’s. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Golden monkey trekking is comparatively easy.

Rwanda entry requirements: Most visitors need a visa, obtainable in advance through the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration, and proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry.
