It’s a tailor-made safari holiday that takes in Uganda’s classic wildlife parks, its two headline primate experiences, one of its most remote and rewarding wilderness areas, and enough downtime by the lake to actually enjoy your holiday rather than just survive it.

The route begins at Entebbe International Airport and heads north to Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest protected area, for game drives along the Nile and a boat cruise to the base of the thundering falls themselves. From there, a short flight opens up Kidepo Valley National Park — one of Africa’s last true wildernesses, tucked into Uganda’s remote northeastern corner, where you’ll go looking for lion and cheetah on the savannah and spend time with the Karamojong, cattle-herding people whose traditions remain some of the least disturbed in East Africa.

The safari then turns south and west to Kibale Forest National Park for chimpanzee trekking, Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and a Kazinga Channel boat cruise, and the Ishasha sector in search of tree-climbing lions, before arriving at the undisputed highlight of any Uganda trip: a morning spent in the presence of a wild mountain gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The final days ease off the pace, with canoeing on the terraced shores of Lake Bunyonyi and wildlife watching on land and water at Lake Mburo National Park, before the drive back to Kampala and Entebbe for your departure.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe International Airport

Your Kenlink Tours guide will meet you on arrival, assist with all arrival formalities, and transfer you to your hotel to relax and settle in. Depending on your arrival time, there’s often the option of a short Entebbe sightseeing tour or a visit to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, arranged at an extra cost. Overnight: Entebbe

Day 2: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park

Drive north through Uganda’s central farmland toward Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest and oldest protected area, with a stop en route at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a short walk if time allows. Arrive at your lodge overlooking the Nile in the evening. Overnight: Murchison Falls

Day 3: Game Drive & Boat Cruise, Murchison Falls National Park

An early game drive along the northern bank of the Nile offers excellent chances of elephant, lion, Rothschild’s giraffe, buffalo, hartebeest, waterbuck, and — with luck — leopard. After lunch, take a boat cruise upstream to the base of the falls, where the entire Nile forces itself through a narrow gorge in a thunderous, rainbow-lit spray, with hippo, crocodile, and abundant birdlife along the way. Overnight: Murchison Falls

Day 4: Fly to Kidepo Valley National Park

Take a scenic morning flight to Kidepo Valley National Park, tucked into Uganda’s remote northeastern corner against the borders of South Sudan and Kenya. Widely considered one of Africa’s finest and least-visited wilderness areas, Kidepo trades crowds for dramatic scenery — savannah grassland framed by rugged mountains — and a real sense of being somewhere few travelers ever reach. Settle into your lodge in time for an afternoon game drive. Overnight: Kidepo Valley

Day 5: Game Drive & Karamojong Cultural Visit

Spend the morning on a game drive through Kidepo’s Narus Valley, looking for lion, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, zebra, and Jackson’s hartebeest against a backdrop unlike anywhere else in Uganda. In the afternoon, visit a Karamojong manyatta to learn about the daily life, cattle culture, and traditions of this proud pastoralist community, whose way of life has changed remarkably little over generations. Overnight: Kidepo Valley

Day 6: Fly to Entebbe & Transfer Toward Kibale

Fly back from Kidepo, then continue by road toward Kibale Forest National Park, passing through the rolling, tea-covered hills of western Uganda en route. Overnight: Kibale

Day 7: Chimpanzee Trekking & Bigodi Wetland Walk

After a briefing at the park headquarters, set off into the forest with experienced guides in search of Kibale’s chimpanzees — Uganda’s largest population of this endangered ape, and our closest living relative. Chimp sightings aren’t guaranteed, but most visitors get to see, and nearly everyone gets to hear, these close cousins of ours as they call and move through the canopy. In the afternoon, take a guided walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, known for its birdlife, primates, and bush babies. Overnight: Kibale

Day 8: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Drive south to Queen Elizabeth National Park, whose mix of savannah, forest, wetland, and volcanic crater lakes makes it one of Uganda’s most biologically diverse parks. Arrive in time for an evening game drive. Overnight: Queen Elizabeth NP

Day 9: Game Drive & Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

A morning game drive through the Kasenyi plains, with the Rwenzori Mountains — the fabled “Mountains of the Moon” — rising on the horizon, offers good chances of lion, elephant, buffalo, Uganda kob, and leopard. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, home to one of Africa’s densest hippo populations, along with crocodile and prolific birdlife. Overnight: Queen Elizabeth NP

Day 10: Ishasha Tree-Climbing Lions & Transfer to Bwindi

Head to the Ishasha sector for a final game drive in search of the region’s famous tree-climbing lions — a behavior seen in only a handful of places in the world — before continuing to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The drive winds through the terraced Kigezi Highlands, arriving at Bwindi in the evening. Overnight: Bwindi

Day 11: Mountain Gorilla Trekking Experience

The heart of this safari. After a briefing at park headquarters, trek into the forest with experienced rangers in search of a habituated gorilla family. Once located, you’ll spend a full hour in their presence — creatures with whom we share around 98% of our DNA, and an encounter that stays with most travelers long after they’ve left Uganda. Overnight: Bwindi

Day 12: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

Drive to Lake Bunyonyi through some of southwestern Uganda’s most spectacular scenery — steeply terraced hillsides earning the area its nickname, the “Switzerland of Africa.” Arrive in time to relax by the shore of Africa’s second-deepest lake. Overnight: Lake Bunyonyi

Day 13: Canoeing the Islands of Lake Bunyonyi

Take a canoe out across the lake’s 29 islands, including the notorious Punishment Island, hearing local stories from your guide as you go. The rest of the day is free for hiking, birdwatching, or simply relaxing by the water — swimming is safe here, since the lake is bilharzia-free. Overnight: Lake Bunyonyi

Day 14: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

Drive north to Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s smallest savannah park but one that packs in a lot: swamp-fringed lakes, rich birdlife, and healthy populations of zebra, impala, eland, and buffalo, plus hippo and crocodile in the lake itself — along with giraffe, relocated here from Murchison Falls by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Arrive in time for lunch and an afternoon boat cruise on the lake. Overnight: Lake Mburo

Day 15: Walking Safari & Game Drive

Lake Mburo is one of the few parks in Uganda where walking safaris are permitted, offering a completely different way to experience the bush, on foot and under the guidance of an armed ranger. Round out the day with an evening game drive as the light turns golden over the acacia woodland. Overnight: Lake Mburo

Day 16: Free Day at Lake Mburo

A relaxed day to enjoy Lake Mburo at your own pace — options include horseback riding through the park (a unique way to get close to zebra and antelope without spooking them), mountain biking, or simply unwinding at your lodge after two weeks on safari. Overnight: Lake Mburo

Day 17: Transfer to Kampala

Drive north toward Kampala, stopping at the Equator line in Kayabwe for photographs and a chance to stand with one foot in each hemisphere, plus time for last-minute souvenir shopping. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a short Kampala city tour before settling in for the evening. Overnight: Kampala/Entebbe

Day 18: Departure

Good to Know

Gorilla permits: A Uganda gorilla trekking permit currently costs USD 800 per person and is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which manages all of Uganda’s national parks, including Bwindi, Kidepo Valley, Murchison Falls, and Queen Elizabeth. Permits are limited daily and should be secured well ahead of your travel dates — we handle this as part of your booking.

Getting to Kidepo: Because Kidepo Valley sits so far from the rest of Uganda’s parks, this itinerary uses a scheduled domestic flight to reach it rather than a long overland drive each way — the single biggest time-saver that makes fitting Kidepo into an 18-day trip possible. If you’d prefer to drive instead (seeing Karamoja and the Sipi Falls area along the way), we can adjust the route and duration accordingly.

Best time to go: Uganda can be visited year-round, but the driest months (December–February and June–August) are best for gorilla trekking and general game viewing, when trails are firmer and wildlife gathers around remaining water sources.

Fitness level: This itinerary combines easy game drives and boat cruises with moderate-to-strenuous activity, particularly gorilla trekking through dense, sometimes steep rainforest. A reasonable level of fitness will help you get the most out of the trip.

Uganda entry requirements: Most visitors need a visa, obtainable in advance through the Uganda e-Visa portal, and proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry.
