Short Uganda Gorilla Safari with game drive. Not everyone has three weeks to spend in Uganda — and you don’t need that long to have a genuinely complete safari. This short break combines the two experiences most travelers ask for first: a game drive through classic African savannah, and a face-to-face encounter with a wild mountain gorilla family. In just four days, you’ll go from open grassland dotted with elephant and buffalo to the misty, tangled rainforest of Bwindi, one of the last strongholds of the mountain gorilla anywhere on Earth.
The trip is built around Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, two of southwestern Uganda’s flagship destinations, connected by one of the country’s most scenic drives through the terraced Kigezi Highlands. You’ll get a proper game drive across the Kasenyi plains — home to lion, elephant, buffalo, and the ever-present Uganda kob — before continuing on to Bwindi for the trip’s centerpiece: a morning spent tracking and observing a habituated gorilla family in their natural habitat. It’s a trip that proves you don’t need weeks in Uganda to see its two biggest draws done properly.
This itinerary works well as a standalone short break, a long weekend extension onto a business trip in the region, or a taster before a longer safari another time. If you’d like to add a Kazinga Channel boat cruise or the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, take a look at our 3 Days Tree-Climbing Lions Tour & Boat Cruise; for a gorillas-only trip with no game drive, our 3-Day Uganda Gorillas Safari is a leaner alternative. Or get in touch and we’ll tailor the pace, dates, or accommodation level to suit you.
After breakfast, your Kenlink Tours guide will collect you from Kampala or Entebbe for the scenic drive west toward Queen Elizabeth National Park. Along the way, stop at the Equator line for the classic one-foot-in-each-hemisphere photo, with lunch in Mbarara town before continuing on. Arrive at the park in the late afternoon in time for an evening game drive before checking into your lodge for dinner. Overnight: Queen Elizabeth National Park
Rise early for a game drive across the Kasenyi plains, one of the park’s richest wildlife areas, with excellent chances of elephant, lion, buffalo, Uganda kob, and warthog against the backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains. After breakfast back at the lodge, continue south to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The drive winds through the dramatically terraced Kigezi Highlands, sometimes called the “Switzerland of Africa,” arriving at Bwindi in the evening in good time to rest ahead of tomorrow’s trek. Overnight: Bwindi
The heart of this safari. After a briefing at the park headquarters, set off into the forest with experienced rangers in search of a habituated gorilla family. Trekking time varies from one to several hours depending on where the gorillas are that day, but once located, you’ll spend a full hour in their presence — creatures with whom humans share around 98% of our DNA. It’s widely described as one of the most moving wildlife encounters anywhere in the world. The rest of the afternoon is free to rest, reflect, or take an optional nature or community walk. Overnight: Bwindi
After breakfast, begin the drive back toward Kampala or Entebbe, retracing the route through the Kigezi Highlands and past the Equator, with a lunch stop along the way. Arrive in the evening in time for your onward travel or flight home.
Gorilla permits: A Uganda gorilla trekking permit currently costs USD 800 per person and is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, the official body managing Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, and all of Uganda’s national parks. Permits are limited daily and should be secured well ahead of your travel dates — we handle this as part of your booking.
Best time to go: This trip can be done year-round, but the driest months (December–February and June–August) are best for gorilla trekking, since forest trails are firmer and easier underfoot, and for game viewing generally, as wildlife concentrates around remaining water sources.
Fitness level: The game drive is easy and suitable for all fitness levels. Gorilla trekking is more demanding — it takes place on uneven, sometimes steep and muddy forest terrain — so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
Uganda entry requirements: Most visitors need a visa, obtainable in advance through the Uganda e-Visa portal, and proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry. General travel and destination information is also available from the Uganda Tourism Board.
