2 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali

If your time is tight but a mountain gorilla encounter is non-negotiable, this is the most efficient way to make it happen. Flying into Kigali rather than Entebbe cuts the road time to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park dramatically — a 4 to 5 hour drive via the border, compared to well over 8 hours from Uganda’s own international airport — making a genuine gorilla trek possible in just two days, with one night on the ground.

The trip crosses from Rwanda into southwestern Uganda to reach Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. After an overnight near the park, you’ll spend the following morning trekking into the forest with experienced rangers to find a habituated gorilla family, then spend a full hour in their presence before beginning the return journey to Kigali the same day. It’s a fast-paced but genuinely rewarding way to fit one of Africa’s great wildlife experiences around a tight schedule — a business trip, a stopover, or simply a short window before onward travel.

Because Uganda’s gorilla permits are considerably less expensive than Rwanda’s, this route is also a popular budget-conscious alternative for travelers flying into Kigali who’d rather not pay Rwanda’s higher permit price. If you’d like to add a Rwanda-side gorilla trek as well for a full comparison, our 5-Day Uganda Rwanda Double Gorilla Safari covers exactly that; if you’d rather trek only in Rwanda, our 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari is a natural alternative. Or get in touch and we’ll tailor the pace, dates, or accommodation level to suit you.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your Kenlink Tours guide will meet you in Kigali early in the morning for the scenic 4 to 5 hour drive to Bwindi, crossing the Cyanika border into southwestern Uganda along the way. The route passes through the terraced hills of the Kigezi Highlands, sometimes called the “Switzerland of Africa.” Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon, with time to rest ahead of tomorrow’s early start. Overnight: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking & Transfer Back to Kigali

After an early breakfast, head to park headquarters for a briefing before setting off into the forest with experienced rangers in search of a habituated gorilla family. Trekking time varies depending on where the gorillas are that day, but once located, you’ll spend a full hour observing them — an experience most travelers describe as one of the most moving of their lives. Afterward, begin the drive back across the border to Kigali, arriving in the evening in time for your onward travel or flight home.

Good to Know

Permits: Uganda’s gorilla trekking permit currently costs USD 800 per person and is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority — considerably less than Rwanda’s USD 1,500 permit, which is part of why this route is popular with Kigali-based travelers. Permits are limited daily and should be secured well ahead of your travel dates — we handle this as part of your booking.

Visa note: If you plan to re-enter Rwanda after your trek, make sure your Rwanda visa is multiple-entry. We generally recommend the East African Tourist Visa, valid for Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya, available through the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration or the Uganda e-Visa portal.

Best time to go: This trip can be done year-round, but the driest months (December–February and June–August) offer firmer forest trails and generally easier trekking conditions.

Fitness level: Gorilla trekking involves uneven, sometimes steep and muddy forest terrain. Even a short two-day trip can be physically demanding, so let your guide know your fitness level in advance so they can help assign you to a more accessible gorilla family. Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots with ankle support are essential, and hiring a porter is strongly recommended.

Entry requirements: Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into both Rwanda and Uganda.
