Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali City Tour & Transfer to Bwindi

Good to Know

Permits: Uganda’s gorilla trekking permit currently costs USD 800 per person and is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority — considerably less than Rwanda’s USD 1,500 permit, which is part of why this route is popular with Kigali-based travelers. Permits are limited daily and should be secured well ahead of your travel dates — we handle this as part of your booking.

Visa note: If you plan to re-enter Rwanda after your trek, make sure your Rwanda visa is multiple-entry. We generally recommend the East African Tourist Visa, valid for Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya, available through the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration or the Uganda e-Visa portal.

Best time to go: This trip can be done year-round, but the driest months (December–February and June–August) offer firmer forest trails and generally easier trekking conditions.

Fitness level: Gorilla trekking involves uneven, sometimes steep and muddy forest terrain, and can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the gorillas’ location that day. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, and hiring a porter is strongly encouraged — many are former poachers now earning a living supporting conservation tourism.
