Short Gorilla Safaris Starting from Rwanda. Rwanda has cemented its place as one of Africa’s most compelling travel destinations, and for good reason. Beyond the rolling thousand hills, vibrant capital city, and world-class conservation story, Rwanda sits at the doorstep of some of the most accessible gorilla trekking country in the world. Whether you have a single spare weekend or a few precious days between business meetings, short gorilla safaris starting from Kigali are entirely possible — and absolutely unforgettable.
At Kenlink Tours, we specialize in tailoring flexible, time-efficient safari experiences for travelers who want maximum adventure with minimum fuss. This guide covers every short gorilla safari option available from Rwanda, explains the logistics clearly, and includes a sample itinerary to help you visualize exactly how your days will unfold.
Kigali is one of East Africa’s most efficiently connected cities — clean, safe, and serviced by direct flights from major hubs across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. What makes it especially powerful as a gorilla safari base is its geography. Volcanoes National Park, home to Rwanda’s own habituated mountain gorilla families, lies just two to three hours from Kigali by road. And just across the border into southwestern Uganda, both Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the southern sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are reachable in three to five hours from the Rwandan capital.
This means that unlike gorilla safaris starting from Kampala or Entebbe — which require eight or more hours of driving each way — a traveler based in Kigali can reach gorilla country, complete their trek, and return within two to three days without feeling rushed. For time-conscious travelers, this is an enormous advantage, and it is precisely why Rwanda-based short gorilla safaris have grown into one of our most requested offerings at Kenlink Tours.
The quickest gorilla trekking experience available from Kigali is a two-day safari entirely within Rwanda, based in Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga highlands of the northwest. The park is managed by the Rwanda Development Board and is home to ten habituated mountain gorilla families, each available to a maximum of eight visitors per day. A Rwanda gorilla trekking permit currently costs USD 1,500 per person — higher than Uganda’s USD 800 — but includes world-class infrastructure, shorter trek times on average, and stunning volcanic scenery.
On day one, you depart Kigali after breakfast for the roughly three-hour scenic drive through terraced hillsides and banana plantations to Musanze, the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park. After checking into your lodge, you can explore the Musanze Caves or visit the nearby Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for a community experience. On day two, you head to park headquarters at Kinigi for a 7 AM briefing before setting off into the Virunga forest with your ranger guide. After your hour with the gorillas, you return to your lodge for lunch before the afternoon drive back to Kigali. Simple, seamless, and breathtaking.

For travelers who want to combine a cross-border adventure with their gorilla trek, a 2-day Mgahinga Gorilla Safari departing from Kigali is an outstanding choice. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits in the far southwest of Uganda, directly accessible from Rwanda via the Cyanika border crossing. The drive from Kigali to Mgahinga takes approximately three to four hours, making it one of the most convenient cross-border gorilla trekking itineraries in East Africa.
Mgahinga is Uganda’s smallest national park but one of its most atmospheric — a landscape of volcanic peaks, ancient bamboo forest, and extraordinary biodiversity managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Only one gorilla family is habituated here, which means the trekking experience is exceptionally intimate with no more than eight visitors permitted per day. Uganda’s permit fee of USD 800 per person offers considerable savings for budget-conscious travelers compared to Rwanda’s permit price, making Mgahinga a popular choice for those crossing from Kigali. See our gorilla trekking Uganda page for full permit and booking details.
Travelers with three days available unlock one of the most coveted short safari experiences in Africa — a cross-border gorilla trek to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park via Kigali. The southern sectors of Bwindi — Rushaga and Nkuringo — are reachable from the Rwandan border town of Katuna in approximately four to five hours, making them realistic even on a tight schedule. Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, with 24 habituated families spread across four sectors offering far greater permit availability than either Rwanda’s Volcanoes Park or Mgahinga.
A three-day structure allows for a comfortable drive on day one, the gorilla trek on day two, and a relaxed return to Kigali on day three — with time built in to breathe, absorb, and enjoy the extraordinary highland scenery along the way. Our 3-Day Uganda Gorillas Safari is a great starting point, and our team can fully customize it to depart from and return to Kigali.
Day 1 — Kigali Departure | Border Crossing | Drive to Bwindi South
Your Kenlink Tours driver and guide meets you at your Kigali hotel early in the morning. After collecting packed snacks and refreshments for the road, you head southwest through Rwanda’s scenic hill country toward the Katuna border crossing into Uganda. The border formalities are smooth and straightforward, and your guide handles all the required documentation on your behalf. You enter Uganda and wind up through the southwestern highlands, passing through Kisoro town and into the forested buffer zones surrounding Bwindi. You arrive at your lodge in the Rushaga or Nkuringo sector by mid-afternoon. The rest of the day is at leisure — enjoy the mountain views, visit the nearby community, or simply relax with a cup of Ugandan tea on your lodge veranda. Dinner and overnight at a lodge near Bwindi South.
Day 2 — Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi | Community Walk
This is the morning you have been waiting for. After breakfast, your guide drives you to the park headquarters for the pre-trek briefing at 7:30 AM. Rangers assign each group of eight to a specific gorilla family based on your sector, and the trackers who have been monitoring the family overnight radio in their morning location. The trek into Bwindi’s ancient forest begins — through dense vegetation, across stream crossings, and up steep volcanic ridges draped in mist. When you reach the gorillas, you will be completely absorbed in one of the most powerful wildlife encounters on earth. Silverbacks, mothers, and playful juveniles go about their morning routines entirely unperturbed by your presence — a testament to the long habituation process overseen by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
After the trek, return to your lodge for a hot lunch and a rest. In the afternoon, your guide takes you on an optional Batwa cultural walk through the surrounding community, where you hear stories, see traditional crafts, and share in the living heritage of the original forest people of the Virungas. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Day 3 — Nature Walk | Return Drive to Kigali
Rise at a relaxed hour for a morning nature walk around the park boundary — a wonderful way to spot rare birds, golden monkeys in the bamboo, and breathtaking views of the Virunga volcanoes across the border. After breakfast, you begin the drive back to Rwanda, crossing the border at Katuna and winding through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside before arriving in Kigali by early evening. Your guide drops you at your hotel or at Kigali International Airport for your onward flight.
One of the joys of starting your gorilla safari from Rwanda is how easily you can combine it with other extraordinary experiences. Our 4-Day Rwanda-Uganda Golden Monkey and Gorilla Trekking Safari pairs a gorilla trek in Uganda’s Mgahinga with a golden monkey trekking experience in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park — two rare primate encounters in four days across two countries. For those with a week available, our 6-Day Rwanda Adventures with Great Apes and Lake Kivu and 5-Day Volcanoes, Gorillas and Akagera Wildlife Safari both depart from Kigali and offer a richer, more layered East Africa experience.
Gorilla permits for both Rwanda and Uganda must be booked well in advance — at least three to six months ahead during peak season and a minimum of two months even in quieter periods. Walk-in permits are never available at either park. Your passport details are required at the time of booking and must match the permit exactly on the day of the trek. If you are planning to trek in both Rwanda and Uganda during a single trip, an East African Tourist Visa — available on arrival or online — covers Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya on one permit and simplifies cross-border travel significantly.
Pack sturdy waterproof hiking boots, neutral-coloured long-sleeved clothing, light rain gear, gardening gloves, and plenty of water. Altitude can be a factor in both Volcanoes National Park and Bwindi, so take the trek at a comfortable pace and let your porter — always worth hiring — carry your bag.
Whether you have two days or four, departing from Rwanda puts you closer to mountain gorillas than almost any other starting point in East Africa. Our Kenlink Tours team is on hand seven days a week to check gorilla permit availability, recommend the best sector for your travel dates, and put together a fully customized itinerary that works for your schedule and budget. Explore our complete Rwanda Safaris collection and available gorilla tour packages to find the perfect fit — and let us take care of everything else.
