Can i combine Lake Kivu with Uganda Gorilla Safari. You have dreamed of standing a few metres from a mountain gorilla family in the misty forests of Uganda. Now you are wondering whether you can end that adventure with a few lazy days on the shores of Lake Kivu, sipping Rwandan coffee as the sun sets over the water. The short answer is yes, you absolutely can combine Lake Kivu with a Uganda gorilla safari, and it is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the heart of East Africa.
Uganda’s southern gorilla parks sit right on the border with Rwanda. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s southern sectors and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are both in Kisoro District, only a short drive from the Cyanika border. From there, a scenic road leads through Musanze and the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes to Rubavu (Gisenyi) on the northern shore of Lake Kivu. In a single day, you can go from gorilla country to a lakeside hotel with a sandy beach.
In this guide, our team at Kenlink Tours explains exactly how to plan this combination: the best routes and border crossings, realistic drive times, sample itineraries, what to do at Lake Kivu, gorilla permit and visa tips, the best time to travel, and what it all costs. We have guided travellers across the Uganda–Rwanda border for many years, and this is one of the trips our guests love most.
Gorilla trekking is thrilling, but it is also physically demanding. Treks through Bwindi’s steep, muddy slopes can take anywhere from one hour to most of the day. After that kind of adventure, many travellers want time to rest, reflect and enjoy a completely different landscape. Lake Kivu offers exactly that.
Here is why this combination works so well:
If you are short on time and simply want to see gorillas, our 2 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali is a great starting point that can easily be extended to Lake Kivu.
Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes, stretching along Rwanda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Surrounded by terraced green hills, volcanic islands and small fishing villages, it feels more like an inland sea than a lake. Its three main towns each have their own character:
For most gorilla safari combinations, Rubavu is the natural choice because it sits only a few hours’ drive from Kisoro and Mgahinga.
Understanding the geography makes planning much easier. Uganda has two gorilla trekking parks, and both are in the far south-west of the country, close to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, just south of Kisoro town. It is part of the same volcanic range as Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, which makes it the closest Ugandan gorilla park to Lake Kivu. Learn more on this Mgahinga Gorilla National Park guide.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is divided into four trekking sectors: Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, and Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south. The southern sectors are reached through Kisoro and are the most convenient for a Lake Kivu extension. Read more about the park in this Bwindi Impenetrable National Park overview.
The most popular and direct route from Uganda’s gorilla parks to Lake Kivu runs through the Cyanika (Kyanika) border. The border town is only about 10 km south-east of Kisoro, and from there a good tarmac road continues through Musanze (Ruhengeri), past the Virunga volcanoes, to Rubavu on Lake Kivu.
The route looks like this:
In total, plan for roughly three to four hours from Kisoro to the shores of Lake Kivu, and longer if you start from Bwindi’s southern sectors or stop to enjoy the views. It is a comfortable half-day drive, which means you can trek gorillas one day and be relaxing by the lake the next afternoon.
If you trek gorillas in Bwindi’s northern Buhoma or eastern Ruhija sectors, you may travel through Kabale and cross at the Katuna (Gatuna) border. From there, the road leads to Kigali, and you can continue west to Lake Kivu. This route is longer if your final goal is the lake, but it works well if you also want to spend time in Kigali or end your trip at Kigali International Airport.
Another option is to start in Kigali, drive directly to Lake Kivu first, then continue north to Musanze and cross into Uganda at Cyanika for your gorilla trek. Many of our clients choose this order to relax first and trek later.
Many travellers now fly into Kigali rather than Entebbe because Kigali is much closer to Uganda’s southern gorilla parks. From Kigali, the drive to Bwindi’s southern sectors or Mgahinga takes around four to five hours, while the drive from Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi can take most of a day.
This makes a Kigali – Uganda gorillas – Lake Kivu – Kigali loop extremely efficient. You land in Kigali, head north into Uganda for your gorilla trek, then return through Rwanda via Lake Kivu before flying home. Pick and Transfer Safaris explains this approach well in its collection of Uganda gorilla safaris starting from Kigali, and you can explore Kigali City as a gateway destination.
Our own short Kigali-based packages include the 3 Days Bwindi Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali and the 5-Day Gorilla Trekking Safari from Kigali to Uganda, both of which can be extended with nights at Lake Kivu.
Most travellers choose a private guided safari, where a professional driver-guide handles the roads, border crossings, lodge transfers and park briefings. This is the most relaxing option, especially for first-time visitors. Experienced travellers who prefer independence can also hire a 4×4 vehicle with cross-border permission. Kenlink Tours offers well-maintained vehicles through our car hire service, and we can advise on the paperwork needed to drive between Uganda and Rwanda. Remember that Uganda drives on the left, while Rwanda drives on the right.
Every traveller is different, so we tailor every trip. These sample itineraries show how easily the two experiences fit together.
This version adds golden monkey tracking, a lively and photogenic primate found in the Virunga volcanoes. You trek golden monkeys in Mgahinga or Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, gorillas in Uganda, then end with two relaxing days at the lake. Our 4-Day Rwanda-Uganda Golden Monkey and Gorilla Trekking tour is the perfect base for this extended version.
For true gorilla lovers, why not trek in both countries? Spend a day with gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi or Mgahinga, cross into Rwanda for a second trek in Volcanoes National Park, then unwind for two or three nights at Lake Kivu. Our 5 Days Uganda Rwanda Double Gorilla Safari can be extended by two nights on the lake to create this itinerary.
With more time, you can build a grand loop that includes gorillas, chimpanzees, savannah wildlife and Lake Kivu. A popular route combines chimpanzee tracking in Uganda’s Kibale Forest, game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, gorilla trekking in Bwindi, then Lake Kivu and Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda. Explore our 10 Days Uganda Rwanda Combining Safari and the 15-Day Rwanda–Uganda Primate & Big-Five Safari Adventure. For more inspiration, see Pick and Transfer Safaris’ 7 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari Adventure and 10 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari.
If Lake Kivu is your main priority, our 6-Day Rwanda Adventures – Great Apes and Lake Kivu itinerary already includes time on the lake and can be adapted to include a Uganda gorilla trek.
Lake Kivu is not just a place to rest. It offers plenty of gentle activities that are perfect after the excitement of gorilla trekking.
Many travellers use Lake Kivu as a stepping stone to Rwanda’s other highlights. From Rusizi in the south, you can easily reach Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee tracking and a canopy walk. Our 3-Day Nyungwe Forest National Park Tour fits neatly after Lake Kivu, and Pick and Transfer Safaris shares useful background on Nyungwe Forest National Park. If you want savannah wildlife and the Big Five, add our 3-Day Akagera Game Drive Safari in eastern Rwanda.
Your gorilla permit is the most important booking on the whole trip, so secure it first and build the rest of the itinerary around it.
For a classic Uganda-only trek, our 3-Day Uganda Gorillas Safari is a popular choice. If you would rather trek in Rwanda before relaxing at the lake, see our 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari.
Because this trip crosses an international border, plan your visas carefully.
Gorilla trekking and Lake Kivu are both possible all year, but the seasons affect your experience.
Whatever the season, pack good waterproof hiking boots, a rain jacket, gardening gloves for gripping vegetation and long sleeves for the trek, then light clothes and swimwear for the lake.
Near the gorillas: Kisoro, Rushaga, Nkuringo and the areas around Mgahinga offer lodges for every budget, from simple guesthouses to luxury eco-lodges with volcano views. Lake Mutanda, between Kisoro and southern Bwindi, is a beautiful place to spend a night before or after your trek. Staying near Kisoro also shortens the drive to Lake Kivu the next day.
At Lake Kivu: Rubavu has a wide range of lakeside hotels, boutique guesthouses and beach resorts. Karongi offers quieter, scenic lodges with island views. We match accommodation to your budget and style, whether you want simple comfort or a luxury lakeside suite.
The total cost depends on the length of your trip, the season, your choice of accommodation and the number of travellers sharing the vehicle. The main cost components are:
As a reference point, Kenlink Tours’ short Kigali-based gorilla packages are listed from around USD 1,540 per person for two days, with the permit included. Adding Lake Kivu usually means one to three extra nights of accommodation and transport. For an accurate quote, contact our team with your dates, group size and preferred comfort level, and we will build a tailored itinerary.
If your schedule is tight, you can still see gorillas in Uganda and enjoy a night at Lake Kivu. Pick and Transfer Safaris, based in Kisoro near the Cyanika border, specialises in short trips such as the 1 Day Uganda Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali, the more relaxed 2 Days Uganda Gorilla Tour Starting from Kigali and the 3 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari from Rwanda. Any of these can be followed by a night or two in Rubavu on your way back to Kigali. You can read more about the team on their About Us page or send an enquiry through their contact page.
Can I combine Lake Kivu with a Uganda gorilla safari? Yes. Uganda’s southern gorilla parks, Mgahinga and Bwindi’s Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors, are close to the Cyanika border. From there, Lake Kivu at Rubavu is a few hours’ drive, making the combination easy and popular.
How long does it take to drive from Kisoro to Lake Kivu? Plan for roughly three to four hours from Kisoro to Rubavu via the Cyanika border and Musanze, including border formalities.
Which Ugandan gorilla park is closest to Lake Kivu? Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, just south of Kisoro, is the closest. Bwindi’s southern sectors are the next most convenient.
Do I need a separate visa for Rwanda? The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya with multiple entries, so it is the simplest option. Otherwise, you will need valid visas for each country and re-entry permission for Uganda if you cross back.
Should I fly into Kigali or Entebbe? For a gorilla and Lake Kivu trip, Kigali is usually more convenient because it is closer to both Uganda’s southern gorilla parks and Lake Kivu.
How many days do I need? Four days is the minimum for a gorilla trek plus one night at Lake Kivu. Five to seven days lets you add golden monkeys, a second gorilla trek or more time on the lake.
Is Lake Kivu safe for swimming? Many visitors swim at Rubavu’s beaches and at lakeside hotels. Swim at designated areas and follow your hotel’s advice.
Can I trek gorillas in both Uganda and Rwanda on the same trip? Yes. A double gorilla trek, one in Uganda and one in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, combines perfectly with Lake Kivu. See our 3-Day Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park option.
So, can you combine Lake Kivu with a Uganda gorilla safari? Absolutely. The two experiences sit only a few hours apart, connected by a scenic road through the Virunga volcanoes. You can spend one unforgettable hour with mountain gorillas in Uganda’s ancient forests, then unwind on the shores of one of Africa’s most beautiful lakes, all in a single, well-planned trip.
