Tucked into Uganda's far southwestern corner where the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo converge, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of Africa's best-kept secrets. It is Uganda's smallest national park, covering just 33.7 square kilometres of ancient Virunga volcanic landscape — yet it packs in an extraordinary range of wildlife, adventure, and cultural experiences that rival parks many times its size. At its heart is one of the world's most intimate gorilla trekking experiences: a private encounter with the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family, the sole habituated gorilla family in the park, in a setting that feels as remote and primordial as anywhere on earth.
While Bwindi Impenetrable Forest understandably attracts the lion's share of gorilla trekking visitors, Mgahinga offers something Bwindi cannot: a genuinely uncrowded, almost private gorilla encounter set against a backdrop of towering volcanoes, golden monkey-filled bamboo forests, and the living culture of the ancient Batwa forest people. If you want to see mountain gorillas without the crowds, with the volcanoes looming above and the Congo border just a ridge away, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the place to come.
The Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is the only mountain gorilla group in Mgahinga that has been habituated to human presence and is open for trekking. The family currently consists of nine individuals — including multiple silverbacks, adult females, juveniles, and at least one infant — making it one of the most complete and naturally structured gorilla families available for trekking anywhere in Uganda. The presence of more than one silverback within the group is particularly rare and gives observers the extraordinary chance to witness silverback interactions and the complex social dynamics of mountain gorilla family life.
One important note for travellers planning a Mgahinga gorilla trek: the Nyakagezi family is known to be mobile, occasionally crossing into Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park territory within the broader Virunga Conservation Area. On very rare occasions this means trekking permits cannot be used on a given day. However, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) monitors the family daily, and in recent years the Nyakagezi family has remained consistently within Uganda. KenLink Tours always verifies the family's location before confirming your trek date. Learn more in our guide on how many gorillas are in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Permit tip: Mgahinga gorilla permits are often easier to secure on shorter notice than Bwindi, making the park an excellent option for travellers with flexible dates or those looking to add a gorilla trek to an existing itinerary. Contact KenLink Tours to check availability and book your Mgahinga gorilla permit.
Both Mgahinga and Bwindi offer genuine, world-class mountain gorilla encounters — but they are very different experiences. Understanding those differences helps you choose the park that best suits your travel style, fitness level, and what you want to get from the trek.

Gorilla trekking is the centrepiece of any Mgahinga visit, but the park's compact size belies an impressive range of additional activities that make it one of Uganda's most rewarding multi-day destinations. A 2–3 night stay allows you to combine the gorilla trek with most or all of the following experiences.
Trek through bamboo and montane forest to find the Nyakagezi family for a one-hour face-to-face encounter. Trek duration varies from 2–6 hours depending on the gorillas' overnight location. Maximum 8 visitors per day ensures an intimate and unhurried experience. Permits cost USD 800 per person (non-residents) and must be booked in advance through KenLink Tours.
Mgahinga is the only park in Uganda where you can track golden monkeys — a rare, vibrantly coloured primate found exclusively in the Virunga Mountains. The tracking experience begins at 8:00 AM at the Ntebeko trail and involves a half-day hike through bamboo forest to observe these playful, golden-furred primates in their natural habitat. A golden monkey habituation experience is also available. Learn more on our Uganda primate tracking safaris page.
Mgahinga's three Virunga volcanoes offer some of Uganda's most dramatic hiking. Mount Sabyinyo (3,669 m) is particularly special — its summit ridge sits at the tripoint where Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC meet, allowing you to stand in three countries simultaneously. Mount Gahinga (3,474 m) features a beautiful crater swamp at its summit, while Mount Muhabura (4,127 m) is the highest peak in the park with sweeping views across the entire Virunga range.
The Batwa are the indigenous forest people of the Virunga — ancient hunter-gatherers who lived inside Mgahinga's forest for thousands of years before the park's creation. The Batwa Trail is a guided, immersive cultural experience led by Batwa community members who share their traditional skills: fire-making, hunting techniques, forest medicine, honey harvesting, and traditional dance and song. It is one of the most moving and authentic cultural encounters available anywhere in East Africa.
Mgahinga's varied altitude zones — from bamboo forest through Hagenia woodland to afro-alpine moorland — create diverse birding habitats. The park is home to the spectacular Rwenzori Turaco, the handsome Francolin, and numerous Albertine Rift endemics. Early morning guided nature walks along the Ntebeko or Gorge Trails offer the best birding opportunities, with experienced KenLink Tours guides able to identify and locate the park's most sought-after species.
The Gorge Trail is a scenic 3-hour guided forest walk through Mgahinga's lower slopes, following a dramatic ancient gorge carved by volcanic activity. The trail passes through primary forest and bamboo zones rich in birdlife, small primates, and volcanic rock formations. It is an excellent option for visitors on the day before or after their gorilla trek, or for those who prefer a lower-intensity activity alongside the more demanding volcano hikes.
The volcanic peaks towering over Mgahinga are not just a scenic backdrop — they are fully hikeable and form a core part of what makes the park so special. Each volcano offers a different character and challenge level, and all three can be climbed with a KenLink Tours guide and the appropriate park hiking permit.
Known as the "Old Man's Teeth" for its jagged summit ridgeline. The iconic tri-country summit — where Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC meet — makes this the most photographed and most coveted summit in the park. Full-day hike; moderate to challenging.
The lowest of the three peaks, Gahinga features a beautiful crater swamp filled with giant lobelias and heathers at its summit — a surreal, otherworldly landscape. Full-day hike; moderate difficulty with excellent views of all three volcanoes.
The highest peak in Mgahinga and one of the Virungas' most rewarding climbs. A full-day, strenuous ascent rewards summiteers with panoramic views stretching across Uganda, Rwanda, the DRC, and Lake Edward on clear days. Not recommended for beginners.
Below are four itineraries designed by KenLink Tours to make the most of a Mgahinga visit — from a focused 2-day gorilla sprint to a comprehensive 5-day exploration of the park's full activity menu and surrounding region.
Ideal for: Kigali-based travellers, transit stopovers
Ideal for: primate lovers, cultural experience seekers
Ideal for: active travellers wanting the full Mgahinga experience
Ideal for: travellers wanting to compare both gorilla parks
Mgahinga sits just outside Kisoro town in Uganda's Kigezi highlands, close to both the Rwandan and Congolese borders. It is one of the easiest gorilla parks in Uganda to reach from Kigali — the drive from Kigali via the Cyanika border post takes only 2–3 hours, making it significantly faster to reach than most of Bwindi's sectors. For full details on the transfer options, see our guide on transfers from Kigali to Uganda.
From Entebbe or Kampala, the drive to Mgahinga takes approximately 9–10 hours via the Kampala–Mbarara–Kabale highway — a long but scenic journey through Uganda's southwestern highlands. Travellers on tight schedules can take a domestic charter flight from Entebbe or Kajjansi airstrip to Kisoro Airstrip, reducing travel time to around 60–75 minutes. KenLink Tours can arrange the full logistics of your Mgahinga transfer regardless of your entry point. Read our full comparison on landing in Kigali vs Entebbe for a gorilla safari.
Where to stay near Mgahinga: Accommodation options near the park range from the boutique Mount Gahinga Lodge — a luxury eco-lodge just 400 metres from the park gate offering exceptional comfort and Batwa cultural immersion — to comfortable mid-range and budget options in Kisoro town, 15 km away. For dining options near the park, see our guide on where to eat near Mgahinga. KenLink Tours recommends staying inside or very close to the park to minimise your morning transfer time on trekking day.
Mgahinga is a year-round destination, but the dry seasons — June to September and December to February — are the most comfortable for trekking. Trails are drier, views of the volcanoes are clearest, and the overall trekking experience is less physically demanding. These are also the months when Uganda–Rwanda combination safaris are most popular, so booking 3–6 months ahead is advisable.
The green seasons (March–May and October–November) bring spectacular scenery — the bamboo forests are vibrantly lush, the golden monkeys are highly active, and visitor numbers drop considerably. The higher altitude at Mgahinga means it can be cold and wet during these months, so good waterproofing is essential, but the sense of solitude and the misty volcanic atmosphere more than compensate. The cost of a Mgahinga gorilla safari remains the same year-round for the permit itself, though accommodation rates may be slightly lower in the green season.
A 3-day Mgahinga gorilla trekking safari with KenLink Tours — including the gorilla permit, private transfer from Kigali or Kisoro, two nights accommodation, and an expert guide — starts from approximately USD 1,500 per person on a sharing basis. A 4-day package adding golden monkey tracking and the Batwa Trail starts from approximately USD 1,900 per person. A 5-day Mgahinga plus Bwindi combination (two gorilla permits) starts from approximately USD 2,800 per person. All packages are fully customisable.
