Gorilla trekking in Uganda primarily takes place in two magnificent parks:
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Both parks are located in mountainous, forested areas. The trails are natural, meaning they can be muddy, steep, and slippery, especially during or after rain.
In Bwindi, the forest is particularly dense — it’s called “impenetrable” for a reason! Treks can involve climbing hills, navigating uneven ground, crossing streams, and sometimes hiking off-trail through thick vegetation.
The trek’s difficulty varies depending on:
Which gorilla family you are visiting
Where the family is located that day
Weather conditions
Some treks take just 1 to 2 hours, while others may take 5 hours or more to find the gorillas. After finding them, you’ll spend a magical 1 hour observing them.
You do not need to be a professional athlete to trek gorillas — but a reasonable level of fitness is important.
Being physically prepared will make your experience much more enjoyable.
You should be able to:
Walk for several hours at a moderate pace
Manage steep ascents and descents
Tolerate humid, warm conditions
Remain patient and flexible with the day’s unpredictability
People of all ages (from teenagers to seniors) successfully complete gorilla treks every day.
If you are concerned about your fitness, you can request to be assigned to a “nearer” gorilla group when you arrive at the park headquarters — the Uganda Wildlife Authority does its best to accommodate such requests.
Absolutely — and it’s highly recommended!
Porters are available at the start of the trek. They can:
Carry your backpack
Help you navigate tricky terrain
Offer a steadying hand during steeper climbs
Hiring a porter not only makes your trek easier, but it also supports the local communities — many porters are former poachers who now earn a living protecting the gorillas.
The cost is affordable (around $15 to $20 USD) and worth every penny for the help and the positive impact you make.
If you feel unwell or cannot continue during the trek, your guide and rangers will take care of you.
They can arrange assistance or a stretcher team if needed (called the “African Helicopter”) for an additional fee.
However, this situation is very rare. With basic fitness and mental preparation, most visitors complete the trek and describe it as challenging but incredibly rewarding.
Start exercising before your trip — walking, hiking, or light cardio can help.
Wear proper hiking boots with good grip and ankle support.
Use a walking stick (provided by your lodge or the park) to stabilize yourself.
Carry enough water and snacks for energy.
Dress appropriately — long pants, long sleeves, and gloves to protect against scratches.
Go slow and steady — it’s not a race!
✅ Mental attitude is everything. Stay positive, take breaks when needed, and remember: the prize at the end is meeting mountain gorillas face-to-face — an experience that will stay with you forever.
