Nyakagezi Gorilla Family in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is the only habituated gorilla group in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in southwestern Uganda. This extraordinary family is composed of nine members, including an unusual structure of three silverbacks, a feature that sets them apart from most gorilla families. Typically, gorilla groups are led by a dominant silverback, while other mature males either leave to form their own groups or assume a subordinate role. However, in Nyakagezi, three silverbacks co-exist peacefully, demonstrating a rare bond of leadership and cooperation.

The family is named after the Nyakagezi area within the park, which it historically occupied before becoming more settled in recent years. Previously, this group was known for its nomadic behavior, frequently crossing borders between Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, they have now established a more permanent home in Mgahinga, making them accessible to trekkers throughout the year.

Nyakagezi is led by Silverback Mark, who took over leadership from his father, Bugingo. Interestingly, Bugingo, despite being a former dominant silverback, remains with the group instead of leaving, which is quite rare. Other key members include silverbacks Mafia and Rukundo, along with females and juveniles.

This family is known for being highly playful and interactive, offering visitors an incredible chance to observe their social dynamics, strong bonds, and leadership structure. Gorilla trekking with Nyakagezi is a rewarding experience, providing a unique opportunity to witness the rare cohabitation of multiple silverbacks in a single gorilla family.

How Easy is trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park?

Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is considered moderately challenging but manageable for most visitors with reasonable fitness. The park’s terrain is mountainous and covered with dense bamboo and montane forests, requiring some level of endurance to navigate the trails.

The trek typically lasts between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family, the only habituated group in Mgahinga. Compared to other gorilla trekking destinations like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga’s vegetation is less dense, making movement relatively easier. However, the park’s steep slopes and high altitude (ranging from 2,227 to 4,127 meters above sea level) can make trekking physically demanding.

One advantage of trekking in Mgahinga is that the gorillas are easier to find since the Nyakagezi family has a relatively stable home range. Additionally, the smaller number of trekkers per day makes the experience more intimate and enjoyable.

To make the trek easier, visitors are advised to wear sturdy hiking boots, carry a walking stick, hire porters, and take their time moving through the trails. While some level of fitness is required, the effort is highly rewarding, as trekkers get an exclusive, up-close encounter with these magnificent primates in their natural habitat.

How Safe if Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Now?

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is very safe for visitors, with no major security threats currently reported. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and security agencies have put in place strict measures to ensure the safety of tourists, rangers, and wildlife.

The park is patrolled daily by armed rangers who monitor gorilla movements and ensure the safety of trekking routes. Additionally, all treks are accompanied by trained guides and armed escorts, providing an extra layer of security. The Ugandan government maintains a strong military presence in the region, ensuring peace along the borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Unlike in the past, when the park experienced occasional instability due to cross-border movements, Mgahinga is now stable and peaceful, allowing tourists to enjoy gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, and hiking without concerns.

Visitors are encouraged to follow safety guidelines, such as moving in groups, listening to ranger instructions, and adhering to park rules. Since tourism is a major economic contributor, the government prioritizes visitor security to maintain Uganda’s reputation as a premier gorilla trekking destination.

Best time to go for Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The best time for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is during the dry seasons, which occur from June to September and December to February. These months offer ideal trekking conditions, as the trails are less slippery and the weather is generally more pleasant, making hiking through the mountainous terrain easier and more enjoyable.

During the dry season, the gorillas tend to stay in more accessible areas because the food sources are abundant, reducing the time it takes to find them. This allows for shorter treks and a more relaxed experience. The weather is also cooler, especially in the higher altitudes of Mgahinga, making trekking comfortable for most visitors.

However, the rainy season (March to May and October to November) also offers a unique experience for those seeking fewer crowds and a more exclusive adventure. The lush green scenery is at its peak, and the forest is incredibly vibrant. While trekking can be more challenging due to muddy paths, gorilla sightings are still possible, and there are fewer tourists, making it an intimate experience.

In short, dry seasons offer the most comfortable trekking conditions, but the rainy season provides a quieter, more secluded experience with more dramatic landscapes.

Golden Monkey Tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a unique and exhilarating experience. The park is home to the endangered golden monkeys, which live in the bamboo forests of the Virunga Volcanoes region. These playful and curious monkeys are often found in large troops, making them an exciting species to observe.

Tracking golden monkeys is easier than gorilla trekking, with shorter treks usually taking about 1-3 hours, making it accessible for most fitness levels. Visitors are guided by trained rangers who lead the group to the troops’ locations, where you can spend up to one hour observing the monkeys in their natural habitat. The golden monkeys’ vibrant orange fur and social behavior provide fantastic photo opportunities.

Golden monkey tracking is available throughout the year, but it’s especially great during the dry season (June to September and December to February) when the trails are easier to navigate.
