Uganda Tours Combined with Kenya Safari

East Africa is home to two of the world's most extraordinary wildlife experiences — and most travellers make the mistake of choosing between them. A Uganda safari delivers intimate primate encounters in ancient rainforest that exist nowhere else on Earth. A Kenya safari delivers the open savannah spectacle — lions, elephants, and the Great Migration — that defines the classic African experience. Combining both in a single journey is not only possible; for serious wildlife travellers, it is the definitive East Africa itinerary.

This guide explains why Uganda and Kenya complement each other so powerfully, how a combined itinerary works in practice, what to expect at each destination, and how Kenlink Tours structures these two-country journeys to give every client the best of both worlds without wasted days or unnecessary complexity.

Why Combine Uganda and Kenya?

The straightforward answer is ecological contrast. Uganda and Kenya offer completely different types of wildlife encounter — and both are exceptional at what they do. No other two-country combination in East Africa delivers as much variety, as much genuine wildlife depth, or as much contrasting landscape within a practical travel radius.

Uganda's parks — Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Kibale National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Murchison Falls — are defined by their forest ecosystems, primate communities, and the lush, equatorial character of the Albertine Rift. Bwindi alone is home to approximately half the world's remaining mountain gorillas, distributed across four trekking sectors in one of Africa's most ancient and biodiverse rainforests. Kibale hosts the world's most accessible chimpanzee trekking, with 13 primate species in a single forest.

Kenya's parks — above all the Maasai Mara National Reserve in the southwest — deliver the open savannah landscape that defines East Africa's global safari identity: vast grasslands, enormous lion prides, cheetahs on the hunt, and, between July and October, the Great Wildebeest Migration — the movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle across the Mara River in scenes of dramatic natural spectacle. These are two entirely different categories of wildlife experience, and each makes the other richer by contrast.

The key insight: Travellers who trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi's ancient forest and then drive across the Maasai Mara's open plains the following week experience East Africa at its full depth — not a sampler, but the complete picture. No single country can deliver both in the same way that this combination does.

How a Combined Itinerary Works

The logistics of a Uganda–Kenya combination are simpler than many travellers expect. Both countries are served by major international airports — Entebbe International Airport (EBB) in Uganda and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi — with excellent regional connectivity between them via Kenya Airways and other carriers. A typical combined journey begins with a flight into Entebbe, spends several days in Uganda's parks, then flies to Nairobi to begin the Kenya portion before departing internationally from Nairobi.

At Kenlink Tours, our most popular combined Uganda and Kenya safari packages run between 10 and 14 days. Ten days is the practical minimum to do justice to both countries — allowing three to four nights in Uganda for Bwindi and optionally Kibale or Queen Elizabeth, and five to six nights in Kenya for the Maasai Mara and one additional park. Fourteen days opens up considerably more flexibility: a second Uganda park, a longer Mara stay during migration season, or the addition of Kenya's north for Samburu.

Recommended Combination: 12 Days

A 12-day Uganda–Kenya itinerary is the sweet spot for most travellers — long enough to feel unhurried in both countries, short enough to remain practical for international visitors with limited annual leave. A typical structure for our 12-day East Africa safari looks like this:

Days 1–2: Fly into Entebbe. Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Settle into your lodge in the forest.

Days 3–4: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi — one trek per day, each family visit limited to one hour with the gorillas. Optional second trek on Day 4, or a Batwa cultural trail experience.

Days 5–6: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park for chimpanzee trekking, or drive to Queen Elizabeth NP for the Kazinga Channel boat safari and Ishasha tree-climbing lions.

Day 7: Transfer to Entebbe and fly to Nairobi. Connect onward to the Maasai Mara by charter flight or road transfer.

Days 8–11: Full game drive days in the Maasai Mara — dawn and afternoon drives, big cat tracking, optional Mara River crossing during migration season (July–October).

Day 12: Return to Nairobi for international departure.

When to Go: Timing Your Combined Safari

One of the most common questions we receive at Kenlink Tours is about the best time of year for a Uganda–Kenya combination. The answer requires balancing the two countries' different seasonal rhythms.

Uganda's gorilla and chimpanzee trekking operates year-round without seasonal closure — rain does not cancel treks. However, the dry seasons — June to August and December to February — offer firmer forest trails and more comfortable trekking conditions in Bwindi's dense, high-altitude terrain. During the wet seasons, trails can be extremely muddy, and waterproof boots and gaiters become essential.

Kenya's Maasai Mara is excellent year-round, but the period from July to October is when the Great Migration river crossings occur — the moment when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest attempt the Mara River crossing in the presence of large Nile crocodiles. This is arguably the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on Earth, and if your travel dates allow it, timing the Kenya portion of your itinerary to coincide with migration season is strongly recommended. Our Maasai Mara migration safaris are timed specifically around the peak crossing months.

The practical sweet spot for a combined itinerary is June to August — Uganda's dry season coincides with the beginning of Kenya's migration season, delivering the best of both destinations simultaneously. December to January also works well, with good trekking conditions in Uganda and excellent resident predator activity in the Mara during the short dry period.

Practical Notes: Permits, Flights, and Budgeting

The Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs USD $800 per person and is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. It must be booked well in advance — during peak season, permits across all four Bwindi sectors sell out months ahead. Kenlink Tours secures all gorilla and chimpanzee permits on behalf of our clients as part of the combined safari package. You should never book international flights before confirming permit availability on your specific target dates.

The East Africa Tourist Visa (USD $100) covers multiple entries across Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda for 90 days — making it the most practical visa option for combined itineraries between the two countries. Single-entry Uganda visas (USD $50) and separate Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisations are also available.

Budget-wise, combined Uganda–Kenya safaris represent exceptional value for the wildlife depth delivered. Our combined packages start from approximately USD $3,500 per person for a 10-day mid-range option, inclusive of gorilla permits, accommodation, all meals, park fees, and internal transfers. Premium lodge options and longer itineraries are available on request — contact our team for a personalised quote tailored to your travel dates and preferences.

Why Book With Kenlink Tours?

Combining two countries in a single safari requires coordination that goes well beyond booking individual components. Gorilla permit availability, internal flight schedules, border logistics, and the seasonal dynamics of two distinct park systems all need to be managed by a team with on-the-ground expertise in both Uganda and Kenya. Kenlink Tours has designed and operated combined East Africa itineraries for over a decade, with established relationships with lodge partners in Bwindi, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, the Maasai Mara, and across Kenya's broader park network.

Every Kenlink Tours safari is privately guided, fully customised to your travel dates and group composition, and supported by a team that remains in contact throughout your journey. From the moment you arrive at Entebbe to your final departure from Nairobi, every transfer, every permit, every meal, and every wildlife encounter has been arranged in advance — leaving you free to be entirely present for one of the finest wildlife journeys on Earth.
