How a Combined Itinerary Works

The logistics of a Uganda–Kenya combination are simpler than many travellers expect. Both countries are served by major international airports — Entebbe International Airport (EBB) in Uganda and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi — with excellent regional connectivity between them via Kenya Airways and other carriers. A typical combined journey begins with a flight into Entebbe, spends several days in Uganda's parks, then flies to Nairobi to begin the Kenya portion before departing internationally from Nairobi.

Ten days is the practical minimum to do justice to both countries — allowing three to four nights in Uganda for Bwindi and optionally Kibale or Queen Elizabeth, and five to six nights in Kenya for the Maasai Mara and one additional park. Fourteen days opens up considerably more flexibility: a second Uganda park, a longer Mara stay during migration season, or the addition of Kenya's north for Samburu.

When to Go: Timing Your Combined Safari

One of the most common questions we receive at Kenlink Tours is about the best time of year for a Uganda–Kenya combination. The answer requires balancing the two countries' different seasonal rhythms.

Uganda's gorilla and chimpanzee trekking operates year-round without seasonal closure — rain does not cancel treks. However, the dry seasons — June to August and December to February — offer firmer forest trails and more comfortable trekking conditions in Bwindi's dense, high-altitude terrain. During the wet seasons, trails can be extremely muddy, and waterproof boots and gaiters become essential.

Kenya's Maasai Mara is excellent year-round, but the period from July to October is when the Great Migration river crossings occur — the moment when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest attempt the Mara River crossing in the presence of large Nile crocodiles. This is arguably the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on Earth, and if your travel dates allow it, timing the Kenya portion of your itinerary to coincide with migration season is strongly recommended. The practical sweet spot for a combined itinerary is June to August — Uganda's dry season coincides with the beginning of Kenya's migration season, delivering the best of both destinations simultaneously. December to January also works well, with good trekking conditions in Uganda and excellent resident predator activity in the Mara during the short dry period.

Practical Notes: Permits, Flights, and Budgeting

The Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs USD $800 per person and is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. It must be booked well in advance — during peak season, permits across all four Bwindi sectors sell out months ahead. You should never book international flights before confirming permit availability on your specific target dates.

The East Africa Tourist Visa (USD $100) covers multiple entries across Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda for 90 days — making it the most practical visa option for combined itineraries between the two countries. Single-entry Uganda visas (USD $50) and separate Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisations are also available.
