Where to see Big Five in Rwanda

Where to see Big Five in Rwanda. Rwanda may be most famous for its mountain gorillas, but it’s also home to Africa’s legendary Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino. These iconic animals can all be found in one incredible destination — Akagera National Park. Located in the east of Rwanda, Akagera offers classic African safari experiences in a beautifully restored ecosystem. It’s the only place in Rwanda where visitors can encounter the full Big Five in their natural habitat.

Akagera National Park – Rwanda’s Big Five Haven

Akagera National Park spans approximately 1,120 square kilometers along Rwanda’s eastern border with Tanzania. This vast and diverse park features open savannahs, woodlands, wetlands, and a series of lakes, making it ideal for large mammals and a wide variety of birdlife.

What sets Akagera apart is its remarkable conservation story. Following years of decline due to war and poaching, the park has undergone a dramatic recovery. Since 2010, Akagera has been co-managed by the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks. Their joint efforts have restored the park’s ecosystems, reintroduced wildlife, and built sustainable tourism.

In 2015, lions were reintroduced after a 15-year absence, followed by black rhinos in 2017 and white rhinos in 2021. These milestones marked Akagera’s return as a Big Five destination, making it one of Africa’s most successful conservation stories.

Spotting the Big Five in Akagera

Lions

The reintroduction of lions has been a major success, and the population is now thriving. These big cats are usually spotted in the northern parts of the park, especially during early morning or late afternoon game drives when they are most active.

Leopards

Leopards are naturally shy and elusive, but they do roam the woodlands and rocky outcrops of Akagera. Sightings often occur at dawn or during guided night drives, when these solitary predators are on the move.

Elephants

Akagera is home to a healthy elephant population. These majestic creatures are commonly seen near lakes and swamps, where they drink and bathe. Elephants can be found in both large herds and as solitary bulls, particularly in the central and southern parts of the park.

Buffalos

African buffalos are among the easiest of the Big Five to spot in Akagera. They graze in large herds across the open grasslands and often congregate near water sources. Their presence adds to the classic savannah safari experience.

Rhinoceros

Both black and white rhinos are present in the park, making Rwanda one of the few countries in Africa where you can see both species. Black rhinos are more secretive and are often found browsing in bushy areas, while white rhinos are more visible and tend to graze in open grasslands. Ranger-guided tours improve your chances of spotting these rare animals.

Best Time for a Big Five Safari

The dry seasons, from June to September and again from January to February, offer the best conditions for wildlife viewing. During these months, vegetation is thinner, and animals tend to gather around water sources, making them easier to find. The cooler, drier climate is also more comfortable for game drives.

Safari Activities in Akagera

Akagera offers a range of safari activities designed to immerse you in the wilderness:

  • Guided game drives (day and night) for close encounters with the Big Five

  • Boat safaris on Lake Ihema, ideal for spotting hippos, crocodiles, and water birds

  • Self-drive safaris for those who prefer to explore independently

  • Community visits and behind-the-scenes conservation tours

Combine Rwanda’s Big Five Safari with Uganda’s Affordable Gorilla Trekking

East Africa offers some of the most unforgettable safari experiences on the continent, and combining Rwanda’s Big Five safari in Akagera National Park with Uganda’s more affordable gorilla trekking is the perfect way to enjoy the best of both countries in one seamless adventure. While Rwanda is known for its well-organized safaris and clean infrastructure, Uganda offers great value, especially when it comes to gorilla permits — often costing significantly less than those in Rwanda.

This five-day cross-border itinerary blends Rwanda’s savannah game viewing with the awe-inspiring mountain gorilla experience in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks.

Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Akagera National Park

Your adventure begins in Kigali, Rwanda’s vibrant and modern capital. After a short briefing, you’ll set off on a scenic 2.5-hour drive to Akagera National Park, located in eastern Rwanda along the border with Tanzania. The landscape transitions from rolling hills to savannah plains and wetlands as you approach the park.

Upon arrival, check in at your lodge and enjoy a leisurely afternoon at the park. Depending on your arrival time, you might take an introductory game drive or simply relax and soak in the tranquil surroundings.

Day 2: Big Five Game Drive and Boat Safari

Rise early for a morning game drive in Akagera’s northern plains, the best area to spot the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. With the guidance of expert rangers, you’ll explore the park’s diverse habitats, encountering antelopes, giraffes, hippos, warthogs, zebras, and more along the way.

In the afternoon, enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, which offers an entirely different perspective of the park. Glide past pods of hippos and sunbathing crocodiles, while keeping an eye out for a variety of bird species such as African fish eagles and kingfishers.

Day 3: Transfer to Uganda – Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park

After breakfast, depart Akagera and begin your cross-border journey into Uganda. The scenic drive takes you north through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside before crossing into southwestern Uganda. Your destination is either Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, both of which are part of the greater Virunga conservation region.

This area is home to almost half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas and is renowned for its lush forests, terraced hillsides, and welcoming communities. Upon arrival, settle in at your lodge near the park, preparing for the incredible gorilla trekking experience the next day.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

This is the highlight of your trip. After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority guides. You’ll be assigned a gorilla family and then begin your gorilla trek through the forested hills.

The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorilla group, but the reward is priceless — an hour spent face-to-face with a family of wild mountain gorillas. Watch them feed, groom, and interact, an experience that is both humbling and unforgettable.

After your trek, return to the lodge to relax and reflect on this once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

Day 5: Return to Kigali or Entebbe for Departure

On your final day, you’ll depart for either Kigali or Entebbe, depending on your flight schedule and preferences. If time allows, you can stop for cultural visits, souvenir shopping, or a short city tour along the way.

For those flying out of Entebbe, optional add-ons like a visit to Lake Bunyonyi, the Equator crossing, or a city tour of Kampala can be arranged.

Optional Add-Ons in Uganda

To extend your experience, consider adding more activities in Uganda such as:

  • Lake Bunyonyi relaxation – Ideal after gorilla trekking

  • Batwa cultural tour – Discover the heritage of Uganda’s indigenous forest people

  • Golden monkey trekking – Available in Mgahinga

  • Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park

  • Game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park
