Where Exactly Is Mgahinga Gorilla National Park?

Mgahinga sits in Uganda’s Kisoro District, at the very tip of the Virunga Massif where Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC meet. It’s roughly a 3 to 4-hour drive from Kigali International Airport via the Cyanika border crossing, and about 8 to 9 hours by road from Entebbe, making it the fastest point of entry into Uganda’s gorilla territory for anyone flying into Rwanda first. How Is Mgahinga Different from Bwindi?

Uganda has two gorilla trekking parks, and they’re quite different in character:

• Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is Uganda’s larger, more established gorilla destination, with four trekking sectors and over 20 habituated families. It sits further from the Rwanda border and closer to Entebbe via a longer overland route or short domestic flight.
• Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is smaller and home to just one habituated gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, but it offers the shortest, most direct route from Rwanda and a genuinely spectacular volcanic backdrop.

Because Mgahinga has only one gorilla family and therefore a limited number of daily permits, trekking here requires more flexibility on dates than Bwindi does. Many operators, including Kenlink Tours, will check Nyakagezi’s permit availability first for Kigali-based itineraries and offer a short transfer into Bwindi’s southern Rushaga or Nkuringo sectors as a backup if Mgahinga is fully booked.

The Nyakagezi Gorilla Family

Mgahinga’s single resident troop, the Nyakagezi family, is one of the most storied gorilla families in the region. Unusually, the group is led by multiple silverbacks rather than one dominant male, and it has a history of occasionally wandering across the border into Rwanda or the DRC before returning to Uganda, since the mountains here have no fences and the gorillas move freely across the shared Virunga ecosystem. When the family is in residence, trekking typically takes place on the forested slopes of Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura, or Mount Sabyinyo, three of the eight Virunga volcanoes.

What Does a Mgahinga Gorilla Permit Cost?

A Mgahinga gorilla trekking permit is priced the same as a standard Bwindi permit through the Uganda Wildlife Authority: USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents, with a low-season discount to around USD 600 in April, May, and November. That’s still significantly less than Rwanda’s USD 1,500 permit through the Rwanda Development Board, which is exactly why so many Kigali-based travelers choose to cross the border rather than trek exclusively on the Rwandan side.

Beyond Gorillas: Golden Monkeys and Volcano Hikes

Mgahinga’s location gives it a bonus most Bwindi itineraries don’t offer: golden monkey trekking. These endangered, acrobatic primates live in the park’s bamboo zones, and a golden monkey permit costs considerably less than a gorilla permit, making it an easy and worthwhile add-on. The park’s three volcanoes also offer day hikes for travelers who want more than a single primate encounter, Mount Sabyinyo’s summit trek in particular rewards climbers with a viewpoint where Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC meet at a single boundary marker.

Should You Trek at Mgahinga or Head on to Bwindi?

If your priority is the shortest possible transfer from Kigali and you’re comfortable with limited date flexibility, Mgahinga is the obvious choice. If your travel dates are fixed and Nyakagezi’s permits aren’t available, or if you’d simply like a wider choice of gorilla families and trekking sectors, continuing on to Bwindi is usually worth the extra few hours on the road. Either way, both parks are managed by the same Uganda Wildlife Authority under the same conservation standards, so the quality and authenticity of the encounter itself doesn’t change.
