How is crossing Uganda Rwanda Boarder requirements? The Uganda-Rwanda border is one of the most tourist-friendly land crossings in East Africa. It is also one of the most rewarding — because on either side of it sits some of the most extraordinary wildlife country on the planet. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest lie to the south. Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale Forest, and Murchison Falls lie to the north. For the tens of thousands of travellers crossing between these two countries every year, the border is not a bureaucratic obstacle. It is the threshold between two great safari destinations, and crossing it well — with the right documents, the right operator, and the right safari plan on either side — is the key to an East Africa journey that runs without a single hitch.
At Kenlink Tours, we cross this border with clients regularly. Here is everything you need to know, from the documents in your bag to the parks on the other side.
There are three land border crossings between Uganda and Rwanda, each serving a different geographic corridor and a different set of safari destinations. Knowing which one to use is the first practical decision of a combined Uganda-Rwanda tour.
Cyanika / Kisoro is the crossing most popular with gorilla trekking tourists. On the Rwandan side, the border is located in Burera District near Musanze — Rwanda’s gateway town for Volcanoes National Park. On the Ugandan side, it connects to Kisoro town, which sits just outside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The Cyanika border point is not as busy as Katuna, making it faster and more convenient for tourists. Travellers heading to Bwindi or Mgahinga for gorilla trekking should use this crossing, as should those on the Ugandan side planning to visit Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Importantly, the Cyanika border opens at 6:00 AM Uganda time and 5:00 AM Rwanda time and is not open 24 hours like the Katuna border. Plan your crossing schedule accordingly — an early morning departure from Kigali is ideal. Gorilla Tours AfricaSilverback Gorilla Tours
Katuna / Gatuna is the busiest crossing between the two countries, found in Kabale district on the Uganda side and Gichumbi district on the Rwanda side. Commercial vehicles dominate this border post, and it is open 24 hours. For safari travellers, Katuna is the correct crossing for those heading from Kigali toward Kabale, Queen Elizabeth National Park, or continuing further north to Kampala and Entebbe. The drive from Kabale to Kigali Airport via Katuna takes under three hours, and the formalities — including vehicle paperwork for overland travellers — take approximately 30 minutes. It is the most straightforward of the three crossings for travellers on the main Kigali–Kampala highway. Silverback Gorilla ToursTripadvisor
Kagitumba / Mirama Hills in eastern Rwanda is a third option used by travellers coming from Akagera National Park in Rwanda and heading toward Mbarara and then on to Queen Elizabeth National Park or Kampala in Uganda. It sees far less tourist traffic than Cyanika or Katuna and is not typically used for gorilla trekking itineraries, but it is a useful option for travellers completing a full Rwanda circuit before crossing into Uganda’s western parks. Our 3 Days Bwindi Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali uses the Cyanika crossing, while our 10 Days Uganda Rwanda Combining Safari is designed around Katuna for travellers completing the fuller circuit. Pick and Transfer Safaris similarly uses Cyanika for their 3 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari Starting from Rwanda and Katuna for their 10 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari.
When crossing any border, have your passport, visa documentation, and yellow fever certificate readily available. Vehicle documentation is required if travelling overland with a rental or tour vehicle. Here is the full breakdown of what you need before you reach either crossing. Anywhere
Valid Passport. Carry your original passport at all times. Both Rwanda and Uganda immigration will stamp you in and out. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity beyond your travel dates and has blank pages available — each border crossing consumes at least two pages (exit stamp from one country, entry stamp from the other). Visa for Uganda. Most international travellers require an e-visa obtained before departure. Apply online at visas.immigration.go.ug two to three weeks before travel. Processing takes three to five business days. Do not rely on visa-on-arrival as queues grow long and denials happen. The standard Uganda tourist visa costs USD $50 for most nationalities. East African Community citizens — from Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda — can cross with a national identity card and do not require a visa. The East African Tourist Visa. This is the single most valuable document for travellers combining Uganda and Rwanda in one trip. The East African Tourist Visa allows for multiple entries to each country for 90 days and covers Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya. It costs USD $100 — USD $50 more than a single-country Uganda visa, but it eliminates the need to purchase a separate Rwanda visa and allows seamless re-entry to either country without additional fees. For any traveller spending time in both countries, this is almost always the more economical option. Gorilla Tours Africa
Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate. This is non-negotiable and enforced without exception. All travellers aged one year and above need yellow fever certificates. Health officials check before immigration. Vaccination must occur 10 days before travel. The certificate must be the original International Certificate of Vaccination (ICV) — a photocopy is not accepted. Rwanda checks it on arrival into Rwanda; Uganda checks it again at the border crossing into Uganda. Pack it with your passport, not in your checked luggage. Safari Masters
Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking Permits. These are not border documents in the strict sense, but they are the most important booking of your entire trip and must be in hand before you travel. Uganda gorilla trekking permits cost USD $800 per person, are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and are specific to a date, a sector, and a gorilla family group. They sell out months in advance in peak season. Our gorilla trekking adventures team procures all permits as part of your tour booking, coordinating the allocation with your border crossing date and first Ugandan overnight. Pick and Transfer Safaris similarly handles permit coordination for their Kigali-entry itineraries, including their popular 2 Days Uganda Gorilla Tour Starting from Kigali.
The crossing process at both Cyanika and Katuna follows the same sequence, and with an experienced driver-guide it is genuinely straightforward.
Exit your origin country first — get your exit stamp from Rwandan immigration. Then proceed to Uganda immigration, present your passport, e-visa, and yellow fever certificate, and receive your Uganda entry stamp. Your driver-guide will direct you through each stage and handle any vehicle documentation on the Ugandan side. On the Rwandan side of the border, stricter regulations apply and you may be asked to turn in your bags for inspection. This is routine, thorough, and quick — Rwanda’s border management is among the most professional in East Africa. You will receive a stamp on your passport and cross once all paperwork and information has been confirmed. Safari Masters + 2
Allow two to four hours minimum at the border. Weekends and holidays experience heavy traffic. Early morning arrivals reduce waiting times significantly. In practice, travellers using Cyanika during weekday mornings consistently report crossing in under an hour. Katuna, being busier with commercial traffic, can occasionally take longer, but experienced operators time the crossing to avoid peak commercial vehicle queues. The one-hour time difference — Uganda is GMT+3, Rwanda GMT+2 — means you gain an hour on the Uganda side. Crossing at 7:00 AM Rwanda time means it is already 8:00 AM in Uganda, which has practical implications for afternoon activities and lodge check-ins. Safari Masters
The border crossing only makes complete sense in the context of what surrounds it. Here is how to build a safari plan that makes full use of both countries.
Rwanda before Uganda. Opening your trip in Rwanda before crossing into Uganda is one of the most satisfying ways to structure a combined East Africa itinerary. Volcanoes National Park sits directly on the road to the Cyanika crossing, making golden monkey trekking a natural first activity before you cross into Uganda. Our 4-Day Rwanda-Uganda Golden Monkey and Gorilla Trekking pairs both primates across both countries in a single focused itinerary. If you have more time, Nyungwe Forest National Park in south-western Rwanda — home to chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and the celebrated canopy walkway — sits on the same southern road that leads to the Katuna crossing, making it a natural prelude to a Uganda tour. Our 3-Day Nyungwe Forest National Park Tour connects seamlessly into any Uganda circuit. For a complete Rwanda experience before Uganda, the 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari or the 5-Day Gorillas and Wildlife Rwanda Safari both deliver an outstanding opening chapter. Pick and Transfer Safaris’ 5 Days Best of Rwanda Primate Safari is another excellent Rwanda-opening option for travellers using their Kigali-entry packages.
Uganda immediately after the crossing. For travellers whose time is limited, the itinerary crosses the border and goes directly to the gorillas. The 2 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali is the most efficient version — day one crosses the Cyanika border and settles at a Bwindi lodge, day two is the gorilla trek, and the return to Kigali follows. The 3 Days Bwindi Gorilla Safari Starting from Kigali adds a third day for community visits, forest walks, or the cultural experience of spending an unhurried morning in the Impenetrable Forest before the return drive. Both itineraries use Cyanika and are among the most popular short tours we offer.
Full Uganda circuit after crossing. For travellers with a week or more, crossing the border is the beginning of a northward sweep through Uganda’s four greatest parks. After gorilla trekking in Bwindi, the circuit moves to Queen Elizabeth National Park for tree-climbing lions and the Kazinga Channel boat cruise — our 3 Days Wildlife Encounter to Queen Elizabeth National Park covers this park in dedicated detail. From Queen Elizabeth, Kibale Forest National Park is 2 hours north — the world’s best destination for chimpanzee trekking, covered in our 3-Day Chimpanzee Tracking Safari. The circuit continues to Murchison Falls before ending in Entebbe or returning to Kigali. Our 7 Days Gorilla and Wildlife Safari covers this complete loop, and the 10 Days Uganda Rwanda Combining Safari extends it into a full two-country experience. Pick and Transfer Safaris’ 10 Days Uganda Primates and Wildlife is an equally comprehensive option for travellers wanting the full northward circuit after crossing from Rwanda.
Uganda before Rwanda — the return crossing. For travellers ending in Kigali after a Uganda tour, the return crossing follows the same procedure in reverse. Most operators exit Uganda at Katuna into Rwanda if continuing to Kigali, as the road via Kabale to Kigali is fully tarmacked and faster than the Cyanika mountain route in the opposite direction. This option works equally well, and a Rwanda extension on the return leg — a night in Kigali, a Kigali city tour, or even a quick visit to Akagera National Park — turns the end of the journey into a meaningful final chapter. Multi-country itineraries combining Rwanda gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park with Uganda’s Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, and Murchison Falls allow for border crossings done seamlessly with professional safari operators. A few practical details that make a meaningful difference at the border, gathered from our team’s years of experience crossing with clients.
Cross early. Both Cyanika and Katuna are quieter in the first two hours after opening. A 6:30 AM departure from your Rwandan overnight gets you to Cyanika by 8:00 to 9:00 AM and comfortably into Uganda with a full afternoon ahead. Katuna at 7:00 AM avoids the commercial vehicle queue that builds through mid-morning.
Keep your Yellow Fever certificate and passport in your day bag, not in checked or stored luggage. You will need them at multiple points during the crossing and your driver-guide will prompt you at each stage.
Have your e-visa approval email printed and on your phone. While digital copies are generally accepted, a printed confirmation removes any ambiguity and speeds up the immigration desk process considerably.
Check weather conditions before travelling. Heavy rains can affect road conditions, especially near Cyanika and Kisoro en route to Bwindi. Follow your guide’s instructions for safe crossings. The Cyanika road through the mountains between Musanze and Kisoro is scenic but winding, and a 4×4 vehicle is the correct choice regardless of season. Kenlink Tours
Do not carry restricted items across the border. Rwanda enforces a ban on single-use plastic bags — any plastic shopping bags in your luggage will be confiscated at the Rwandan side. Pack reusable bags and decant any plastic-bagged items into fabric alternatives before your travel day.
The crossing itself takes under two hours with a professional driver-guide. The safari that surrounds it can take anywhere from two days to two weeks. Contact the Kenlink Tours team with your travel dates and the experiences you are looking for, and we will design a combined Rwanda-Uganda itinerary that uses the right crossing, the right parks, and the right permit timing — making the border a highlight of your journey rather than an interruption to it.
