Uganda is often celebrated as the home of gorilla trekking, but the country's game parks offer one of Africa's most rewarding Big Five safari experiences — one that combines the classic savannah species with ecosystems, landscapes, and wildlife encounters you simply cannot find anywhere else on the continent. Lion, leopard, elephant, African buffalo, and rhinoceros: all five are present in Uganda, and tracking them down takes you through national parks as varied and dramatic as any in East or Central Africa.
The challenge with Uganda's Big Five is that no single national park holds all five in one place — each animal has its stronghold, and the most satisfying Big Five safari involves understanding which park to visit for which species, how to connect them in a logical circuit, and what else each park offers alongside the headline animals. This guide covers exactly that: the best parks for each of the Big Five in Uganda, how to build the most efficient safari circuit, realistic sample itineraries, and everything you need to know before you book. Explore our full range of Uganda safari packages to see how we put it all together.
Uganda's Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros — are distributed across the country's national parks and protected areas in a way that rewards strategic planning. Understanding the best location for each animal is the foundation of any successful Big Five safari.
Uganda's lions are found primarily in Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls National Park. Queen Elizabeth's Ishasha sector in the far south holds one of Africa's rarest wildlife spectacles — tree-climbing lions that lounge in the branches of ancient fig trees. This behaviour is documented in only two places on Earth: Ishasha and Tanzania's Lake Manyara. Murchison Falls' lions roam the northern savannah, regularly seen on morning game drives near the Albert Nile. Kidepo Valley National Park in the far north also harbours lions and offers some of Uganda's most dramatic big cat sightings.
Leopards are present across Uganda's major game parks but, as across Africa, remain elusive. Kidepo Valley National Park offers Uganda's best leopard sighting rates, with individuals frequently spotted on rocky outcrops and in acacia scrub. Murchison Falls NP also has a healthy leopard population, particularly in the Budongo Forest fringe areas. In Queen Elizabeth NP, leopards are present but sightings are less reliable. Early morning and late afternoon game drives offer the best chance at all parks.
Uganda's elephant population is one of East Africa's most robust recovery stories. Murchison Falls National Park holds the country's largest elephant population — herds of 50–100 individuals are commonly seen on northern circuit game drives. Queen Elizabeth National Park also has excellent elephant viewing, particularly in the Kasenyi plains and around Mweya Peninsula. Kidepo Valley NP elephants are smaller-tusked and more arid-adapted. Forest elephants are even present within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, though rarely seen by gorilla trekkers.
Buffalo are the most reliably seen of Uganda's Big Five and are abundant in virtually every major national park. Queen Elizabeth National Park has enormous herds — 500+ animals grazing the open Kasenyi plains are a common sight. Murchison Falls NP and Kidepo Valley NP both have large populations. Even Lake Mburo National Park — Uganda's most accessible park from Kampala — has plentiful buffalo. Of all the Big Five, buffalo will almost certainly be your most frequent sighting on any Uganda safari.
Uganda's rhino story is one of Africa's most remarkable conservation recoveries. Rhinos were poached to local extinction in Uganda by the 1980s. Today, Ziwa Rhino & Wildlife Ranch — a private sanctuary in Nakasongola district, midway between Kampala and Murchison Falls — is the only place in Uganda where you can see wild rhinos, and uniquely, you track them entirely on foot with armed ranger escorts. The sanctuary currently hosts over 33 southern white rhinos and the herd is steadily growing as part of a long-term programme to eventually reintroduce rhinos into Murchison Falls National Park. A rhino tracking visit at Ziwa takes 1–3 hours and is typically slotted into the drive between Kampala and Murchison Falls — making it an easy and highly rewarding addition to any northern Uganda safari circuit.
Uganda's Big Five reality check: Uganda's rhinos are only at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — not in a national park. For travellers who define a Big Five safari as "all five in one park," Uganda requires planning across multiple locations. But this actually makes for a richer safari: you experience several distinct ecosystems, landscapes, and wildlife communities rather than a single park. Our circuits below are designed to cover all five animals as efficiently as possible.
Here are Uganda's top Big Five parks ranked by their overall wildlife density, Big Five representation, and overall safari quality — helping you prioritise which parks to include in your itinerary.
Uganda's most visited game park and its Big Five centrepiece. Lions (including the famous Ishasha tree-climbers), elephants, buffalo, and leopard all call it home. The Kazinga Channel boat cruise adds hippo and crocodile encounters of an entirely different scale. Combine with a gorilla trek at Bwindi — just 2 hours south — for the ultimate Uganda safari double. Read the full Queen Elizabeth NP guide.
Uganda's largest national park and arguably its most spectacular — the Nile thunders through a 7-metre gap in the rock to create one of Africa's most dramatic waterfalls. Lion, elephant, and buffalo are abundant on the northern bank game drives; leopard sightings are possible along forest fringes. The Nile launch cruise to the base of the falls passes through one of the world's highest concentrations of hippos and Nile crocodiles. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary sits on the drive up from Kampala, making rhino tracking a natural addition.
Uganda's most remote and most dramatic game park, set in the semi-arid Karamoja region near the South Sudan and Kenya borders. Kidepo is justifiably famous among safari connoisseurs for its rugged beauty, concentrated wildlife — particularly lion and cheetah — and the near-total absence of other tourists. All of the Big Five except rhino are present, and Kidepo is Uganda's best park for leopard sightings. Best reached by charter flight from Entebbe.
The only place in Uganda to see rhinos — making it an essential stop on any Big Five checklist. Ziwa is a private sanctuary near Nakasongola, 3 hours from Kampala on the Masindi highway. Rhino tracking is done entirely on foot with armed ranger escorts, giving you an intimate and memorable encounter with Uganda's recovering white rhino population. A visit typically takes half a day and is easily incorporated into the drive between Kampala and Murchison Falls. Also well-known for shoebill stork sightings in the adjacent wetlands.
Uganda's most accessible savannah park from Kampala — just 3 hours southwest — and ideal for travellers with limited time or for adding a quick game drive at the start or end of a longer western circuit. Buffalo are abundant; zebra, impala, eland, and topi are commonly seen; hippo and crocodile populate the lake shores. While lions are absent, Lake Mburo is a superb warm-up game park and Uganda's only park with zebra. Best experienced as a circuit opener rather than a primary Big Five destination.
Use this at-a-glance matrix to see exactly which Big Five species are present in each of Uganda's major game parks, and what bonus wildlife each park adds to the experience.

Uganda's Big Five parks connect in several logical road and air circuits. Here are the three most popular routes that KenLink Tours uses to build complete Big Five safaris.
Covers all Big Five + chimps + gorillas in one loop
Best for pure game viewing; charter flight to Kidepo recommended
Big Five minus rhino; pairs gorillas and game viewing. See our Kigali transfers guide
Getting around Uganda's Big Five parks: All circuits above are road-based with a private 4×4 vehicle — essential for Uganda's unpaved park tracks and rainy season conditions. KenLink Tours uses high-clearance Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs for optimal game viewing. For travellers adding Kidepo Valley NP to their itinerary, a charter flight from Entebbe (approx. USD 350–500 one way) is strongly recommended — the road journey is 10+ hours each way. Our team advises on the optimal combination of driving and flying for your specific itinerary and budget.
Here are four KenLink Tours itineraries covering Uganda's Big Five at different durations, budgets, and entry points. All include private 4×4 game drives, expert naturalist guides, accommodation, and park fees, and can be tailored to your preferences.

Uganda's most complete safari: Big Five + chimps + gorillas
Uganda's ultimate safari — all Big Five + leopard focus + chimps + gorillas
Travellers who have been on safari in Kenya or Tanzania sometimes ask how Uganda's Big Five safari compares. The honest answer is that Uganda is different rather than lesser — and for certain animals and experiences, it is genuinely superior.
Tree-climbing lions in Ishasha are found nowhere in Kenya or Tanzania. Uganda's mountain gorillas are a category of wildlife experience that no savannah safari can replicate. Uganda's chimpanzee tracking at Kibale is among the world's finest primate experiences. And the Murchison Falls boat cruise along the Nile — passing hundreds of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and Rothschild's giraffes drinking at the water's edge — is simply one of Africa's great wildlife boat experiences.
Uganda's game parks are less densely packed with animals than the Masai Mara or Serengeti during the wildebeest migration. There is no migration in Uganda, and lion sightings — while excellent — can require more game drive time than in Kenya's top parks during migration season. The trade-off is that Uganda's parks are far less crowded: a vehicle exclusivity and sense of wilderness that is increasingly rare in East Africa's most famous safari destinations.
Kenya and Tanzania have rhinos in their national parks; Uganda's rhinos are only at Ziwa Sanctuary. This is the one area where Uganda's Big Five experience requires an extra detour — but the on-foot rhino tracking at Ziwa is actually more intimate and exciting than a vehicle-based rhino sighting, making it a genuinely memorable experience in its own right rather than a compromise.
Combining Uganda with Kenya or Tanzania: Many travellers add Uganda to a broader East Africa safari that includes Kenya's Masai Mara or Tanzania's Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. This gives you the complete Big Five in multiple settings — savannah migration in Kenya/Tanzania plus tree-climbing lions, gorillas, and chimps in Uganda. KenLink Tours partners with sister operators across East Africa to offer seamlessly combined multi-country safari packages. Contact our team for a custom multi-country itinerary.
