Uganda, with its lush forests, rich biodiversity, and strong conservation efforts, is one of the best destinations in Africa for chimpanzee tracking. Known as the “Pearl of Africa,” Uganda is home to over 5,000 wild chimpanzees spread across pristine tropical rainforests — making it one of the finest primate destinations on the continent.
At Kenlink Tours, we have been crafting unforgettable chimpanzee tracking safaris since 2010. Our expert guides, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA)-certified rangers, and deep knowledge of every forest ensure you experience this encounter safely, responsibly, and with the highest possible chance of a sighting.
Chimpanzee tracking involves trekking into Uganda’s tropical rainforests with a professional guide and UWA ranger in search of habituated chimpanzee communities — groups that have been carefully accustomed to human presence over a period of two or more years.
Chimpanzees share approximately 98.7% of their DNA with humans, making every encounter feel profoundly moving. Unlike the calm, still experience of gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking is dynamic, fast-paced, and energetic. Chimps swing through the canopy, vocalise loudly, play with their young, use tools, and interact with one another in ways that feel unmistakably familiar.
Once a habituated group is located, visitors are permitted exactly one hour in their presence — enough time to watch, photograph, and absorb one of Africa’s greatest wildlife experiences.

Uganda offers several exceptional chimpanzee tracking destinations, each with its own character, landscape, and chimpanzee community.
Location: Fort Portal, Western Uganda | Difficulty: Moderate
Kibale Forest National Park is the undisputed chimpanzee capital of Uganda — and indeed of all Africa. Home to over 1,500 chimpanzees and 13 primate species, it boasts the highest primate density on the continent. The habituated communities at Kanyanchu Visitor Centre offer near-guaranteed sightings on both morning and afternoon sessions, making this the most reliable and rewarding destination for chimpanzee tracking in East Africa.
Beyond chimpanzees, Kibale is famous for its red colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, over 375 bird species, and forest elephants. A guided Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk in the afternoon is the perfect complement to a morning of chimp tracking.
For the most immersive experience available anywhere in Uganda, the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX) at Kibale allows visitors to spend a full day — from dawn to dusk — alongside UWA researchers and a semi-habituated group. This is a truly extraordinary encounter.
Highlights: 1,500+ chimps · 13 primate species · Habituation experience · Bigodi Wetland walk · 375 bird species · 95%+ sighting success rate

Location: Murchison Falls National Park, North-West Uganda | Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
East Africa’s largest mahogany forest lies within the spectacular Murchison Falls National Park. Budongo is home to around 800 wild chimpanzees and features flat, walkable terrain that makes it ideal for first-time trackers or visitors who prefer a gentler hike.
The famous Royal Mile trail winds through ancient mahogany trees and is celebrated equally for chimpanzees and over 360 bird species. Budongo also attracts international researchers, meaning there is often a chance to speak with scientists studying chimp behaviour in the field — a unique bonus.
Combining Budongo with a Murchison Falls game drive, a Nile boat cruise, and a visit to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary makes for one of Uganda’s most complete safari itineraries.
Highlights: 800 chimps · Easy terrain · Ancient mahogany trees · 360+ bird species · Combine with Murchison Falls NP

Location: Queen Elizabeth National Park, Western Uganda | Difficulty: Moderate–Hard
One of Uganda’s most dramatic landscapes — a steep, lush canyon carved into the open savannah floor of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Descend into the “Valley of Apes” to track a small but fascinating isolated chimpanzee community in a setting unlike any other in Africa.
The contrast of dense green gorge against the surrounding golden plains is spectacular, and the experience of tracking chimps here feels particularly intimate. While sighting success rates are lower than in Kibale, the landscape and wildlife combination — chimps in the morning, then a Kazinga Channel boat safari in the afternoon — is genuinely unmatched.
Highlights: Dramatic gorge scenery · Combine with big game drives · Kazinga Channel boat safari · Tree-climbing lions in Ishasha nearby

Location: Bushenyi District, South-West Uganda | Difficulty: Easy
An affordable and off-the-beaten-path alternative that is often overlooked — but should not be. Kalinzu is home to approximately 300 chimpanzees, with around 50 habituated for tourism, and features flat forest trails that are gentle on the legs.
Its greatest advantage is location: Kalinzu sits just 150 km from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, making it the most practical option for travellers combining gorilla trekking with chimpanzee tracking in a compact itinerary without long detours.
Highlights: Budget-friendly permit · Close to Bwindi · 300 chimps · Flat easy terrain · Rich forest birdlife

Here is how a typical Kenlink Tours chimpanzee tracking day unfolds:
5:30 – 6:00 AM — Pre-Dawn Briefing Gather at the ranger station for a full orientation covering chimpanzee behaviour, forest safety rules, health guidelines, and photography etiquette. Advance trackers have already entered the forest to locate the chimps before you arrive.
6:00 AM — Entering the Forest At first light, you enter the rainforest. Your Kenlink Tours guide and UWA ranger read the forest — fresh knuckle-prints in the mud, broken vegetation, the distant sound of calls — and lead you toward the habituated group.
Variable — The Chase Chimpanzees can range several kilometres in a single day. Your trek may take 30 minutes or up to 4 hours, depending on where the group has moved. Radio contact with advance trackers keeps your team on course — and the pursuit is very much part of the thrill.
The Encounter — One Hour Face-to-Face The moment you hear that first shrieking call or see a black shape swinging overhead, time stops. You have exactly one regulated hour with the community, maintaining a safe 8-metre distance. Watch them groom, feed, play with their young, squabble and socialise in a way that feels profoundly, unmistakably human.
Return — Debrief and Reflections Back at the station, your ranger can identify individual chimpanzees by name and share their personal histories. Many visitors find this conversation as enriching as the trek itself. Your Kenlink Tours vehicle awaits for the drive back to your lodge.
Optional Afternoon — Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary Walk Extend your primate day with a guided community walk through Bigodi Wetland, home to 8 primate species, 200+ bird species, and a wonderful community conservation project that Kenlink Tours proudly supports.

What to wear: Long-sleeved shirts and trousers in dark, earthy colours — green, khaki, brown. Avoid bright colours and avoid blue or black, which attract forest insects. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support are essential. Thin inner gloves help when pushing through undergrowth.
What to pack: Carry at least 2 litres of water, energy snacks, insect repellent, sunscreen, a rain poncho, and a camera with a telephoto lens. Binoculars add another dimension when the chimps are high in the canopy.
Photography: Switch your camera and phone to silent mode — flash photography is strictly prohibited. A 200–400mm lens works best in forest light. Push your ISO high to compensate for the dim canopy. And remember to put the camera down sometimes — just look, and absorb the moment.
Health precautions: If you have a cold, flu, or any respiratory illness, you will not be permitted to trek. Chimpanzees share 98.7% of our DNA and are highly susceptible to human diseases. The minimum 8-metre distance must be maintained at all times. Do not eat or drink in the chimps’ presence.
Best time to visit: The dry seasons — June to September and December to February — offer the most navigable trails and highest sighting rates. The green season (March–May, October–November) brings lush scenery, fewer tourists, and lower lodge rates, while chimp activity remains high.
Book your permit early: Kibale permits are limited to 8 people per group per day. Peak season permits sell out 3–6 months in advance. Contact Kenlink Tours as early as possible — we guarantee your permit as part of your booking.
Is chimpanzee tracking guaranteed? While wildlife can never be 100% guaranteed, Kibale Forest’s sighting success rate consistently exceeds 95%. Advance trackers enter the forest before dawn and maintain radio contact throughout your trek. On the rare occasion a group cannot be found, Uganda Wildlife Authority offers a refund or rescheduling.
How fit do I need to be? A moderate level of fitness is recommended. Treks can last 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the chimps are, and the terrain can be steep and muddy. Budongo Forest offers flatter trails for those with mobility concerns. Walking sticks are available at all trailheads.
What is the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX)? Standard tracking gives you one hour with a fully habituated community. The Habituation Experience (CHEX) at Kibale places you with a semi-habituated group alongside UWA researchers for an entire day from dawn to dusk — witnessing feeding, resting, territorial behaviour and nest-building in an immersive, research-style encounter.
Can I combine chimp tracking with gorilla trekking? Absolutely — and it is one of Africa’s greatest wildlife combinations. Uganda is one of the only countries where you can track both in a single trip. Our 7-Day Wildlife, Gorillas & Chimpanzees Safari and 5-Day Primate Safari both cover this combination perfectly.
How do I get to Kibale from Kampala? Kibale is approximately 320 km southwest of Kampala — a 4.5 to 5-hour drive through Mubende and Fort Portal. Charter flights from Entebbe to Kasese airstrip reduce this to under an hour. All Kenlink Tours packages include full ground transfers from Kampala or Entebbe International Airport.
Our team has been crafting Uganda safari experiences since 2010. Whether you want a focused 5-day chimp and gorilla escape or a grand 25-day Uganda adventure, Kenlink Tours handles every detail — permits, lodges, transfers, and guides — so you simply show up and be amazed.
