Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest of Rwanda

Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda | Kenlink Tours

Deep in the southwestern highlands of Rwanda, where ancient mist clings to the ridgelines and the forest hums with life, lies one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife encounters — chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Rwanda is most famous among safari travellers for its mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park — and rightly so. But tucked in the country's southwestern corner is a wilderness experience that rivals the gorillas in emotional intensity and surpasses them in sheer ecological wonder. Nyungwe Forest is Rwanda's — and arguably Central Africa's — most important ancient rainforest, and it is home to one of the largest and most accessible communities of wild chimpanzees on the continent.

At Kenlink Tours, we believe Nyungwe belongs on every serious safari itinerary. Whether you are travelling through Rwanda alone or combining it with Uganda in an unforgettable East Africa primate circuit, chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe is an experience that connects you to the wild in a way very few places on earth can match.

About Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park stretches across more than 1,020 square kilometres of montane rainforest in Rwanda's south-western highlands, rising from 1,600 to nearly 2,950 metres above sea level. Scientists estimate that parts of Nyungwe have remained continuously forested for over half a million years, making this living ecosystem one of the most ancient and biodiverse forests in all of Africa.

The park shelters 13 primate species, over 300 bird species including 29 Albertine Rift endemics found nowhere else on earth, hundreds of tree species, rare orchids, and an astonishing range of butterflies and reptiles. Nyungwe is also the source of the Nile's most southern headwaters, feeding Lake Kivu and ultimately contributing to the great river that defined civilisations for millennia. Walking through Nyungwe is walking through deep time — a living system that has survived ice ages, volcanic eruptions, and all the upheavals of human history. It is humbling, immense, and utterly beautiful.

"To stand in Nyungwe and hear chimpanzees call across the canopy is to understand, in the most visceral way possible, just how alive this planet truly is."

The Chimpanzee Trekking Experience

Nyungwe is home to more than 500 chimpanzees, and Rwanda's tourism authorities have carefully habituated several communities specifically for responsible visitor trekking. The experience begins early in the morning — typically at the Uwinka Visitor Centre or the Gisakura Park Headquarters — where you receive a thorough briefing from your guides and the ranger team before setting off into the forest.

The trek itself is one of Nyungwe's greatest gifts. Unlike primate encounters that feel rushed or orchestrated, chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe unfolds organically. Trackers communicate via radio as the habituated community moves through its daily range. You walk through tunnels of ancient trees, cross suspended bridges above the canopy, pass cascading streams and carpets of moss-covered roots, until the sound of the chimps — their unmistakable vocalisations, their dramatic movement through the treetops — signals that you are close.

When you find them, you are permitted one full hour in the presence of the community. You watch them feed on wild figs, groom each other with extraordinary tenderness, play, negotiate territory, and simply live their complex social lives — virtually indifferent to your presence. The similarity to human behaviour is arresting. Many travellers describe this moment as the single most profound wildlife encounter of their lives, equal in emotional power to meeting the mountain gorillas themselves.

🌅

Early Morning Start

Treks depart at 8:00 AM for the best chance of locating chimpanzees during their active morning feeding period.

Duration & Terrain

Treks typically last 2 to 6 hours depending on the chimps' location. The terrain is hilly — a moderate fitness level is recommended.

🎟

Permits Required

Chimpanzee trekking permits must be arranged in advance. Kenlink Tours handles all permit logistics as part of your package.

📷

Photography

A telephoto lens of 200mm or more is strongly recommended. Flash photography is not permitted in the presence of the chimpanzees.

Beyond the Chimps — What Else Awaits

Nyungwe richly rewards those who linger. The Igishigishigi Canopy Walkway — a 160-metre suspended bridge at treetop height — offers a perspective on the forest that is genuinely breathtaking, particularly in the early morning when mist fills the valleys below. Angola colobus monkey treks bring you face to face with one of Africa's most striking primates in troops of up to 400 individuals — one of the largest primate gatherings anywhere on the continent.

For birders, Nyungwe is a paradise unto itself, with species such as the Ruwenzori turaco, African green broadbill, and scores of sunbirds and weavers found nowhere else outside the Albertine Rift. Waterfall hikes lead to hidden cascades deep within the forest interior, and tea plantation walks along the forest edge — Rwanda's famous green terraces stretching to the horizon — offer a peaceful and beautiful contrast to the dense jungle within.

Essential Tips for Your Nyungwe Trek

  • 01
Book your chimpanzee permits well in advance — at least 3 to 6 months ahead during peak season from June to September. Kenlink Tours manages all permit bookings on your behalf.
  • 02
Wear long-sleeved, neutral-coloured clothing and sturdy, waterproof hiking boots. The forest floor is frequently wet, and the terrain includes steep, rooted trails.
  • 03
Bring a good raincoat at all times — Nyungwe receives heavy rainfall year-round, and afternoon showers are common even during the dry season months.
  • 04
Pack a day bag with water, snacks, insect repellent, and sunscreen. The trek can last most of the morning, so energy and hydration are important.
  • 05
Maintain a minimum distance of 8 metres from the chimpanzees at all times, and follow all ranger instructions carefully to protect both yourself and the animals.
  • 06
Combine Nyungwe with Rwanda's gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, then cross into Uganda for the ultimate East Africa primate circuit — Kenlink Tours designs the entire journey for you.
