Gorilla trekking in Rushaga Sector Bwindi. Rushaga is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park's most gorilla-rich sector — home to more habituated families than anywhere else in the park, and the only place in the world where you can participate in the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Here is everything you need to know before you book.
Located in the southern reaches of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Rushaga sector has grown over the past decade into one of the most important gorilla trekking destinations in the world. While Buhoma in the north has the longest history, Rushaga has the numbers — more habituated gorilla families, more available permits, and exclusive access to a wildlife experience found nowhere else on Earth. For travellers who want maximum flexibility in booking, a deeper gorilla experience, or the extraordinary opportunity to spend a full day alongside a gorilla family in the process of becoming habituated to people, Rushaga is the sector that delivers. At Kenlink Tours, we include Rushaga in many of our Uganda gorilla safari itineraries — and for the right traveller, it is the best trekking decision they will make.
Where is Rushaga Sector?
Rushaga sits on the southern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, in the Kisoro District of far southwestern Uganda — close to the borders of both Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The sector headquarters and trekking briefing point are in the small community of Rushaga, a short drive from Kisoro town, which serves as the nearest urban centre and a convenient overnight base.
Rushaga's southern location makes it the closest Bwindi sector to Kigali, Rwanda — a journey of approximately four to five hours via the Cyanika border crossing. This makes Rushaga the natural first choice for travellers flying into Kigali and combining a Uganda gorilla safari starting from Kigali with their Bwindi visit. Our guide on landing in Kigali or Entebbe for a gorilla safari walks through both entry point options in full detail. Our transfers from Kigali to Uganda page also covers the logistics of the cross-border drive to southern Bwindi sectors including Rushaga.
How does Rushaga compare? Of all four Bwindi sectors, Rushaga holds the highest concentration of habituated gorilla families — giving it the most permit availability and the greatest flexibility for travellers booking at shorter lead times or during peak season. Our guide on which part of Bwindi is easiest for gorilla trekking explains how Rushaga compares with Buhoma, Ruhija, and Nkuringo in terms of terrain, difficulty, and experience character.
The Gorilla Families of Rushaga Sector
Rushaga is home to more habituated gorilla families than any other sector in Bwindi. Each family has its own distinct social structure, personality, and history — and because there are more families here than elsewhere in the park, visitors often find permits more available and the briefing-morning assignment process more flexible than at other sectors.
| Gorilla Family | Character & Notes | Trek Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Nshongi Group | One of Bwindi's largest habituated gorilla families — at its peak numbering over 36 individuals, though families naturally split over time. The sheer scale of the Nshongi encounter, with multiple silverbacks and dozens of family members moving through the forest together, makes for an especially dramatic experience. | Moderate to challenging depending on daily location |
| Mishaya Group | Named after its founding silverback — one of Bwindi's most impressive males, who broke away from Nshongi to form his own group. Mishaya is a relatively small family, which makes for an intimate and close encounter. The group is known for moving into steep, forested terrain that rewards the effort with exceptional proximity. | Moderate to challenging — steep terrain frequently |
| Kahungye Group | A large, well-established family with multiple silverbacks — a rarity that makes Kahungye particularly compelling for observers interested in male social dynamics and inter-male interaction. The family is known for moving across a wide range within Rushaga's forest. | Moderate — varied terrain across the southern forest |
| Busingye Group | A smaller, more recently habituated family that offers a quieter and more intimate trekking experience. Busingye means "peace" in the local language — a name that reflects the calm, settled nature of this group's interactions with visitors. A good choice for those preferring a less physically demanding trek. | Easy to moderate — often found in accessible terrain |
| Bweza Group | Another habituated Rushaga family offering excellent trekking access. Bweza is known for regularly ranging through different altitudes of the forest, giving visitors varied forest environments depending on the day's positioning by the tracking team. | Moderate — variable daily positioning |
As with all Uganda gorilla safari experiences, your assigned family is confirmed at the morning briefing at Rushaga headquarters after the tracking team reports back with that day's family positions. Kenlink Tours manages all permit allocation on behalf of our clients — contact our Uganda safari bookings team to discuss which family might be most appropriate for your fitness level and preferences.
The Gorilla Habituation Experience — Rushaga's Unique Offering
The single most distinctive thing about Rushaga sector is that it is the only place in the world where you can participate in a Gorilla Habituation Experience. This is not the standard one-hour gorilla trek — it is a full day from dawn alongside a gorilla family that is currently in the multi-year process of becoming habituated to human presence. The permit costs USD $1,500 per person, allows a maximum of four visitors per group, and grants up to four hours of observation — four times longer than the standard trekking encounter.
Our dedicated guide on the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga sector explains the full process in detail, but in brief: while standard trekking visits fully habituated families — groups that have been completely accustomed to human presence over several years — the habituation experience brings you into contact with a semi-habituated family that is still being carefully and gradually exposed to people by researchers and rangers. Your four hours alongside this group provides insight into gorilla behaviour, social structure, and the conservation research process that a standard one-hour encounter can never match.
- 1 hour with a fully habituated gorilla family
- Maximum 8 visitors per family per day
- Multiple fully habituated families to choose from in Rushaga
- Trek duration 1–8 hours depending on family location
- The classic, defining gorilla trekking experience
- Available every day of the year; no seasonal closure
- Up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family
- Maximum 4 visitors per group — the most intimate experience available
- Only available in Rushaga sector — nowhere else in the world
- Full day from early morning alongside researchers and rangers
- Extraordinary insight into gorilla behaviour and research process
- Subject to availability — book well in advance through Kenlink Tours
Our page on whether there is gorilla habituation in Rwanda confirms that this experience is exclusive to Uganda — and within Uganda, exclusive to Rushaga. It is the deepest gorilla encounter available anywhere on Earth and an experience that many of our clients describe as the most extraordinary thing they have ever done in nature. If you are considering the habituation experience, read our full Rushaga habituation guide and then contact our Uganda group tours or private safari team to check permit availability for your dates.
The Trekking Experience — What Rushaga Feels Like
Trekking in Rushaga begins at the sector headquarters with a 7:30am briefing. Groups are assigned their gorilla family, introduced to their lead Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger, and briefed on park regulations before setting off to the trailhead. The southern forest of Bwindi at Rushaga has a character that feels different from the northern Buhoma sector — the terrain tends to be steeper, the forest denser in places, and the views across the rolling volcanic hills of the southwest are more dramatically open when you break from the forest cover.
The trek duration varies enormously by day — the tracking team locates each family from first light, and their report at the briefing determines whether you are walking thirty minutes or five hours to reach your assigned group. Either way, the moment the forest goes quiet and your ranger signals you to stop and lower your voice is the moment Rushaga delivers what every traveller has come this far to experience. For a vivid account of what the gorilla encounter itself feels like, read our guide on what it's like to trek gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda.
Permit booking: The Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs USD $800 per person and is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). The Gorilla Habituation Experience permit costs USD $1,500. Both are secured through Kenlink Tours on behalf of our clients. Rushaga permits sell out during peak season (June–August and December–January) — book as early as possible. The sector's larger number of gorilla families means permit availability is generally better here than at Buhoma or Ruhija, but advance planning is always essential.
Best Time to Trek in Rushaga
Rushaga — like all of Bwindi — is a year-round gorilla trekking destination. Our full guide on the best time to see gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda covers the seasonal question in detail, but in summary: the dry seasons of June to August and December to February offer firmer, less muddy trails and easier conditions underfoot — particularly important in Rushaga's steeper terrain. The wet seasons of March to May and September to November bring lush, atmospheric forest conditions and generally shorter permit lead times, and the gorillas move through the forest regardless of rainfall. A raincoat and waterproof boots are essential at any time of year.
Getting to Rushaga
From Kigali: 4–5 hours via Cyanika border and Kisoro. From Kampala: 9–10 hours via Kabale. The best route from Queen Elizabeth NP to southern Bwindi is via the Ishasha sector — approximately 4–5 hours with wildlife viewing en route.
Permit Costs
Standard gorilla trek: USD $800 per person. Gorilla Habituation Experience: USD $1,500 per person. Both secured through Kenlink Tours. See our guide on how much a Uganda safari costs for full pricing context.
Combining Parks
Rushaga pairs naturally with Queen Elizabeth NP (tree-climbing lions, Kazinga Channel) and Kibale Forest (chimpanzee tracking) on the classic southwest Uganda safari circuit. See our Kigali–Bwindi–Queen Elizabeth–Kibale itinerary.
Add Lake Bunyonyi
Lake Bunyonyi, just 25 km from Kisoro, is the perfect one- or two-night rest day before or after your Rushaga trek — a scenic, tranquil freshwater lake ringed by terraced hills. Ask our safari team to include it in your itinerary.
What to Pack for Rushaga Trekking
-
1Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support — Rushaga's terrain is steeper and more demanding than Buhoma. Good boots with a firm ankle grip are essential, especially on the descent through dense undergrowth. This is the single most important item you will pack for your Bwindi gorilla safari.
-
2Long sleeves and long trousers in dark or neutral colours — park regulations require full arm and leg coverage on all gorilla treks. Dark colours are preferred; avoid bright patterns or white, which can distress the gorillas. Full coverage also protects against stinging nettles in the forest understorey.
-
3A quality rain jacket — Rushaga's southern forest receives significant rainfall. Even in the dry season, mist and brief showers are common in the early morning trekking hours. A packable, waterproof shell is essential kit for all Uganda safari experiences in the forest.
-
4Gardening gloves — rangers consistently recommend lightweight gardening gloves for gripping vegetation on the steep sections of the Rushaga trails. Inexpensive, lightweight, and genuinely useful — especially on the descent from higher-altitude family locations.
-
5Two litres of water and trail snacks — for a Gorilla Habituation Experience full day or a longer standard trek. Your lodge at Rushaga will typically prepare a packed lunch for full-day excursions if arranged in advance. See our Uganda health and preparation guide for further pre-trip advice.
-
6A camera without flash — no flash photography is permitted on any gorilla trek. Any camera or smartphone works for the standard trek; for the habituation experience, where you spend four hours with the group and have more opportunity for varied shots, a zoom lens adds significant value. See our tips on gorilla and primate photography for more guidance.
Planning Your Rushaga Safari Itinerary
Rushaga's position in the southern part of Bwindi and its proximity to the Rwandan and DRC borders make it a natural anchor for several of the most rewarding Uganda safari itineraries we offer. The most popular short itinerary is three days in Rushaga — one night of transfer, one gorilla trek or habituation experience day, and one additional forest activity day — combined with two nights in Kisoro or at a nearby lodge, with an optional rest day at Lake Bunyonyi before continuing the journey.
For travellers wanting to combine Rushaga with the full classic southwest Uganda circuit, our Kigali–Bwindi–Queen Elizabeth–Kibale–Lake Bunyonyi itinerary builds the most comprehensive primate and savannah experience available in the region. Adding a Queen Elizabeth National Park game drive and the Kazinga Channel boat cruise gives your Bwindi trek a powerful savannah wildlife counterpoint — and the drive from Queen Elizabeth to southern Bwindi via the Ishasha sector passes through the territory of the famous tree-climbing lions, making the transfer itself a wildlife experience worth building into your schedule.
For those doing a double gorilla trek — a Rushaga day combined with a Buhoma day — you will experience two completely different characters of Bwindi forest, two different gorilla families, and two entirely different trekking experiences within the same park. This is one of the most consistently praised itinerary choices among our returning Uganda gorilla safari clients. For travellers considering a luxury approach to the gorilla experience, our Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge page details one of the finest lodge options in Rushaga's vicinity, and our Uganda luxury gorilla tours page outlines our full range of high-end safari options.
