Murchison Falls Safari with Nearby National Parks. Murchison Falls National Park is a superb safari destination on its own. But many travellers spend days getting to Uganda, only to visit one park and head home. With a little planning, the same trip can include rhinos, chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions, remote wilderness or even mountain gorillas — often for only a few extra days.
This guide explains how to plan a Murchison Falls safari with nearby national parks. We look at every park and reserve within reach of Murchison, what each adds to your trip, how far they are, what they cost and which combinations work best for different travellers. Whether you have four days or two weeks, you will find a route that fits.
Murchison sits in northwestern Uganda, and that position makes it a natural hub. To the south lie Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Budongo and Bugoma forests, and further on the primate forests of Kibale and the savannah of Queen Elizabeth. To the north and east lie the wild landscapes of Kidepo Valley. Choosing the right neighbours turns a good safari into a great one.
At Kenlink Tours, we have built tailor-made Uganda safaris around Murchison Falls since 2010. Below, our team shares the combinations our guests enjoy most and the honest advice we give when helping them choose.
Before choosing neighbours, it helps to know what Murchison itself offers — and what it does not.
For a full introduction to the park, see this guide to Murchison Falls National Park.
This is exactly why combining Murchison with nearby parks is so rewarding: each neighbour fills a gap, and together they create a complete picture of Uganda’s wildlife.
Distance: about 2–3 hours south of Murchison, directly on the Kampala road.
Ziwa is the easiest add-on of all because you pass it anyway. This 70-square-kilometre sanctuary is the only place in Uganda to reliably see rhinos, with about 50 southern white rhinos bred from six founders since 2005. Tracking them on foot with a ranger takes one to two hours and suits all ages. In January 2026, Ziwa sent its first four rhinos to Ajai Wildlife Reserve — a milestone in returning rhinos to the wild.
Adds: rhinos, walking safari, shoebill canoe trips in the Lugogo swamp.
Distance: on the southern edge of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area, about 1–2 hours from Paraa.
Budongo is a vast mahogany forest bordering the park. Its Kaniyo Pabidi and Busingiro areas offer chimpanzee tracking with habituated groups and excellent forest birding, including the Puvel’s illadopsis, found nowhere else in East Africa. It is the quickest way to add chimps to a Murchison trip without driving to Kibale.
Adds: chimpanzees, forest walks, rare forest birds.
Distance: about 3–4 hours south of Murchison, near Hoima, on the route to Kibale.
Bugoma is one of Uganda’s newest chimpanzee tracking destinations and among the most affordable, with permits that have been much cheaper than Kibale’s. It is a good stopover for travellers driving from Murchison towards Fort Portal, and the forest is also home to the endemic Uganda mangabey.
Adds: budget chimp tracking, Uganda mangabeys, a quiet forest experience.
Distance: about 6–7 hours south via Hoima and the Albertine Rift escarpment.
Kibale Forest National Park is Uganda’s premier chimpanzee destination, with around 1,500 chimps and 12 other primate species. Success rates for chimp tracking exceed 90%, and the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary and crater lakes add variety. Our 3 Days Chimp Tracking Safari to Kibale shows what to expect.
Adds: the best chimp tracking in Uganda, crater lakes, tea country.
Distance: about 1–2 hours beyond Fort Portal, so best combined with Kibale.
Semuliki protects a lowland rainforest that is an extension of the Congo Basin. It is famous for the Sempaya hot springs, a boiling female spring and steaming male spring, and for more than 440 bird species, many found nowhere else in East Africa. The neighbouring Toro-Semliki reserve offers savannah walks and Lake Albert views.
Adds: hot springs, Central African birds, off-the-beaten-track exploring.
Distance: 2–3 hours south of Kibale.
Queen Elizabeth National Park adds the Kazinga Channel boat cruise, tree-climbing lions in Ishasha and explosion craters. It complements Murchison perfectly: similar big game, very different scenery. See our 3 Days Queen Elizabeth National Park safari.
Adds: tree-climbing lions, the Kazinga Channel, crater landscapes.
Distance: roughly 8–10 hours northeast by road via Gulu and Kitgum, or a short flight.
Kidepo is Uganda’s most remote and dramatic park, a wide valley ringed by mountains near the South Sudan and Kenya borders. It hosts cheetahs, ostriches, large buffalo herds, lions and many species found nowhere else in Uganda, and it is also a planned future home for rhinos. Visitors are few, so it feels truly wild. Kidepo pairs well with Murchison for travellers with time or a flight budget.
Adds: true wilderness, cheetahs, Karamojong culture.
Distance: 1–2 days’ drive south of Murchison, usually via Kibale and Queen Elizabeth.
For mountain gorillas, you must travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. It is a long way from Murchison, but routed through Kibale and Queen Elizabeth, it becomes the grand tour of Uganda.
Adds: mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, cultural encounters.
Ajai, in West Nile north of Murchison, received its first four rhinos from Ziwa in January 2026, with plans for 20 in total. It is currently closed to tourists while the rhinos settle, but it may become an exciting addition to northern Uganda safaris in the future.
The simplest and most popular combination. Track rhinos at Ziwa on the way north, spend two nights in Murchison for a game drive, the launch cruise and the top of the falls, then return to Kampala. Compare it with the 3 Days Safari to Murchison Falls.
Best for: first-time visitors, short breaks, families with young children.
Add a day for chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest. You get rhinos, big game, the falls and chimps without the long drive to Kibale. For a primate-focused short trip, see our 3-Day Chimpanzee Tracking Safari or the 4 Days Wildlife and Primate Safari.
Best for: travellers with limited time who want both wildlife and primates.
A loop that heads north via Ziwa to Murchison, then south along the Albertine Rift to Kibale for chimp tracking and the crater lakes, before returning to Kampala. It gives you savannah, river and rainforest in under a week, and it avoids the cost of gorilla permits.
Best for: wildlife and primate lovers on a moderate budget.
Extend south from Kibale into Queen Elizabeth for the Kazinga Channel and Ishasha’s tree-climbing lions. Our 7 Days Gorilla and Wildlife Safari can be adapted to include Murchison, and the 7 Days Uganda Safari – One Week Tour follows a similar route.
Best for: big game enthusiasts and photographers.
Continue from Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi for gorilla trekking, ending in Entebbe or Kigali. This is the complete Uganda safari. See our 8-Day Uganda Gorilla, Chimpanzee & Wildlife Safari, 10 Days Uganda Adventure Safari and 10 Days Best of Primate & Culture, or the 10 Days Uganda Primates and Wildlife.
Best for: once-in-a-lifetime travellers who want to see everything.
For a northern adventure, combine Murchison with Kidepo, travelling by road via Gulu or flying one way. Add Ziwa on the way north. This route has very few other visitors and some of Uganda’s most dramatic scenery.
Best for: repeat visitors, photographers and anyone who wants solitude.
Two weeks or more lets you combine Murchison, Kidepo, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi, or add Semuliki and Lake Mburo. Explore our 18-Day Adventure in Uganda, 20-Day Wildlife and Nature Experience and 25-Day Wildlife, Gorilla and Chimps Adventure, or the 14-Day Uganda Primates and Safari Adventure.
Uganda is compact, but roads can be slow, so travel time matters when choosing which parks to combine. These are approximate driving times from Murchison Falls (Paraa area).
| Destination | Approximate drive from Murchison | Main highlight | Ideal extra days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary | 2–3 hours | Rhino tracking on foot | 0 (on the way) |
| Budongo Forest | 1–2 hours | Chimps and forest birds | 1 |
| Bugoma Forest | 3–4 hours | Affordable chimp tracking | 1 |
| Kibale Forest National Park | 6–7 hours | Best chimp tracking in Uganda | 2 |
| Semuliki National Park | 7–8 hours | Hot springs and Congo-basin birds | 1–2 (with Kibale) |
| Queen Elizabeth National Park | 8–9 hours (or 2–3 from Kibale) | Kazinga Channel and tree-climbing lions | 2 |

Based on two travellers sharing a private 4×4 vehicle and mid-range lodges, approximate prices per person are:
| Combination | Duration | Mid-range price per person |
|---|---|---|
| Murchison + Ziwa | 3 days | US$950–US$1,400 |
| Murchison + Ziwa + Budongo | 4–5 days | US$1,300–US$1,900 |
| Murchison + Ziwa + Kibale | 6 days | US$2,000–US$2,900 |

Budget trips cost roughly 20–30% less, and luxury trips can cost twice as much or more. Groups of four or more save significantly because they share vehicle costs; solo travellers can join our group tours or scheduled departure safaris. You can also compare the affordable Uganda wildlife safaris from Pick and Transfer Safaris.
Most of our guests travel in a private 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof and an experienced driver-guide. Our vehicles are also available for self-drive or with a driver through our car hire service. For distant parks like Kidepo or Bwindi, flying one way can save a full day.
Budongo Forest Reserve borders the park and is within the wider Murchison Falls Conservation Area, while Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary sits on the main road two to three hours south. Among national parks, Kibale is the nearest major one, about six to seven hours’ drive away.
Yes. Budongo Forest, on the park’s southern edge, offers chimpanzee tracking with habituated groups. Bugoma Forest, a few hours south, is another affordable option. For the highest success rates and the most primate species, travel on to Kibale.
Not directly. The drive takes eight to nine hours, so most travellers break the journey in Kibale, which sits between the two. This turns a long transfer into an extra highlight.
Yes, but you need at least eight to ten days. Bwindi is in the far southwest, so the usual route travels south through Kibale and Queen Elizabeth before reaching the gorillas. Ending in Kigali saves a long drive back to Entebbe.
Absolutely, if you have time and enjoy remote places. Kidepo offers cheetahs, huge buffalo herds and stunning mountain scenery with very few visitors. Allow at least seven days in total, or fly one way to save time.
Two nights is ideal. It allows the top of the falls, a full game drive, the launch cruise and an optional delta trip or Budongo chimp tracking.

Murchison Falls is the perfect anchor for a Uganda safari, and its neighbours make it even better. Add Ziwa for rhinos, Budongo or Kibale for chimpanzees, Queen Elizabeth for tree-climbing lions, Kidepo for true wilderness or Bwindi for mountain gorillas, and your trip becomes a richer, more complete journey through the Pearl of Africa.
