5 Days Murchison Falls and Kibale National Park

5 Days Murchison Falls and Kibale National Park. Are you planning for a short adventure? Uganda’s diverse landscapes, rich biodiversity, and warm people make it a top destination for safari enthusiasts and nature lovers. A 5-day safari combining Murchison Falls National Park and Kibale National Park offers an unforgettable experience, blending dramatic savannah game drives with intimate encounters with our closest primate relatives. This itinerary is ideal for travelers seeking a balance between classic wildlife viewing (including the Big Five) and immersive rainforest adventures like chimpanzee tracking. From the thunderous power of the mighty Murchison Falls to the tranquil chimp haven in Kibale, every moment is packed with discovery and wonder.

Day 1: Transfer from Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Your safari kicks off with an early morning pick-up from Kampala or Entebbe, beginning your journey northwest toward Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area. Along the way, you’ll make a memorable stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola — the only place in Uganda where you can encounter rhinos in the wild. The sanctuary plays a vital role in rhino conservation and offers a chance to walk safely alongside these majestic creatures.

After lunch, continue your drive to Murchison Falls National Park, arriving in the late afternoon. As you enter the park, expect to be welcomed by stunning savannah landscapes and wildlife sightings. You’ll cross the Nile River on a ferry and head to your lodge for check-in and relaxation. Enjoy dinner with views of the river or savannah as you prepare for the thrilling adventures ahead.

Day 2: Game Drive and Boat Safari to the Bottom of Murchison Falls

Day two begins with an early morning game drive on the northern bank of the park, known for its rich concentration of wildlife. This area is home to lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hyenas, hartebeest, oribis, and Uganda kob. The cool morning hours are ideal for spotting predators before they retreat into the bush.

After a hearty lunch at the lodge, you’ll set off for one of Uganda’s most iconic experiences — a boat safari along the Nile River. This cruise offers up-close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and numerous bird species including the rare shoebill stork. As the boat edges closer to the bottom of Murchison Falls, you’ll witness the incredible power of the Nile as it forces itself through a narrow 7-meter gorge, creating the most powerful waterfall in the world.

Optional: For the adventurous, you can hike to the top of the falls for panoramic views and a dramatic close-up of the thundering waters.

Day 3: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park – The Primate Capital of the World

After breakfast, you’ll depart Murchison Falls and begin your scenic journey south to Kibale Forest National Park, a drive of approximately 6–7 hours. Along the way, you’ll pass through small towns, rural farmlands, and the verdant tea plantations of Fort Portal, one of Uganda’s most picturesque regions.

Upon arrival in Kibale, check in to your lodge, nestled on the edge of the rainforest. Kibale is famous for its incredible biodiversity, especially its primate population. The park is home to 13 primate species, with the main highlight being chimpanzees. Evening at leisure with dinner at the lodge, where you can enjoy the sounds of the jungle.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking and Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary Visit

Rise early for a magical day of chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest. After a briefing at the park headquarters, you’ll be led by experienced guides into the rainforest to locate one of the habituated chimpanzee families. The trek can take between 2 to 4 hours, depending on the movement of the chimps, but the reward is truly special — watching these intelligent creatures feed, groom, and interact in their natural habitat. You may also spot other primates like black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys, along with many bird and butterfly species.

After lunch, take an afternoon guided walk in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run ecotourism project. This swamp walk is a haven for bird watchers, with sightings of the great blue turaco, hornbills, and kingfishers, as well as more primates and plant species. The walk also supports local community conservation efforts.

Day 5: Return to Kampala or Entebbe

On your final day, enjoy a relaxed breakfast before checking out of the lodge. Begin your return journey to Kampala or Entebbe, a scenic 5–6 hour drive with stops for lunch and souvenir shopping along the way. Depending on your schedule, you can opt for a stopover at the equator line in Kasese or Mpigi for photos and a brief cultural experience.

You’ll arrive in Kampala or Entebbe in the afternoon or early evening, marking the end of your 5-day safari — but leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.
