5 Days Pearl of Africa Tour. The 5 Days Pearl of Africa Tour is the ideal short safari for travellers who want to experience Uganda’s two greatest highlights in under a week: thrilling game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park and a once-in-a-lifetime mountain gorilla trek in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
In just five days, you cross the equator, search for tree-climbing lions, cruise past hundreds of hippos on the Kazinga Channel, and spend a magical hour with a habituated gorilla family deep in the rainforest. Along the way, you enjoy the rolling hills, tea plantations, crater lakes and friendly villages that earned Uganda the name the Pearl of Africa.
At Kenlink Tours, our 5-day tour is one of our most popular itineraries for first-time visitors, business travellers with limited time and anyone adding a safari to a wider East Africa trip. This complete guide covers the full day-by-day itinerary, alternative routes, costs, the best time to go, accommodation options, packing tips and frequently asked questions, so you can book with confidence.

Five days is the sweet spot for a first Uganda safari. It gives you enough time for both a classic game drive experience and a gorilla trek, without needing a long holiday.
Queen Elizabeth National Park lies directly on the route to Bwindi, so you can combine the savannah and the rainforest in one smooth loop. You see lions, elephants, buffalo and hippos before trekking with gorillas, which makes the contrast even more memorable. Learn more about the country on our Uganda destination page.
A 5-day tour works well for travellers with a week of leave, business visitors adding a safari after meetings in Kampala, or those combining Uganda with Kenya, Rwanda or Tanzania.
Uganda gorilla permits cost USD 800 for foreign non-residents, compared with USD 1,500 in Rwanda. A 5-day Uganda tour often costs less than a shorter Rwanda gorilla trip, while also including a full wildlife safari.
Unlike rushed three-day gorilla trips, five days lets you enjoy game drives at the best times of day, rest at your lodge and break up the long drives from Entebbe.
Your Kenlink driver-guide picks you up early from your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. Head southwest through Uganda’s green countryside, passing banana plantations, roadside markets and rolling hills. Stop at the equator crossing at Kayabwe for photos and a fun demonstration of how water drains differently in each hemisphere.
Continue through Mbarara, Uganda’s cattle country, famous for long-horned Ankole cows. Lunch is served en route. You arrive at Queen Elizabeth National Park in the late afternoon, in time for a short evening game drive if light allows. Overnight at your lodge.
Meals: Lunch and dinner. Driving time: About 7 to 8 hours.
Rise at dawn for a game drive on the Kasenyi plains, when predators are most active. Look for lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, waterbucks and herds of Uganda kob. Return to the lodge for breakfast and rest.
In the afternoon, enjoy a two-hour boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, which links Lake George and Lake Edward. The channel is home to one of Africa’s highest concentrations of hippos, along with crocodiles, elephants, buffalo and over 60 bird species seen on a typical cruise. Overnight in Queen Elizabeth.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
After breakfast, drive south to the Ishasha sector, famous for its tree-climbing lions. Search the large fig trees where the lions often rest during the day. You may also see topi, buffalo and elephants.
Continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, arriving in the afternoon. Relax at your lodge, enjoy the forest views and prepare your gear for gorilla trekking. Overnight near Bwindi.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
After an early breakfast, transfer to the park office for a ranger briefing. Then set off into the forest with your ranger group to track your assigned gorilla family. Treks take from one hour to six hours or more. Once you find the gorillas, spend one unforgettable hour watching them feed, groom and play.
Return to the lodge to celebrate with your gorilla trekking certificate. In the afternoon, you can join an optional community walk or Batwa cultural experience. Overnight near Bwindi.
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner.
After breakfast, drive back to Kampala or Entebbe, stopping for lunch along the way. Arrive in the evening for your flight or hotel. To save time, you can instead take a scheduled domestic flight from an airstrip near Bwindi to Entebbe.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch. Driving time: About 8 to 10 hours, or around 1 to 2 hours by air.
The classic Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi route is our most popular, but five days can be shaped in several ways depending on your interests and arrival point.
| Route | Main experiences | Best for | Related tour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi | Game drives, boat cruise, gorillas | First-time visitors | 5-Day Wildlife and Gorilla Safari |
| Kibale and Bwindi | Chimpanzees and gorillas | Primate lovers | 5 Days Gorilla and Chimpanzee Tour |
| Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi | Chimps, game drives and gorillas, faster pace | Travellers wanting the most in five days | 5 Days Chimps and Gorilla Safari |
| From Kigali to Uganda | Shorter drives to Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth | Travellers flying into Rwanda | 5-Day Gorilla Trekking Safari from Kigali to Uganda |
| Uganda and Rwanda double gorilla | Gorillas in both countries | Gorilla enthusiasts | 5 Days Uganda Rwanda Double Gorilla Safari |
This version swaps game drives for chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest National Park, the primate capital of the world, before gorilla trekking in Bwindi. It is ideal if primates are your main interest. A similar option is the 5-Day Uganda Gorilla and Chimpanzee Safari.
Kigali, Rwanda, is closer to southern Bwindi than Entebbe, so starting there cuts driving time. Many travellers fly into Kigali, trek gorillas in Bwindi’s Rushaga or Nkuringo sector, enjoy game drives in Queen Elizabeth and return to Kigali. See the 5 Days Uganda Gorilla and Chimps Safari Starting from Rwanda for another Kigali-based route.
If gorillas are not essential, a 5-day route can focus on Murchison Falls National Park, with rhino tracking at Ziwa, game drives, a Nile boat cruise to the falls and chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest.
Our team will recommend the best route for your dates, permit availability and interests.
This short tour packs an impressive variety of wildlife and scenery into five days. Here is what you can look forward to.
Queen Elizabeth hosts around 95 mammal species and over 600 bird species. On game drives and the boat cruise, you may see:
Bwindi protects nearly half of the world’s mountain gorillas. Your trek takes you to a habituated family led by a silverback, with females, juveniles and often playful babies. Watching them up close is the emotional highlight of the trip.
During your trek, you may also spot black-and-white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys and forest birds such as turacos and sunbirds.
The journey itself is a highlight: the equator line, Ankole cattle with giant horns, terraced hills of Kigezi, tea estates and views of the Rwenzori Mountains on clear days. Optional community walks near Bwindi add insight into local life.
Exact inclusions are confirmed in your written quote. For booking, payment and cancellation policies, see our terms and conditions.
The price of the 5-day tour depends mainly on your accommodation level, group size and travel season. The gorilla permit is the largest single cost.
| Permit (per person) | Rate |
|---|---|
| Foreign non-resident | USD 800 |
| Foreign non-resident, low season (April, May, November), reported | USD 600 |
| Foreign resident | USD 700 |
| Rwanda gorilla permit, for comparison | USD 1,500 |
Permit prices are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and can change, so we always confirm the current rate when you book. Foreign non-residents must book permits through a licensed Ugandan tour operator such as Kenlink Tours.
Travel with friends or family to share vehicle costs, consider the low season, or join a scheduled departure. See our scheduled departure safaris and group tours. Contact us for an exact quote based on your dates and preferences.
The tour runs all year, but the dry seasons, June to September and December to February, offer the easiest gorilla trekking and the best game viewing.
In the dry months, trails in Bwindi are firmer and less slippery, roads are easier, and animals in Queen Elizabeth gather around water sources. These are the busiest months, so book three to six months ahead to secure permits and your preferred lodges.
From March to May and in October and November, rain usually falls in afternoon showers. The scenery is lush and green, parks are quieter, and lodge rates may be lower. UWA has reported discounted gorilla permits in April, May and November. Expect muddier trails and pack good rain gear.
| Season | Months | Game drives | Gorilla trekking | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short dry | December to February | Excellent | Very good | Busy |
| Long rains | March to May | Good | Muddy but rewarding | Quiet |
| Long dry | June to September | Excellent | Best | Busiest |
| Short rains | October to November | Good | Moderate | Quiet |
Bwindi is cool and damp at altitude, especially in early mornings, while Queen Elizabeth is warm by day. Pack layers and a rain jacket whatever the month.
You spend two nights in Queen Elizabeth National Park and two nights near Bwindi. Each tour can be built at budget, mid-range or luxury level.
| Night | Location | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Nights 1 and 2 | Queen Elizabeth National Park | Lodges overlooking the savannah, crater lakes or the Kazinga Channel |
| Nights 3 and 4 | Bwindi Impenetrable National Park | Forest lodges close to your gorilla trekking sector |
Bwindi has four trekking sectors, Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, which can be hours apart by road. We always book a lodge close to the sector where your gorilla permit is issued, so trek morning starts calmly rather than with a long, early drive.
On selected itineraries, guests can stay at our own lodge, Honeybee Safari Camp. Ask us whether it fits your route.
Gorilla trekking is the highlight of the tour. A little preparation helps you enjoy every moment.
You should be able to walk for several hours on steep, muddy and uneven terrain at altitude. Treks can last from one to six hours or more. Regular walking or hiking in the weeks before your trip makes a big difference. If you are less confident, tell the rangers at the briefing so they can try to match you with a family closer to the trailhead.
Porters carry your daypack and help you on steep slopes for about USD 15 to 20. Hiring one makes the trek easier and supports local communities around Bwindi.
Turn off your flash and use a higher ISO in the dim forest. Take time to simply watch, too, because the hour passes quickly.
Want to trek twice or add golden monkeys? Consider the 4-Day Rwanda-Uganda Golden Monkey and Gorilla Trekking tour or a stop in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Pack for warm savannah days and cool, wet forest mornings. Soft-sided bags fit best in safari vehicles.
Dark blue and black clothing can attract tsetse flies in some areas, and bright white shows dust quickly. Leave valuable jewellery at home.
If you have a few more days, Uganda offers many rewarding extensions before or after the core tour.
Add two days at the start for chimpanzee tracking in Kibale and the Bigodi Wetland walk. Our 3-Day Chimpanzee Tracking Safari shows what to expect. With Kibale added, the trip becomes our 7 Days Gorilla and Wildlife Safari, or compare the 7 Days Uganda Safari – One Week Tour.
After gorilla trekking, unwind for one or two nights at Lake Bunyonyi, a calm, island-dotted lake near Kabale, perfect for canoeing and relaxing.
Start with three days in the north, tracking rhinos at Ziwa and exploring Murchison Falls. The 3 Days Safari to Murchison Falls can be combined with the 5-day tour for a complete Uganda experience. Explore the full circuit in our 10 Days Uganda Adventure Safari or the 10 Days Uganda Primates and Wildlife.
Cross into Rwanda for golden monkeys, Lake Kivu or a game drive in Akagera. Try the 6-Day Rwanda Adventures – Lake Kivu, our 3-Day Akagera Game Drive Safari, or spend time in Kigali City. See our Rwanda safaris page for more.
Pair your gorilla tour with Kenya’s Masai Mara or Tanzania’s Serengeti. Our 10-Day Gorilla Trekking and Great Migration Safari combines both. Learn more on our Kenya safaris page.

Yes. Five days is enough to enjoy game drives and a boat cruise in Queen Elizabeth National Park and a gorilla trek in Bwindi. Longer trips let you add chimpanzees, Murchison Falls or relaxing lake stays.
The classic tour starts and ends in Entebbe or Kampala. We can also start in Kigali, Rwanda, which is closer to southern Bwindi.
Yes. One gorilla permit per person is included in the standard package. We book it for you through the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
The drives from Entebbe to Queen Elizabeth and from Bwindi back to Entebbe take about seven to ten hours each. A domestic flight on the final day can shorten the return journey.
The Ishasha sector is one of the best places in Africa to see tree-climbing lions, and sightings are frequent, though never guaranteed.
Gorilla trekkers must be at least 15 years old. Younger children can join game drives and boat cruises.
Absolutely. Every Kenlink tour is private and can be adjusted for lodge level, start point, activities and extra days.
June to September and December to February offer the best conditions, but the tour runs year-round. The wet seasons bring greener scenery, fewer visitors and possible permit discounts.
Most visitors need a Uganda visa applied for online before travel. If visiting Rwanda or Kenya too, the East Africa Tourist Visa covers all three.
A yellow fever certificate is required to enter Uganda. Consult a travel clinic about malaria prevention and other recommended vaccines.
The 5 Days Pearl of Africa Tour proves you do not need weeks to experience the magic of Uganda. In under a week, you cross the equator, watch lions and elephants on the savannah, cruise among hippos on the Kazinga Channel and stand face to face with mountain gorillas in one of the world’s oldest rainforests.
It is a short trip with a lifetime of memories, and the perfect introduction to a country many travellers come back to again and again.
Short on time? You can also consider the 4 Days Wildlife and Primate Safari or the 3 Days Safari to Queen Elizabeth National Park. For gorillas only, our 3-Day Uganda Gorillas Safari is ideal. Browse all our safaris on the Kenlink Tours homepage.
Gorilla permits and the best lodges book up quickly, especially in the dry seasons. Secure your dates early and let our team design a smooth, private 5-day safari around your plans.
