Step One: Securing Your Gorilla Permit

The journey begins long before you set foot in the forest. In Uganda, permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), while in Rwanda they are managed through the Rwanda Development Board. Permits allow you to spend exactly one hour with a habituated gorilla family.

Demand is high year-round, so booking your permit months in advance is essential. Step Two: Arriving at the Park Headquarters

On the morning of your trek, you will arrive at the park headquarters — typically at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, or Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda — by around 7:00 to 7:30 AM. The atmosphere at this point is electric. Trekkers from around the world gather, buzzing with quiet anticipation.

After registration, rangers divide visitors into groups of no more than eight people — this is a firm rule set by conservation authorities to minimise stress on the gorilla families. Each group is then assigned to a specific habituated gorilla family. Some families reside relatively close to the trailhead; others require a more demanding hike through steep, dense forest. You won’t know in advance exactly how long your trek will be, which adds to the adventure.

Step Three: The Pre-Trek Briefing

Before setting off, a senior ranger or park guide delivers a detailed briefing covering the rules of engagement. This is not something to zone out during — the regulations exist for the safety of both the gorillas and the trekkers.

Key rules you will hear include: maintain a minimum distance of seven metres from the gorillas at all times (though in practice, the gorillas don’t always cooperate), limit your visit to exactly sixty minutes, switch off camera flashes, lower your voice, and if a gorilla charges or approaches, follow the guide’s instructions calmly and do not run. Eating, drinking, and smoking are prohibited in the presence of the animals. Mountain gorillas share around 98% of human DNA according to the WWF, which makes them highly susceptible to human diseases — another reason masks are often required and sick trekkers are discouraged from proceeding.

Step Four: The Trek Through the Forest

Then, finally, you walk. Armed rangers lead the group through the forest, staying in radio contact with trackers who set off ahead of dawn to locate the gorilla family’s overnight nest site and follow their morning movements. You will likely be using this information in real time — the trackers radio in updates, and your guide adjusts the route accordingly.

The terrain can range from gentle slopes along well-worn paths to steep, muddy scrambles through dense vegetation. Rain gear, sturdy boots, and gaiters are highly recommended. The forest itself is spectacular — ancient trees draped in moss, the calls of rare birds, occasional glimpses of other primates in the canopy. Treks can last anywhere from thirty minutes to six or seven hours, depending on where the gorillas have wandered. The rangers carry machetes to cut a path when needed. You may not even notice the exhaustion — the anticipation keeps adrenaline flowing.

Step Five: The Encounter — One Hour with the Giants

When your guide holds up a hand and points silently into the trees, your heart will stop. The gorillas are there.

Habituated gorilla families have been gradually accustomed to human presence over years of carefully managed exposure, meaning they largely ignore you. What unfolds in that hour is deeply intimate. You may watch a silverback — the dominant male — resting on his back, belly exposed, utterly relaxed. Young gorillas wrestle and chase each other between the vegetation. Mothers carry infants. Adolescents forage for wild celery and bamboo. Occasionally, a curious juvenile will wander alarmingly close, and your guide will simply hiss softly to redirect it.

Photography is permitted and encouraged (without flash), and most travellers report that they forget to take photos entirely because they simply cannot look away. When the hour is up, your guide will lead you back through the forest. Most trekkers report a strange mix of euphoria and sadness as they leave. Back at the trailhead or headquarters, you are presented with an official gorilla trekking certificate — a memento most trekkers frame and keep for life.
