What happens during a gorilla trekking experience. Few wildlife encounters on Earth can rival the raw emotion of standing face to face with a mountain gorilla in the wild. There is something deeply humbling about locking eyes with an animal so remarkably close to us in DNA, watching a silverback yawn or a baby gorilla tumble through the undergrowth just metres away. If you are dreaming of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, a gorilla trek is it — and East Africa is where it happens.
At Kenlink Tours, we have been guiding travellers into gorilla territory since 2010, and we can tell you with confidence: nothing quite prepares you for the moment. But understanding what the experience involves — from the first briefing to the final certificate — will help you prepare, set expectations, and make the most of every extraordinary minute.
The journey begins long before you set foot in the forest. Gorilla trekking is strictly regulated to protect the animals and control visitor impact, which means you must hold a valid gorilla permit before you trek. In Uganda, permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), while in Rwanda they are managed through the Rwanda Development Board. Permits allow you to spend exactly one hour with a habituated gorilla family.
Demand is high year-round, so booking your permit months in advance is essential. When you travel with us, we handle all permit logistics as part of your package — whether you choose our 3-Day Uganda Gorilla Safari, our 5-Day Gorilla Trekking Safari from Kigali to Uganda, or one of our longer Uganda Safaris.
On the morning of your trek, you will arrive at the park headquarters — typically at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, or Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda — by around 7:00 to 7:30 AM. The atmosphere at this point is electric. Trekkers from around the world gather, buzzing with quiet anticipation.
After registration, rangers divide visitors into groups of no more than eight people — this is a firm rule set by conservation authorities to minimise stress on the gorilla families. Each group is then assigned to a specific habituated gorilla family. Some families reside relatively close to the trailhead; others require a more demanding hike through steep, dense forest. You won’t know in advance exactly how long your trek will be, which adds to the adventure.
Before setting off, a senior ranger or park guide delivers a detailed briefing covering the rules of engagement. This is not something to zone out during — the regulations exist for the safety of both the gorillas and the trekkers.
Key rules you will hear include: maintain a minimum distance of seven metres from the gorillas at all times (though in practice, the gorillas don’t always cooperate), limit your visit to exactly sixty minutes, switch off camera flashes, lower your voice, and if a gorilla charges or approaches, follow the guide’s instructions calmly and do not run. Eating, drinking, and smoking are prohibited in the presence of the animals. Mountain gorillas share around 98% of human DNA according to the WWF, which makes them highly susceptible to human diseases — another reason masks are often required and sick trekkers are discouraged from proceeding.
If you are exploring options in Rwanda, our 4-Day Rwanda-Uganda Golden Monkey and Gorilla Trekking itinerary provides a brilliant two-country primate adventure with full briefings and expert guides at both ends.
Then, finally, you walk. Armed rangers lead the group through the forest, staying in radio contact with trackers who set off ahead of dawn to locate the gorilla family’s overnight nest site and follow their morning movements. You will likely be using this information in real time — the trackers radio in updates, and your guide adjusts the route accordingly.
The terrain can range from gentle slopes along well-worn paths to steep, muddy scrambles through dense vegetation. Rain gear, sturdy boots, and gaiters are highly recommended. The forest itself is spectacular — ancient trees draped in moss, the calls of rare birds, occasional glimpses of other primates in the canopy. Uganda is home to over 1,000 bird species, and birdwatchers in particular can experience the magic of the forest even before the main event. Our 7-Day Birdwatching Safari in Uganda pairs beautifully with a gorilla trek for wildlife enthusiasts who want the full forest experience.
Treks can last anywhere from thirty minutes to six or seven hours, depending on where the gorillas have wandered. The rangers carry machetes to cut a path when needed. You may not even notice the exhaustion — the anticipation keeps adrenaline flowing.
When your guide holds up a hand and points silently into the trees, your heart will stop. The gorillas are there.
Habituated gorilla families have been gradually accustomed to human presence over years of carefully managed exposure, meaning they largely ignore you. What unfolds in that hour is deeply intimate. You may watch a silverback — the dominant male — resting on his back, belly exposed, utterly relaxed. Young gorillas wrestle and chase each other between the vegetation. Mothers carry infants. Adolescents forage for wild celery and bamboo. Occasionally, a curious juvenile will wander alarmingly close, and your guide will simply hiss softly to redirect it.
Photography is permitted and encouraged (without flash), and most travellers report that they forget to take photos entirely because they simply cannot look away. The IUCN lists mountain gorillas as Endangered on their Red List, with only around 1,000 individuals remaining in the wild — all of them in the Virunga Massif and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Being in their presence carries a weight that is difficult to put into words.
For those wishing to combine this experience with chimpanzee tracking, our 5 Days Gorilla & Chimpanzee Tracking Tour and 7-Day Wildlife, Gorillas and Chimpanzees Safari offer two primate encounters in one unforgettable trip.
When the hour is up, your guide will lead you back through the forest. Most trekkers report a strange mix of euphoria and sadness as they leave. Back at the trailhead or headquarters, you are presented with an official gorilla trekking certificate — a memento most trekkers frame and keep for life.
The rest of the day is yours to reflect, debrief over a packed lunch in the forest, and begin processing what just happened. Many travellers combine their gorilla experience with other activities: boat cruises, cultural village visits, or game drives. Our 5-Day Wildlife & Gorilla Safari and 7-Day Gorilla and Wildlife Safari are designed exactly for this — building the gorilla trek into a broader East African adventure.
Mountain gorillas exist in only two locations in the world: the Virunga Massif, which spans Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. Kenlink Tours operates in both Uganda and Rwanda to give you maximum flexibility.
In Uganda, our treks are based in Bwindi and Mgahinga. Our Gorilla Trekking Adventures page gives a full overview. For Rwanda, the starting point is Volcanoes National Park — a shorter trek overall but equally breathtaking. Our 6-Day Rwanda Adventures: Great Apes & Lake Kivu combines the gorilla trek with Rwanda’s stunning landscapes and Lake Kivu.
If you are travelling from Kigali and want the best of both countries, our 10-Day Fantastic Tour in Rwanda & Uganda is one of our most popular cross-border itineraries.
Gorilla trekking is available year-round, but the dry seasons — June to September and December to February — are generally easier for trekking due to firmer trails and clearer skies. That said, the forest is verdant and photogenic even in the wetter months, and permits are easier to secure. Our Rwanda Safaris page and About Uganda destination guide both provide detailed seasonal advice to help you time your trip perfectly.
Gorilla trekking is not just a trip — it is a contribution. A portion of every permit fee directly funds gorilla conservation and local community programes. At Kenlink Tours, we go further: 30% of our tour profits support community initiatives including over 294 orphans in Kisoro district.
