Private Transfer by car from Kigali to Nkuringo Bwindi. Nkuringo is one of the most spectacular corners of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Perched on a ridge in the park’s southwestern corner, it offers breathtaking views over the Kashasha valley and, on clear days, the Virunga volcanoes rising across the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. It is also one of Bwindi’s most rewarding and challenging gorilla trekking sectors, loved by adventurous travellers and photographers.
For travellers flying into Kigali, Nkuringo is surprisingly close. A private transfer by car from Kigali to Nkuringo takes about four to five hours, making it one of the most accessible Bwindi sectors from Rwanda. With your own vehicle and an experienced driver-guide, the journey is comfortable, scenic and stress-free, and you arrive in time to rest before your trek.
This guide covers everything you need to know about a private transfer from Kigali to Nkuringo: the route through Musanze and the Cyanika border, travel times, vehicles, costs, border and visa requirements, where to stay, trekking tips, and how to combine your trip with Lake Mutanda, Mgahinga and more. At Kenlink Tours, we drive this route every week, and the advice below comes directly from our drivers’ experience.
Nkuringo lies in Kisoro District in the southwestern part of Bwindi, at an altitude of around 2,100 metres. It sits on a high ridge overlooking the forest on one side and farmland and volcanoes on the other, giving it some of the best views of any gorilla trekking area in Africa.
The sector opened for gorilla trekking in 2004 with the Nkuringo gorilla family, and today it has several habituated families, including the Nkuringo group, Bushaho and Christmas families. Trekking here usually begins with a steep descent from the ridge into the forest valley, and the return climb can be demanding. For fit travellers, however, the scenery and the sense of adventure make Nkuringo one of Bwindi’s most memorable sectors.
Read our guide to gorilla trekking in the Nkuringo sector and our comparison of Rushaga or Nkuringo: which is better?. Pick and Transfer Safaris compares all four sectors in their guide to Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga and Ruhija gorilla trekking.
Approximate travel times by private car are:
Total journey time: about 4 to 5 hours, depending on border formalities, stops and road conditions.
This makes Nkuringo roughly as close to Kigali as Rushaga, and much closer than Buhoma or Ruhija. By comparison, driving from Kampala or Entebbe to Nkuringo takes around 8 to 10 hours. Pick and Transfer Safaris explains how many hours it takes to drive from Kigali to Bwindi, and our guide compares travel time and cost from Kigali vs Kampala to Bwindi.
Step 1: Kigali to Musanze. Leave Kigali on Rwanda’s smooth tarmac roads and head northwest through the country’s famous terraced hills. After about two hours, you reach Musanze (Ruhengeri), the gateway town to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, with the Virunga volcanoes towering ahead.
Step 2: Musanze to the Cyanika border. Continue north for 30 to 45 minutes to the Cyanika border post, passing volcanic farmland and small villages.
Step 3: Border crossing. Exit Rwanda and enter Uganda at Cyanika. Formalities usually take 30 to 60 minutes when your documents are in order, and your driver-guide will assist you.
Step 4: Cyanika to Kisoro. A short drive brings you to Kisoro, a small, friendly town at the foot of the Virungas. It is a good place for lunch, a coffee or to pick up supplies.
Step 5: Kisoro to Nkuringo. The final stretch climbs from Kisoro through hills and villages to the Nkuringo ridge. Parts of this road are unpaved, winding and steep, but the views of Lake Mutanda, the volcanoes and the terraced hills are spectacular.
The Cyanika border is the best crossing for Nkuringo. The alternative Katuna border, via Kabale, is longer for this sector. Pick and Transfer Safaris explains whether you can go to Bwindi through the Cyanika border from Kigali and describes crossing from Rwanda to Uganda through Cyanika. See also our guide to which border points to cross from Kigali to Bwindi or Mgahinga.
Public transport between Kigali and Nkuringo involves several changes and does not reach the lodges, so a private transfer is far more practical for gorilla trekkers. See Pick and Transfer Safaris’ guide to transport from Kigali to Bwindi National Park and their Kigali to Nkuringo gorilla trekking page.
A typical private transfer from Kigali to Nkuringo includes:
Many travellers also book the return transfer, or keep the vehicle and driver for the whole trip, including onward travel to Lake Mutanda, Mgahinga or Queen Elizabeth National Park. Visas, gorilla permits, accommodation, meals and tips are usually not included. See our guides to seamless transfers from Kigali to Bwindi and Mgahinga and companies offering transfers from Kigali to Bwindi or Mgahinga, and Pick and Transfer Safaris’ Kigali transfers to Bwindi National Park.
Although the request is often for a transfer “by car”, the right vehicle matters for Nkuringo because the final stretch from Kisoro is steep and partly unpaved.
We recommend a 4×4 vehicle or high-clearance SUV for all Nkuringo transfers.
Costs depend on:

The drive from Kigali to Nkuringo is one of the most scenic transfers in the region:
Pick and Transfer Safaris describes the journey in their guide to driving from Kigali to Bwindi for a gorilla trek.
Most travellers start their Nkuringo transfer at Kigali International Airport. If your flight lands in the morning, you can drive straight to Nkuringo the same day and arrive before dark. If you land in the afternoon or evening, we recommend spending the night in Kigali or Musanze and continuing the next morning, so you avoid driving the steep, unpaved Kisoro to Nkuringo road after dark.
Remember that your gorilla trek must take place on the date and in the sector printed on your permit. If your international flight is long or connections are tight, build in a buffer day before your trek. Pick and Transfer Safaris offers airport transfers in Kigali and Entebbe for travellers who need a pickup on arrival.
On a private transfer, your driver-guide is your companion for the whole journey. A good driver-guide will:
Keeping the same driver-guide throughout your trip makes everything smoother, especially when crossing borders and moving between parks.
Rwanda’s roads from Kigali to Musanze and the Cyanika border are excellent tarmac, with strictly enforced speed limits. On the Ugandan side, the road from Cyanika to Kisoro is also tarmac. The final section from Kisoro up to Nkuringo is the most challenging part of the journey: it is narrow, winding, steep in places and partly unpaved, and it can become muddy and slippery after rain.
For safety, choose an operator that uses well-maintained 4×4 vehicles, experienced drivers who know the Nkuringo road, and a policy of avoiding driving on unpaved sections after dark. Seat belts, first-aid kits and mobile communication should be standard.
Because private transfers are priced per vehicle, they offer excellent value for couples, families and groups. A standard Land Cruiser carries up to six passengers with luggage, and larger groups can travel in two vehicles.
Families should note that the minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years. Younger children can enjoy community walks, crafts and nature trails with a supervising adult while older family members trek. Nkuringo’s steep terrain means families should consider fitness carefully, and some prefer Rushaga for slightly easier treks.
Both Nkuringo and Rushaga are in southern Bwindi and are roughly the same distance from Kigali. The main differences are:
Choose Nkuringo for scenery and adventure, or Rushaga for flexibility and permit availability. Your transfer route from Kigali is similar for both, via Cyanika and Kisoro.
You do not have to return to Kigali after trekking in Nkuringo. Many travellers continue north to Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and the Kazinga Channel cruise, then on to Kibale Forest for chimpanzees, before finishing at Entebbe International Airport. Alternatively, Kisoro airstrip, about an hour from Nkuringo, has domestic flights to Entebbe. See our guide to getting from Kisoro airport to Bwindi and our guide to getting to Bwindi from Kisoro.
Nkuringo offers a small but excellent range of lodges, many with spectacular views of the volcanoes and the forest:
See our guide to the Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, our overview of lodges in Bwindi National Park and our list of the top gorilla lodges in Bwindi.
Some travellers stay in Kisoro town or at Lake Mutanda and drive to Nkuringo early on trekking morning. This works, but requires a very early start. Pick and Transfer Safaris explains whether you can sleep in Kisoro and trek gorillas in Bwindi.
Because Nkuringo is four to five hours from Kigali, you have two options:
For most travellers, we strongly recommend arriving the day before. See our guide to gorilla trekking in Bwindi’s Nkuringo sector starting in Kigali.
Nkuringo is home to several habituated gorilla families, each with its own character:
Families move through the forest daily, so trek length varies. Rangers allocate visitors to families at the morning briefing, taking fitness into account where possible.
If Nkuringo’s lodges are fully booked, or you want a lakeside setting, consider staying at Lake Mutanda or in Kisoro town and driving to Nkuringo on trekking morning.
Staying outside Nkuringo means an earlier start on trekking day, usually leaving around 5:30 to 6:00 a.m. to reach the 7:30 a.m. briefing. Pick and Transfer Safaris lists hotels in Kisoro town for travellers who prefer to stay there.
Some travellers consider hiring a car and driving themselves to Nkuringo. While self-drive is possible, a private transfer with a driver-guide is usually the better option:
On trekking morning, your driver-guide takes you to the Nkuringo park office for a briefing at around 7:30 a.m. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers explain the rules and assign visitors to gorilla families in groups of up to eight people.
Treks in Nkuringo usually start with a steep descent from the ridge through farmland into the forest. The gorillas may be close to the forest edge or deep in the valley, so the trek can last from one hour to most of the day. The return climb back up to the ridge is the most demanding part, so pace yourself, carry water and hire a porter.
Once you find the gorillas, you spend one unforgettable hour watching them feed, groom and play. Afterwards, you receive your gorilla trekking certificate and return to your lodge.
Nkuringo has fewer gorilla families than Rushaga, so permits can sell out quickly, especially in peak season. Book your permit first, then arrange your transfer and lodge. Our guide on how to book a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda explains the process.
Day 1: Kigali to Nkuringo. Pickup in Kigali, drive via Musanze and the Cyanika border to Kisoro, then up to Nkuringo. Enjoy sunset views over the volcanoes.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking. Morning briefing and trek to meet a gorilla family. Relax at your lodge or take a community walk in the afternoon.
Day 3: Nkuringo to Kigali. Drive back to Kigali, with an optional stop at Lake Mutanda or in Musanze.

About 4 to 5 hours by private car, via Musanze, the Cyanika border and Kisoro.
The Cyanika border, about 30 to 45 minutes north of Musanze.
It is possible with a very early start, but Nkuringo’s steep terrain makes it tiring. We recommend arriving the day before.
A 4×4 or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended because the final road from Kisoro is steep and partly unpaved.
It is one of Bwindi’s more challenging sectors, with a steep descent and climb back to the ridge. Good preparation and a porter make a big difference.
Yes. Lake Mutanda and Mgahinga are both close to Nkuringo and Kisoro, making them easy add-ons.
A private transfer by car from Kigali to Nkuringo is the easiest and most comfortable way to reach one of Bwindi’s most spectacular gorilla trekking sectors. In just four to five hours, you travel from Rwanda’s capital through the Virunga volcanoes to the Nkuringo ridge, ready for an unforgettable encounter with mountain gorillas.
To make the most of your trip, book your gorilla permit first, plan to arrive the day before your trek, choose a 4×4 vehicle for the final climb from Kisoro, and consider adding Lake Mutanda or Mgahinga’s golden monkeys to your journey. With the right planning, the road to Nkuringo becomes one of the highlights of your safari.
