Ngabwe Trail – The Ngabwe Trail is one of the many hiking paths that wind through the lush and diverse landscape of Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda. This trail offers an exceptional experience for hikers seeking to explore a variety of vegetation zones in a relatively short distance. The Ngabwe Trail is considered moderately difficult in terms of its terrain and elevation changes. It’s an accessible trail for most hikers, even those with moderate fitness levels. The path can be extended to a longer, more challenging trek of up to 8 hours by incorporating the Kitabi tea plantation into the hike. This extension offers an opportunity to experience more of the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Among the most common sightings are colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s silver monkeys, and mangabeys. These primates add an exciting element to the hike, as they can often be observed swinging through the trees or foraging in the undergrowth.

In addition to the various monkey species, the trail also offers the chance to spot chimpanzees, a rare and thrilling experience. Although not guaranteed, encountering these intelligent creatures in their natural habitat can be a highlight of the hike.

Flora and Vegetation Zones

This diversity provides a constantly changing backdrop and keeps the hike engaging.

Conservation and Ecotourism

As part of Nyungwe Forest National Park, the Ngabwe Trail is an important component of the region’s conservation and ecotourism efforts. The park is known for its commitment to preserving its unique ecosystems and protecting the wildlife that calls it home.
