Birds found in Mgahinga National Park

Birds found in Mgahinga National Park. Nestled in the far southwestern corner of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a compact yet biodiverse gem. Though best known for its gorilla and golden monkey trekking experiences, Mgahinga is also a top birding destination, especially for travelers seeking the rare and beautiful species of the Albertine Rift. Its varied ecosystems—from bamboo forests to alpine meadows and volcanic slopes—make it a hotspot for bird diversity.

Whether you’re a seasoned birder or simply a lover of nature, Mgahinga offers a tranquil, off-the-beaten-path birding experience combined with the thrill of mountain gorilla tracking.

About Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga is the smallest of Uganda’s national parks, covering just 33.7 square kilometers, but it is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which spans Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park protects the Ugandan portion of the majestic Virunga Volcanoes, including Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Sabinyo. Mgahinga is primarily made up of afro-montane forests, bamboo zones, and high-altitude moorlands, providing rich habitats for birds, primates, and other wildlife.

Bird Species in Mgahinga National Park

Mgahinga is home to over 180 bird species, including several Albertine Rift Endemics—birds that are found only in the mountainous regions of the Albertine Rift. This makes the park especially appealing for avid birders seeking rare and localized species.

Notable Bird Species Include:

  • Rwenzori Turaco – A colorful, fruit-eating bird with a vibrant red crest and green plumage, endemic to the Albertine Rift.

  • Dusky Turtle Dove

  • Blue-headed Sunbird

  • Kivu Ground Thrush

  • Olive Pigeon

  • White-starred Robin

  • Red-faced Woodland Warbler

  • White-tailed Blue Flycatcher

  • Yellow-crowned Canary

  • Striped-breasted Tit

  • Black Kite

  • Grey-crowned Crane (Uganda’s national bird)

  • Black-headed Waxbill

  • Lagden’s Bush-Shrike

The park’s montane forest and bamboo vegetation are especially rich in birdlife, and many of these birds are most active in the early morning.

Combining Birding with Gorilla Trekking

One of Mgahinga’s biggest draws is the opportunity to combine birdwatching with gorilla trekking. The park is home to the Nyakagezi gorilla family, a habituated group that can be visited on daily gorilla tracking expeditions. While trekking in search of gorillas, visitors also have the chance to spot numerous forest birds along the way. The dual experience of seeing rare birds and mountain gorillas in one trip is what makes Mgahinga uniquely appealing.

Additionally, golden monkey trekking, another primate-focused activity, offers birders more chances to see forest species in their natural habitat.

Other Activities in Mgahinga

Aside from birdwatching and primate trekking, Mgahinga offers several other exciting activities that complement a nature-focused visit:

1. Volcano Hiking:

Hike one of the three extinct volcanoes—Mount Sabinyo, Mount Muhabura, or Mount Gahinga—for spectacular views and a high-altitude birding experience. Mount Sabinyo, in particular, allows you to stand in three countries (Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo) at once.

2. Batwa Cultural Trail:

The Batwa Trail offers an insightful journey into the culture of the Batwa pygmies, the original forest dwellers. The trail includes storytelling, traditional dances, and a walk through caves once used by the Batwa.

3. Nature Walks:

Guided nature walks through the bamboo zone, montane forest, and wetland areas offer more birdwatching opportunities, as well as encounters with butterflies, plants, and small mammals.

When to Visit Mgahinga for Birding

The best time for birdwatching in Mgahinga is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, when forest trails are more accessible, and birds are more active. However, birding is possible year-round, especially for Albertine Rift Endemics, which are resident and do not migrate.

The wet seasons (March–May and October–November) bring lush vegetation and are ideal for photographers due to the beautiful green backdrops, though some trails may be slippery and difficult to navigate.

Where to Stay Near Mgahinga

Though the park is small, there are several excellent accommodation options nearby catering to different budgets:

This upscale lodge offers beautiful bandas with private verandas, locally inspired décor, and excellent views of the volcanoes. It’s ideal for travelers looking for comfort and personalized service.

2. Traveler’s Rest Hotel (Mid-Range)

3. Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp (Budget)

This community-run camp is located just outside the park gate and is perfect for budget travelers. It supports local initiatives and offers a simple but authentic experience close to nature.
