Driving from Bwindi to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Embarking on a journey from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers more than just a transfer between two gorilla trekking destinations—it’s a breathtaking experience that showcases the scenic beauty of southwestern Uganda. Whether you’re a nature lover, an adventure seeker, or a wildlife enthusiast, this trip is both thrilling and enriching.
In this blog, we share everything you need to know about the drive, the unique experiences of gorilla trekking in each park, the best time to visit, how to get your gorilla trekking permits through Kenlink Tours, and where to stay during your adventure.
The drive from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park covers approximately 80 to 100 kilometers, depending on your starting point within Bwindi. The journey typically takes 2 to 4 hours, navigating winding mountain roads and passing through rolling hills, local villages, terraced farms, and lush forests.
If you’re coming from the southern sector of Bwindi—like Rushaga or Nkuringo—the drive is shorter and more direct. From Buhoma or Ruhija in the northern and eastern sections, the drive takes a bit longer and may require going through Kisoro town. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended due to the mountainous terrain and possible muddy patches, especially during the rainy season.
On your safari to these destinations you are guaranteed a smooth, guided, and comfortable transfer with professional drivers who know the routes well and can enrich your journey with local insights.
Both Bwindi and Mgahinga offer unforgettable gorilla trekking experiences, but there are some key differences worth noting:
Home to over 20 habituated gorilla families, Bwindi offers multiple trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.
The forest is dense, ancient, and UNESCO-listed, providing an intense jungle trekking experience.
Hikes can be challenging due to the thick vegetation and steep terrain.
Known for offering both gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation experiences (up to 4 hours with a gorilla family).
Smaller and part of the Virunga volcanic range, Mgahinga is home to one main habituated gorilla family—the Nyakagezi group—known for being stable and easy to track.
The terrain is more open compared to Bwindi, with bamboo forests and volcanic slopes.
Trekking in Mgahinga offers the added bonus of scenic views of the Virunga Volcanoes and the chance to encounter golden monkeys, which are endemic to the area.
Cultural experiences with the Batwa people, the original forest dwellers, are more accessible in Mgahinga.
If time allows, combining treks in both parks offers a well-rounded gorilla adventure and the opportunity to appreciate the behavioral and environmental differences between gorilla families.
The best time for gorilla trekking in both Bwindi and Mgahinga is during the dry seasons:
June to September: The longest dry season, ideal for trekking with clearer trails and more predictable weather.
December to February: A shorter dry spell with good visibility and easier hikes.
Although trekking is possible all year round, the wet seasons (March to May and October to November) can make trails muddy and more challenging. However, permits are sometimes easier to obtain during the wet months, and the forests are incredibly lush and green.
Gorilla trekking permits are required for both Bwindi and Mgahinga, and each costs $800 per person for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.
Check availability and reserve your permits well in advance.
Handle the payment and registration with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Talk to our Tour Consultants to help you on this.
Provide guidance on trekking logistics, including briefing locations, start times, and what to expect.
Ensure timely pickup and drop-off for your gorilla trekking day.
We recommend booking at least 3 to 6 months in advance, especially during peak seasons, to secure your preferred dates.
