How to book a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda. Uganda is one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations on earth, and at the heart of that magic is a single, life-changing encounter — coming face to face with a mountain gorilla in the wild. Home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, Uganda offers a trekking experience unlike anything else in Africa. But before you can step into the ancient rainforest, there is one non-negotiable step: securing your gorilla trekking permit. This guide walks you through everything you need to know, from the permit cost to the booking process, so your dream safari becomes a reality.
Uganda has earned its place as the world’s premier gorilla trekking destination for good reason. The country is home to two gorilla trekking sites — Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park — both of which protect habituated gorilla families that have grown accustomed to human presence. If you want to explore more about the destination before you book, our Uganda destination page gives you a rich overview of everything the Pearl of Africa has to offer.
Compared to Rwanda, Uganda’s gorilla permit is significantly more affordable, making it accessible to a wider range of travellers. Beyond the gorillas, a Uganda safari opens the door to chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions, shoebill storks, and some of the most dramatic landscapes in East Africa. At Kenlink Tours, we have been crafting gorilla safaris since 2010, and we know how to make every detail count.
A gorilla trekking permit is an official entry pass that grants you exactly one hour with a habituated gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Every visitor who wishes to trek gorillas in Uganda must hold a valid permit — no exceptions. The permits are issued and regulated by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the government body responsible for managing all of Uganda’s national parks and protected areas.
Only eight visitors per gorilla group are allowed per day, per trek. This strict limit is not just a tourism regulation — it is a conservation measure designed to protect the gorillas from disease transmission and stress. The revenue generated from permit sales goes directly toward gorilla conservation, anti-poaching patrols, and community development around the national parks.
As of 2024, a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs USD 800 per person. This fee covers the park entrance for the day, ranger guide fees, and the one-hour gorilla encounter itself. It does not cover accommodation, transportation, or any other safari activities.
While USD 800 may seem like a significant investment, it is considerably less than the USD 1,500 charged in Rwanda for an equivalent experience. Uganda remains the most cost-effective option in the world for mountain gorilla trekking without any compromise on the quality of the encounter.
If you are on a tight budget, we recommend combining your gorilla trek with other activities in Uganda to get the most value from your trip. Our 7-Day Wildlife and Gorilla Safari and 3-Day Uganda Gorillas Safari are designed to maximise your experience at every price point.
There are two main ways to book a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda:
You can book directly on the Uganda Wildlife Authority website using their online reservation system. You will need to create an account, select your preferred trek date, gorilla group, and sector (for Bwindi, there are four sectors: Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, and Nkuringo), and complete payment via credit card. UWA accepts all major cards.
This route works well if you are an independent traveller who is confident managing all logistics on your own. However, it places the full weight of planning — transport, accommodation, and park logistics — entirely on you.
The most seamless and stress-free way to secure your gorilla permit is through a trusted, licensed tour operator like Kenlink Tours. When you book through us, we handle the permit reservation on your behalf, coordinate with UWA, arrange your accommodation near the park, provide 4×4 transport from Kampala or Entebbe, and pair your gorilla trek with other incredible Uganda experiences.
We offer a full range of Uganda Safaris that include pre-booked gorilla permits, so you never have to worry about missing out due to availability. This is especially important because permits can sell out months in advance, particularly during peak season.
Permits should be booked at least three to six months in advance, and ideally even earlier for travel during peak seasons. The two peak periods for gorilla trekking in Uganda are:
During these months, forest trails are drier and more navigable, and the gorillas tend to stay lower on the hillsides, making encounters easier. However, these months are also the most popular, meaning permits sell out fastest. Our scheduled departure safaris are a great option if you want to join a fixed-date group with permits already secured.
The low season (March to May and October to November) is also worth considering. The forest is lush and green, birdlife is spectacular, and permit availability is much better. We offer discounted packages during this period — contact us to find out about current low-season deals.
Here is a simple breakdown of how booking a gorilla permit through Kenlink Tours works:
Step 1 — Reach out to us. Contact our team through our enquiry form or WhatsApp with your preferred travel dates and group size. We will confirm permit availability with UWA immediately.
Step 2 — Choose your trek date and sector. We will guide you on which Bwindi sector best suits your fitness level, interests, and accommodation preference. Buhoma in the north is most popular for short visits; Rushaga in the south has the highest number of habituated gorilla groups.
Step 3 — Select your safari package. From a short 3-day gorilla safari to extended trips like our 7-Day Wildlife and Primate Safari or the comprehensive 25-Day Uganda Adventure, we will tailor your itinerary around the permit date.
Step 4 — Pay and confirm. A deposit secures your permit and accommodation. We issue a booking confirmation and provide you with a full pre-trip briefing document.
Step 5 — Travel. We arrange airport pickup, 4×4 transport, and all park logistics. On trek day, your UWA ranger guide will lead you to the gorilla family. Your one hour in the presence of these magnificent animals begins.
Treks depart from the park headquarters (location varies by sector) at 8:00 AM sharp. Depending on the gorilla family’s location that morning, the hike can last anywhere from 30 minutes to five hours. Altitude ranges between 1,400 and 2,500 metres, and the terrain is steep and sometimes muddy. A moderate level of fitness is recommended.
You will be assigned to a group of eight trekkers plus two ranger guides and a porter. Porters can be hired at the trailhead for a modest fee and are invaluable for assistance with the terrain. Kenlink Tours always recommends hiring one.
Once you locate the gorilla family, your one-hour encounter begins. You must maintain a distance of at least seven metres from the gorillas at all times and follow all ranger instructions. Photography without flash is allowed. This is a moment that most travellers describe as the most profound wildlife experience of their lives.
No gorilla safari is complete without exploring more of what Uganda has to offer. Consider adding a chimpanzee tracking safari in Kibale Forest, a game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park, or a thundering boat cruise up the Nile at Murchison Falls. For those who want to extend across borders, our 10-Day Rwanda and Uganda Safari and 4-Day Rwanda-Uganda Golden Monkey and Gorilla Trek offer the ultimate dual-destination primate experience.
