Murchison Falls Entry Gates

Entry points, or gates, to Murchison Falls National Park serve as the main entrances and exits for visitors wishing to explore the park. These entry points are essential for tourists engaging in various activities within the park and for leaving once their safari experience is complete. Murchison Falls National Park has several entry points, particularly in the Paraa region, which is the central hub for most tourist and safari activities.

To reach the heart of Murchison Falls National Park, visitors must cross the Nile River, the world’s longest river, which divides the park into two sections: the northern and southern sectors. The northern sector is especially notable for its attractions. The Nile also boasts major tourist highlights, including the spectacular Murchison Falls.

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s premier national park, being the oldest and most frequently visited park in the northwestern part of the country. The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity, home to over 75 species of mammals and nearly 450 bird species. These animals inhabit various environments, such as tropical rainforests, rivers, savannah grasslands, and woodland areas. Visitors traveling from Kampala will need to drive approximately 300 kilometers to reach one of the park’s entry gates.

Murchison Falls National Park is an excellent destination for viewing the Big Five mammals. While rhinos can be seen at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary en route to the park, visitors can enjoy sightings of lions, buffaloes, elephants, and leopards within the park. Additionally, the park is home to hyenas, warthogs, hippos, Uganda kobs, black-and-white colobus monkeys, olive baboons, and large crocodiles, among other species.

The entrance gates of Murchison Falls National Park are categorized based on the different sections of the park. The park has more than five entrance and exit points that visitors can use for exploring this magnificent destination. The main entry gates are as follows:

The Bugungu Gate, located in the southern part of Murchison Falls National Park, is a bit distant for visitors coming from Kampala, but the route is well-maintained and tarmacked. This road offers breathtaking views of the spectacular Rift Valley, a view over Lake Albert to the Congo’s mountains, and passes through Budongo Forest, which is home to chimpanzees. The drive to the leisure area takes about 135 kilometers.

Visitors usually pass through Masindi to access the park, continuing through Kaniyo Pabidi Forest to reach Paraa, which is approximately 85 kilometers away.

Several gates serve the northern part of the park, convenient for visitors coming from Gulu or Kidepo Valley National Park. These include:

  • Tangi Gate: Located in the northern part of Murchison Falls National Park, this entrance requires passing through Paraa and crossing the Nile via the Murchison Falls bridge, which operates all day. Tangi Gate is about 110 kilometers from Karuma Falls.

  • Chobe Gate: Situated in the northern section of the park, the Chobe entry point can be reached from Paraa and Karuma Falls, both near Pakwach. It is only 2 kilometers north of the Karuma Falls bridge.

  • Kicumbanyobo Gate: This is located in the Southern Part of the park, and is the nearest gate when you are driving from Kampala through Masindi district. Kicumbanyobo Gate is the main gate of Murchison Falls National Park.

Murchison Falls National Park is open year-round, though the best time to visit is during the dry seasons from December to mid-March and June to September. Visitors can enjoy comfortable accommodations ranging from luxury to mid-range to budget options. Some notable lodges and camps include Paraa Safari Lodge, Parkside Safari Lodge, Chobe Safari Lodge, Red Chilli Rest Camp, Budongo Eco-Lodge, Sambiya River Lodge, and Shoebill Campsite.

Tourists can visit the park in a 4WD safari vehicle by booking through a tour company that provides transportation and a local guide, or they can use their vehicles.

Additionally, Murchison Falls National Park is accessible by air. The park has several airstrips: Pakuba Airfield in the north, Bugungu Airstrip in the south, and Chobe Airstrip in the east. These can be reached via chartered flights from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield near Kampala.
