One day tour to Murchison Falls. Yes, a one day tour to Murchison Falls is possible, but it needs careful planning. Murchison Falls National Park lies about 300 kilometers north-west of Kampala, roughly five to six hours away by road. That means a same-day return by road is a very long day of 14 to 17 hours, with most of the time spent driving. For many travellers, a fly-in day trip or an overnight stay gives a much better experience.
Still, if you are short on time, staying in Kampala or Entebbe, or simply want to see one of the world’s most powerful waterfalls, a day tour can work. This guide explains the three main ways to do it, gives sample itineraries, shows what each option costs, and helps you decide whether a day trip or a short safari suits you better. It is written by the team at Kenlink Tours, who have been guiding travellers in Uganda since 2010.
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest national park, covering about 3,840 square kilometres. Its star attraction is the point where the Victoria Nile forces its way through a gap only about seven metres wide before crashing some 43 metres below. The park is also home to elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, lions, hippos, crocodiles and more than 450 bird species. Read more about Uganda’s top parks in our Uganda destination guide.
The road day trip is for travellers who want to see the falls and do not mind a very early start and a late return. The key to success is leaving before dawn, focusing on the southern side of the park and skipping long activities.
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 4:00 am | Pickup from your hotel in Kampala (about 3:00 am from Entebbe) |
| 6:30 am | Breakfast stop on the Gulu Highway near Luweero or Nakasongola |
| 9:30 am | Arrive in Masindi and continue to the park gate |
| 10:30 am | Hike to the top of the falls for close views of the gorge and the roaring water |
| 12:30 pm | Lunch at a lodge near Paraa overlooking the Nile |
| 2:00 pm | Optional boat cruise towards the bottom of the falls, if time allows, or a short drive in the southern section |
| 4:00 pm | Begin the return drive to Kampala |
| 9:00 to 10:00 pm | Arrive back at your hotel in Kampala or later in Entebbe |
In one day by road, you can usually visit the top of the falls, enjoy lunch by the Nile and either take a shortened boat trip or do a brief drive. A full game drive on the northern bank and the delta cruise for shoebills are not practical, because they require crossing the Nile on the Paraa ferry and spending several more hours in the park.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary lies on the road to Murchison and is the only place in Uganda to track rhinos in the wild. Adding rhino tracking to a road day trip makes an already long day even longer, so most travellers either choose Ziwa as a separate day trip from Kampala or include it on a two-day Murchison safari.
This option suits budget travellers, business visitors with one free day, and people who mainly want to photograph the falls. It is less suitable for families with young children, older travellers or anyone who wants to see a lot of wildlife.
Flying is the most comfortable way to enjoy a one day tour to Murchison Falls. Charter and scheduled flights connect Entebbe or Kajjansi airfields with Pakuba and Bugungu airstrips in and near the park, in about one hour each way. Instead of spending 10 or more hours in a car, you spend most of your day enjoying the park.
Flying saves time, avoids traffic and lets you combine a game drive with the boat cruise in one day. The main drawbacks are the higher cost and the need to book flights in advance, as schedules and seat availability can change. Charter flights offer the most flexibility for families and small groups.
If you are already travelling in western Uganda, a day tour from Masindi, Budongo or a lodge outside the park is easy and relaxed. Masindi is about one to two hours from the falls, so you can enjoy a full morning game drive, the afternoon boat cruise and the top of the falls, then return to your base for dinner. This option works well for travellers on a self-drive or tailor-made route through the region. Our car hire service can provide a 4×4 with an experienced driver-guide for this kind of trip.
Even in a single day, Murchison offers unforgettable sights. Here are the highlights you can expect, depending on your chosen option.
Standing above the narrow gorge as the entire Nile explodes through the rocks is the highlight of any visit. The noise, the spray and the rainbows on sunny days make for incredible photos. A short trail from the car park leads to several viewpoints along the edge.
The launch trip from Paraa heads upstream towards the bottom of the falls. Along the riverbanks, you may see large pods of hippos, huge Nile crocodiles, elephants coming to drink and buffaloes cooling off in the shallows. Birdlife is rich, with kingfishers, bee-eaters, herons and fish eagles.
On a fly-in trip or a stay near the park, a game drive on the northern bank is possible. The open grasslands near the Buligi tracks hold herds of buffaloes, elephants and Uganda kobs, plus Rothschild’s giraffes, which are a special sight in Uganda. Lions and leopards are also present, though sightings depend on luck.
The drive north passes small trading towns, sugarcane and maize fields, and the forests around Budongo. Your guide will share stories about Ugandan farming, culture and history, so even the road becomes part of the experience.
A single day is usually too short for the Nile delta cruise to look for shoebills, chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest, sport fishing or a sunrise game drive. If these are on your wish list, consider a two or three-day safari instead.
The price of a Murchison day tour depends on whether you drive or fly, the size of your group and the activities you choose. The ranges below are approximate guides per person; always ask for a written quote for your date.
| Day tour option | Approximate price per person (2 people) | Approximate price per person (4 people) |
|---|---|---|
| By road from Kampala | US$250 to US$400 | US$170 to US$280 |
| Fly-in from Entebbe (scheduled flight) | US$700 to US$1,100 | US$650 to US$1,000 |
| From Masindi or a nearby lodge | US$150 to US$250 | US$100 to US$180 |
A full-service day tour normally includes hotel pickup and drop-off, a private 4×4 safari vehicle with a professional driver-guide, fuel, park entry fees, the activities listed in your itinerary, lunch and bottled drinking water. Fly-in tours also include flights and airstrip transfers.
Tips, drinks, souvenirs and optional activities not listed in the itinerary are usually extra. Read the terms and conditions before booking so you understand cancellation rules, especially for flights.
If your schedule allows, adding even one night transforms your Murchison experience. You can enjoy a relaxed sunset at the top of the falls, a sunrise game drive and the boat cruise without rushing.
A two-day trip is the most popular upgrade from a day tour. You can stop at Ziwa to track rhinos, visit the top of the falls on day one, then enjoy a morning game drive and the Nile cruise on day two before driving back.
Three days is ideal. You can add the Nile delta cruise for shoebills or chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest. This 3 Days Safari to Murchison Falls shows the classic short route from Kampala or Entebbe, and this 4 Days Wildlife and Primate Safari adds more primates and wildlife.
Many travellers include Murchison as the first stop on a longer journey to chimps, tree-climbing lions and gorillas. Our 7 Days Gorilla and Wildlife Safari, 10 Days Uganda Adventure Safari and 10 Days Best of Primate and Culture can all include Murchison. For comparison, see the 7 Days Uganda Safari one-week tour and the 10 Days Uganda Primates and Wildlife safari, which begins with a drive north from Entebbe to Murchison.
From Murchison, longer routes continue to Kibale Forest National Park for chimps, Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and the Kazinga Channel, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorillas. Our 3-Day Chimpanzee Tracking Safari, 3 Days Queen Elizabeth National Park safari and 3-Day Uganda Gorillas Safari can be added to any Murchison trip.
For the full Uganda experience, our 18-Day Adventure in Uganda and 20-Day Wildlife and Nature Experience both feature Murchison Falls. Murchison Falls can be visited all year, but the season affects road conditions and wildlife viewing. The dry months from December to February and June to September offer the most reliable roads, which matters on a long day trip, and animals gather near the Nile, making them easier to see from the boat. The wetter months from March to May and October to November bring lush scenery, fewer visitors and the most powerful flow at the falls, but rain can slow the drive and make the trail to the top of the falls slippery.
Whatever the season, weekdays are usually better than weekends for leaving Kampala early, and starting before sunrise is always the smartest choice.
The drive takes about five to six hours each way from Kampala, covering roughly 300 kilometres. From Entebbe, add about one to one and a half hours, depending on traffic.
Road day tours usually start between 3:00 am and 4:00 am from Kampala or Entebbe, so you reach the park by mid-morning. Fly-in day trips start later, usually with a morning flight.
Yes. On the Nile boat cruise you can see hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes and many birds. A fly-in trip also allows a game drive on the northern plains, where giraffes, kobs, elephants and sometimes lions can be seen.
It is worth it if you only have one free day and mainly want to see the falls and the Nile. If you can spare an extra night, a two or three-day safari offers far more wildlife and a much more relaxed experience for only a little more money.
Children can join, but the long hours in the car can be tiring for young travellers. Families with small children usually prefer a fly-in day trip or an overnight stay. Explore more family-friendly wildlife safari ideas for inspiration.
Yes, if you arrive the night before. Most travellers spend their arrival night in Entebbe, then start the day tour early the next morning. If you land in the morning, a fly-in trip or an overnight safari is a better choice.
Booking at least a few days ahead is best, so your operator can arrange the vehicle, guide, lunch and boat times. Fly-in day trips should be booked as early as possible because seats on light aircraft are limited.
A one day tour to Murchison Falls is a bold but rewarding adventure. By road, it is a long day that rewards you with the roaring falls, the Nile and a taste of Uganda’s wildlife. By air, it becomes a comfortable, action-packed day that combines a game drive and a boat cruise. And from a nearby base like Masindi, it is easy and relaxed. If you can add a night, a short safari will give you even more.
