Uganda Safaris to Murchison Falls from Entebbe or Kampala. If you want a classic African safari without a long journey, Uganda safaris to Murchison Falls are the perfect choice. Just a few hours’ drive from Entebbe and Kampala, Murchison Falls National Park combines big game drives, thrilling boat cruises on the Nile, rare birds and one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world. It is Uganda’s largest national park and one of its most rewarding.
This guide explains everything you need to plan your trip: how to get there from Entebbe or Kampala, the top activities, the safari packages available, what a Murchison safari costs, the best time to go, and how Kenlink Tours can design the perfect itinerary for you.
Murchison Falls National Park covers about 3,840 square kilometres in north-western Uganda, making it the country’s largest protected area. Together with neighbouring reserves, it forms the wider Murchison Falls Conservation Area. The park was first protected as a game reserve in the 1920s and became a national park in 1952, making it one of Uganda’s oldest.
The park takes its name from its main attraction. Here, the entire Victoria Nile squeezes through a gap in the rocks only about seven metres wide before plunging some 43 metres into a thundering pool below. The roar, the spray and the rainbows make it one of the most dramatic sights in Africa.
The Nile divides the park into north and south. The northern savannah is home to elephants, buffaloes, Rothschild’s giraffes, Uganda kobs, Jackson’s hartebeests, oribis, warthogs, lions and leopards. The river itself holds huge numbers of hippos and some of Africa’s largest Nile crocodiles. With more than 450 recorded bird species, including the rare shoebill in the Nile delta, Murchison is also a top birding destination.
In the south of the conservation area lies Budongo Forest, a large tropical rainforest that is home to chimpanzees and many other primates. It adds a primate experience to your savannah safari without a long detour. Discover more about Uganda’s parks in our Uganda destination guide.
Murchison Falls is one of the easiest major parks to reach from Uganda’s capital. You can drive in a 4×4 safari vehicle or take a short flight.
The drive from Kampala to the park’s southern gates takes about five to six hours, covering roughly 300 kilometres. Most routes head north on the Gulu Highway through Luweero and Nakasongola, then turn west towards Masindi. The roads are mostly tarmac, with a final stretch of murram inside the park.
Starting from Entebbe adds about one to one and a half hours. Using the Entebbe–Kampala Expressway and the Northern Bypass, your driver avoids most of central Kampala’s traffic. Many tour companies pick you up directly from Entebbe International Airport and head north the same morning.
The best way to break the journey is a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola, about halfway between Kampala and the park. Ziwa is the only place in Uganda where you can see rhinos in the wild. Rangers lead you on foot to track southern white rhinos, getting surprisingly close while staying safe. Most safaris include rhino tracking on the way to Murchison.
Scheduled and charter flights connect Entebbe and Kajjansi airfields with Pakuba and Bugungu airstrips in and near the park. The flight takes about an hour and is ideal for short stays or for travellers combining Murchison with other parks.
The Victoria Nile splits the park in two. A vehicle ferry at Paraa carries cars and passengers across the river several times a day, linking the southern lodges with the game-drive areas on the northern bank. Our car hire service provides 4×4 safari vehicles with pop-up roofs and experienced driver-guides who know the ferry times and the best tracks.
Murchison offers more variety than almost any other park in Uganda. These are the experiences most safaris include.
Early morning and late afternoon game drives across the Buligi area and the northern plains offer the best wildlife viewing. Expect large herds of buffaloes and elephants, tall Rothschild’s giraffes, Uganda kobs and, with luck, lions resting in the grass or a leopard in the trees. The views across the plains to Lake Albert are beautiful at sunrise.
The afternoon launch trip from Paraa travels upstream towards the base of the falls. Along the way, you pass pods of hippos, basking crocodiles, elephants drinking at the water’s edge and colourful birds such as kingfishers and bee-eaters. The cruise ends with a close view of the falls thundering down the gorge.
For the full experience, hike to the top of the falls. Many boat trips drop hikers at the base for a guided climb of about 45 minutes to an hour to the viewpoint at the top. Standing above the narrow gorge as the Nile explodes below is unforgettable.
A morning boat cruise downstream to the delta, where the Nile enters Lake Albert, is a must for birders. The papyrus swamps are one of Uganda’s best places to spot the prehistoric-looking shoebill stork, along with many waterbirds.
In Budongo Forest, guided walks take you to see habituated chimpanzees moving through giant mahogany and ironwood trees. It is a great primate add-on if you are not visiting Kibale.
The Nile below the falls is famous for Nile perch and tigerfish. Licensed anglers can enjoy catch-and-release fishing with experienced local guides.
Guided walks along the Nile, visits to the Kaniyo Pabidi forest and community experiences in nearby villages add depth to your safari and support local people.
Whether you have a weekend or two weeks, there is a Murchison safari that fits. Here are the most popular options, with links so you can compare full itineraries.
A two-day trip is possible if you are short on time. You drive from Kampala early, enjoy the afternoon boat cruise to the falls, do a morning game drive on day two and return to Kampala or Entebbe in the evening. It is a busy schedule, so we usually recommend at least three days.
The three-day safari is the most popular choice. Day one includes rhino tracking at Ziwa and a visit to the top of the falls. Day two offers a morning game drive and the afternoon Nile cruise. Day three adds an optional delta cruise or chimp walk before the drive back. This 3 Days Safari to Murchison Falls shows the classic short route.
A fourth day lets you add chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest and the shoebill cruise in the Nile delta at a relaxed pace. It is ideal for wildlife photographers and birders. For a similar mix of wildlife and primates, see this 4 Days Wildlife and Primate Safari.
Many travellers start in the north with Murchison, then head south-west for chimps, Queen Elizabeth and gorillas. Our 7 Days Gorilla and Wildlife Safari and 8-Day Uganda Gorilla, Chimpanzee and Wildlife Safari can be adapted to include Murchison. For comparison, this 7 Days Uganda Safari one-week tour covers Uganda’s three most iconic wildlife experiences.
Ten days is the ideal length to see Uganda’s highlights. A typical route runs from Entebbe to Ziwa and Murchison, then on to Kibale Forest National Park for chimps, Queen Elizabeth National Park for tree-climbing lions and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorillas. Our 10 Days Uganda Adventure Safari and 10 Days Best of Primate and Culture follow this pattern, as does the 10 Days Uganda Primates and Wildlife safari, which begins with a scenic drive north from Entebbe to Murchison.
With more time, you can explore every corner of Uganda. Our 18-Day Adventure in Uganda, 20-Day Wildlife and Nature Experience and 25-Day Wildlife, Gorilla and Chimps Adventure all include Murchison Falls. You can also compare a 14-Day Uganda Primates and Safari Adventure.
Murchison’s delta is a highlight of any Uganda birding trip. Our 7-Day Birdwatching Safari in Uganda and this 18 Days Uganda Birding and Wildlife Safari offer excellent chances of seeing the shoebill.
Solo travellers can join shared trips to cut costs. Check our group tours and scheduled departure safaris for upcoming dates. Browse all our Uganda safari packages to find your perfect match.
Murchison is one of Uganda’s best-value safaris because it needs no expensive gorilla permit. Your total cost depends on the number of days, your lodge choice, group size and activities.
The ranges below are approximate guides for a private safari from Kampala or Entebbe for two people sharing. Always ask for a written quote for your dates.
| Safari length | Budget | Mid-range | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|

| 3 days | US$500 to US$700 pp | US$700 to US$1,100 pp | US$1,400+ pp |
| 4 days | US$650 to US$900 pp | US$950 to US$1,400 pp | US$1,800+ pp |
Park entry is charged per person per day, plus a vehicle fee. Activities such as the launch trip to the falls, the delta cruise, rhino tracking at Ziwa and chimp tracking in Budongo each carry their own fees. Groups of four or more pay less per person because the vehicle and guide costs are shared, and flying in costs more than driving.
Murchison has lodges for every budget. Budget travellers can stay at simple bandas and campsites near Paraa or Masindi. Mid-range guests enjoy comfortable lodges overlooking the Nile on the southern bank, while luxury travellers can choose upmarket lodges and tented camps with pools and river views. Staying close to Paraa saves time on the morning ferry and the afternoon cruise.
Most full-service Murchison packages include pickup in Entebbe or Kampala, a private 4×4 with a driver-guide, fuel, park entry fees, the activities listed in the itinerary, accommodation, meals and bottled water. Tips, drinks and personal items are usually extra. Read the terms and conditions of any booking so you know what is covered.

Murchison can be visited all year. The dry seasons from December to February and June to September are best for game drives, as animals gather near water and the grass is shorter. The wetter months from March to May and October to November bring green landscapes, fewer visitors and excellent birding, although some tracks can become muddy. The falls are at their most powerful after the rains.
Here is how a typical three-day Murchison safari runs.
The park’s southern gates are about five to six hours by road from Kampala, roughly 300 kilometres. From Entebbe, allow about six to seven hours. Flights from Entebbe take about an hour.
It is possible but not recommended. The long drive leaves little time for activities. A two-day trip is the minimum, and three days is ideal to enjoy the falls, a game drive and the boat cruise without rushing.
Murchison has four of the Big Five: elephants, buffaloes, lions and leopards. Rhinos are not found inside the park, but you can track white rhinos at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the way, completing your Big Five experience.
Yes. Murchison is a well-managed national park with ranger patrols and experienced guides. Follow your guide’s advice during game drives and walks, and you will have a safe and enjoyable safari.
Absolutely. Many travellers start with Murchison in the north, then travel south-west through Kibale and Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi for gorillas. A trip of seven to ten days covers this route comfortably.
Both are excellent. Murchison offers the dramatic falls, giraffes, the Nile cruise and shoebills, while Queen Elizabeth is known for tree-climbing lions, crater lakes and the Kazinga Channel. If you have time, visit both. Explore more wildlife safari ideas to compare.
