Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safaris

Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safaris. If there is one wildlife experience that can genuinely change how you see the natural world, it is coming face to face with a wild mountain gorilla in the misty forests of Uganda. Uganda is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, making it the premier destination on earth for gorilla trekking safaris. Whether you are a seasoned safari traveler or planning your very first African adventure, a Uganda gorilla trekking experience promises memories that will last a lifetime.

Why Uganda is the World’s Top Gorilla Trekking Destination

Uganda offers what no other country can quite match — an intimate, well-regulated, and deeply moving gorilla trekking experience within some of Africa’s most spectacular landscapes. The country hosts approximately 460 mountain gorillas across its protected national parks, all managed under the careful stewardship of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the official government body responsible for conserving Uganda’s wildlife and national parks.

Unlike other East African destinations, Uganda combines gorilla trekking with extraordinary birding, chimpanzee tracking, and savannah game drives — all within a single safari itinerary. At Kenlink Tours, we have designed Uganda safari packages that let you experience the very best of this incredible country without missing a single highlight.

Where to Go: Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks

Uganda has two national parks where gorilla trekking takes place, and choosing the right one is key to crafting your perfect safari.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is by far the most popular and is divided into four trekking sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Each sector offers a slightly different terrain and atmosphere. Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse rainforests, sheltering over 120 mammal species and more than 350 bird species alongside its gorilla families. Our dedicated Bwindi Gorilla Trekking page walks you through everything you need to know about each sector before you book.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in the Virunga volcanic highlands, is smaller and less visited, offering a more exclusive trekking experience. It is also the only place in Uganda where you can combine gorilla trekking with golden monkey tracking on the same trip.

Gorilla Permits: What You Need to Know

Gorilla trekking in Uganda requires a valid gorilla trekking permit, officially issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. As of 2024, permits are priced at USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents and must be booked well in advance, especially during the peak dry seasons of June to August and December to February.

Each permit allows you one hour with a habituated gorilla family, a rule strictly enforced to protect the gorillas’ health and wellbeing. Groups are limited to a maximum of eight trekkers per gorilla family per day. Permits sell out months ahead, so early booking is strongly advised. You can book your gorilla permits and safari package directly through us, and we handle all the logistics on your behalf.

What to Expect During Your Gorilla Trek

The trek itself typically begins early in the morning at the park’s ranger station, where you receive a briefing from your UWA guide. Treks can range from 30 minutes to six hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight. The terrain can be steep and muddy, so sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, and gloves are highly recommended.

When you finally encounter the gorilla family — a silverback resting in the undergrowth, juveniles tumbling through the branches, a mother cradling her infant — the experience is profoundly moving. Nothing fully prepares you for that first moment of connection. It is, without question, the most powerful wildlife encounter available anywhere on the planet.

After the trek, many of our guests extend their Uganda safari to include other incredible experiences such as chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, a Nile cruise at Murchison Falls, or a game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
