3 Day Mgahinga Gorilla trekking safari. Embark on a thrilling 3-day gorilla trekking safari to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda’s smallest yet most scenic park, nestled in the southwestern corner near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mgahinga is part of the greater Virunga Mountain range and is home to the rare and endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and rich Batwa cultural heritage. Unlike the more famous Bwindi, Mgahinga offers a more intimate and serene trekking experience, with stunning views of volcanic peaks, bamboo forests, and diverse wildlife.
This short yet adventurous safari is perfect for travelers who are limited on time but wish to have a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with the majestic mountain gorillas. The trip starts and ends in Kampala or Entebbe, with options to tailor the pickup and drop-off to your needs.
To Kampala/Entebbe: 8–10 hours

Your journey begins early in the morning as you depart Kampala or Entebbe for the long but rewarding drive to southwestern Uganda. You’ll travel through the scenic countryside, rolling hills, and terraced farmlands of western Uganda, with brief stops along the way.
Enjoy a stopover at the Equator in Kayabwe for photos and an optional water experiment to see the Coriolis effect. Proceed through the towns of Mbarara and Kabale, arriving in Kisoro town in the evening.
As you approach Mgahinga, the landscape dramatically shifts to misty volcanoes, lush forests, and cool mountain air. You’ll check in at your lodge near the park, where you’ll rest and prepare for the next day’s gorilla trekking adventure.
Estimated Travel Time: 8–10 hours by road
Meal Plan: Lunch en route, Dinner at the lodge
Accommodation Options:

After an early breakfast, head to Ntebeko Visitor Center for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You’ll be assigned to a specific gorilla family—most commonly the Nyakagezi group, known for its playful juveniles and a dominant silverback named Mark.
At around 8:00 AM, you’ll begin the trek into the forested slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes. The trek can take between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location and your pace. Once found, you’re allowed to spend one magical hour observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat—watching them feed, groom, play, and interact.
The experience is deeply moving and often described as life-changing. Your guide will share information about gorilla behavior, conservation efforts, and the ecosystem around you.
After your trek, descend the mountain and return to the starting point for your trekking certificate. You’ll then head back to your lodge for a hot lunch and well-deserved rest. In the afternoon, if time and energy allow, you can opt for a short community visit to the Batwa pygmies, the indigenous forest dwellers who once lived in the park.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Packed Lunch during trek, Dinner at the lodge
Accommodation: Same as Day 1
After a leisurely breakfast, begin your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe. Alternatively, if your travel plans allow, you may choose to transfer to Kigali, Rwanda, which is much closer (around 4 hours from Kisoro), making Mgahinga a great cross-border extension.
Along the return journey to Kampala, you’ll stop for lunch and enjoy views of Uganda’s green highlands and traditional homesteads. Reflect on the unforgettable memories made during your trek with the mountain gorillas.
