Ntebeko Gate Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Ntebeko Gate is the primary and only entrance to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, situated in the southwestern region of Uganda. This gate is located approximately 10 kilometers from Kisoro town, accessible via a dusty road that winds through the scenic landscapes of the area. As the sole entry point into the park, Ntebeko Gate serves as a crucial access point for all visitors, regardless of the direction from which they arrive.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, nestled in the Virunga Mountains, is a vital habitat for the endangered mountain gorillas. Although it is the smallest national park in Uganda, it plays a significant role in the conservation of these magnificent creatures. The park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which spans across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

One of the unique features of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is its single gorilla family, known as the Nyakagezi group. As of September 2024, this group comprises nine members, including three dominant silverbacks. The Nyakagezi family is renowned for its relatively stable and accessible nature, often making it one of the most sought-after groups for gorilla trekking enthusiasts.

Visitors to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can expect an intimate and exclusive gorilla trekking experience due to the limited number of gorillas and the park’s lesser-known status compared to other gorilla habitats in the region. The trek through the park’s dense forest, accompanied by experienced guides, offers not only the chance to observe these gentle giants up close but also to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Virunga landscape, teeming with diverse flora and fauna.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park’s commitment to conservation and its unique offering of an intimate gorilla encounter make it a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

In Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Gorilla trekking normally begins at 08am at Ntebeko with a gorilla tracking briefing by experienced rangers.  Tourist are advised to reach at this point at least latest 07:30am to have some few minutes of relaxing before briefing.
