4-Day Gorilla Double Trekking Safari in Uganda

Gorilla double trekking safari in Uganda offers a thrilling and intimate experience with the majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. This adventure takes you to the misty jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, home to more than half of the world’s mountain gorilla population. Below is a detailed itinerary for this unforgettable safari.

Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome by your safari guide at Entebbe International Airport or your hotel in Kampala. After a briefing on the safari, you will embark on a scenic drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The journey, which takes approximately 8-9 hours, offers picturesque views of Uganda’s countryside, rolling hills, terraced farms, and lush vegetation. En route, you will have a stopover at the equator for a photo session and a chance to enjoy local crafts. Another stop for lunch will be in Mbarara town, known for its vibrant culture and cuisine.

Arrive at your lodge in the evening, where you’ll relax, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the thrilling gorilla trekking experience the next day.

Day 2: First Gorilla Trekking Experience

After an early breakfast, you’ll head to the park headquarters for a briefing by park rangers. Here, you’ll learn about gorilla behavior, trekking guidelines, and safety precautions. Equipped with a trekking permit, you’ll set off into the dense forest in search of a gorilla family.

The trek can take between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. As you navigate the challenging terrain, your guide will point out various bird species, plants, and other wildlife. Once you encounter the gorillas, you’ll spend an awe-inspiring hour observing their behavior, interactions, and playful antics.

Return to your lodge for relaxation and reflect on the incredible experience. Optional activities in the afternoon include a community walk to interact with the Batwa people, the original inhabitants of the forest.

After the first gorilla trekking experience, you may opt for a nature or community walk within the park, to encounter the area’s outstanding nature.

Day 3: Second Gorilla Trekking Adventure

After another early breakfast, you’ll head back to the forest for your second gorilla trekking experience. This day offers an opportunity to visit a different gorilla family, allowing you to compare their unique dynamics and behavior.

The second trek provides a deeper connection with these gentle giants, as you’ll have honed your trekking skills and understanding of gorilla tracking. Enjoy another magical hour in the company of a new gorilla group, capturing memories and deepening your appreciation for their conservation.

Return to the lodge for lunch, followed by an optional nature walk or relaxation as you soak in the serene environment. Share stories around the campfire in the evening as you savor a delicious dinner.

Day 4: Return to Kampala or Entebbe

After breakfast, bid farewell to Bwindi’s breathtaking landscapes as you embark on the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. Enjoy more stunning scenery along the way, including the beautiful terraced hills of Kigezi and the expansive plains of Ankole.

Lunch will be served en route in Mbarara or Masaka, where you can enjoy traditional Ugandan dishes. Depending on your departure schedule, your safari guide will drop you off at Entebbe International Airport for your flight or at your preferred location in Kampala, marking the end of your incredible gorilla trekking safari.
