Gorilla Tours in Uganda

Gorilla Tours in Uganda. Uganda is one of the best places in the world to encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Gorilla tours in Uganda offer unforgettable adventures that combine wildlife, culture, and scenic beauty. With more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas living in Uganda’s protected forests, the country stands out as a premier gorilla trekking destination.

Where to See Gorillas in Uganda

The main destinations for gorilla trekking in Uganda are:

  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to about 21 habituated gorilla families. Bwindi’s thick rainforest provides a truly wild trekking experience. The park is divided into four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.

  • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, Mgahinga has one habituated gorilla family called the Nyakagezi group. This park is also famous for golden monkey tracking and stunning volcanic landscapes.

Both parks are located in southwestern Uganda, near the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Gorilla Trekking Permits

A gorilla trekking permit is required to participate in a gorilla tour. In Uganda, a permit costs USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. These permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and allow one hour of close interaction with a gorilla family. Because permits are limited and in high demand, booking several months in advance is strongly recommended.

The Gorilla Trekking Experience

A gorilla trek typically begins with an early morning briefing at the park headquarters. Visitors are assigned to small groups and guided by experienced rangers who track the gorillas through the forest. Trekking can take anywhere from 2 to 7 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family.

Once the gorillas are found, visitors spend one magical hour observing them. Watching a silverback’s dominance, playful juveniles tumbling around, or mothers tenderly caring for their babies creates an emotional connection that is hard to forget. Photography is allowed, but flash is prohibited.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla tours in Uganda can be done year-round. However, the dry seasons (June to September and December to February) are considered the best times. Trails are less muddy and the forest is more accessible. During the rainy seasons (March to May and October to November), trekking is still possible, though more challenging. The advantage of the wet season is fewer crowds and lush green scenery.

Physical Fitness and Requirements

Gorilla trekking can be strenuous due to steep terrain, high altitude, and thick vegetation. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Porters are available to carry bags and provide support, making the trek manageable even for less active travelers. Age restrictions apply: only individuals aged 15 years and above are allowed to trek.

Accommodation Options

Uganda offers a range of accommodation options near Bwindi and Mgahinga. From luxury lodges with spectacular forest views to mid-range safari lodges and budget guesthouses, there’s something for every traveler. Staying close to the trekking sector is recommended to reduce travel time in the morning.

Combining Gorilla Tours with Other Safaris

One of Uganda’s unique advantages is the ability to combine gorilla trekking with other safari activities. Travelers can explore Queen Elizabeth National Park for tree-climbing lions, Kazinga Channel boat cruises, and elephants; visit Kibale Forest for chimpanzee tracking; or head to Murchison Falls National Park for the powerful waterfalls and abundant wildlife. This makes Uganda a well-rounded safari destination.
