Uganda Gorilla Permits - How to Book

Uganda Gorilla Permits – How to Book. Gorilla trekking is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on earth, offering travelers a rare opportunity to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in their natural forest habitat. To take part in this life-changing adventure, every visitor must secure a gorilla permit, which is a mandatory legal requirement issued by government wildlife authorities in gorilla-range countries.

Gorilla permits are official documents or tickets issued by wildlife-regulating bodies in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These permits grant visitors access to designated gorilla national parks and allow them to spend a strictly controlled amount of time with a specific gorilla family. In Uganda, gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. In Rwanda, trekking occurs in Volcanoes National Park, while in DRC, it is conducted in Virunga National Park within the Virunga mountain ranges.

Because gorilla permits are limited and highly competitive, proper planning and early booking are essential to avoid disappointment.

Gorilla Permits in Uganda

In Uganda, gorilla permits are issued and managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the government body responsible for managing national parks and wildlife conservation. A gorilla permit allows a visitor to track one habituated gorilla family on a specific date and spend one hour observing the gorillas once they are located.

Although Uganda Wildlife Authority issues the permits, the booking process can be challenging for international travelers. Only Ugandan citizens and foreign residents living in Uganda are permitted to book gorilla permits directly with UWA. For this reason, international visitors are strongly advised to secure their permits through licensed and genuinely registered tour operators.

Working with a professional tour operator simplifies the booking process, ensures availability is checked correctly, and helps coordinate accommodation, transportation, and trekking logistics.

Planning Your Gorilla Safari: Key Questions Answered

Before embarking on your gorilla trekking adventure, most travelers have several important questions. These include:

  • What is the current cost of a gorilla permit in Uganda?

  • Are there discounted permits for African nationals?

  • How do you book a gorilla permit?

  • What happens if you need to cancel or reschedule?

  • When is the best time to book a permit?

Understanding these details early makes it easier to plan a successful and stress-free gorilla safari.

Why a Gorilla Permit Is Essential

A gorilla permit is the most important requirement for anyone planning to trek gorillas in Uganda. Without it, you will not be allowed to enter the gorilla tracking areas or participate in the trek. Each permit allows one trek per person per day, meaning one individual can track only one gorilla family on the assigned date.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park currently has 24 fully habituated gorilla families available for trekking. These families are spread across four main trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has one habituated family available for tracking.

Because the sectors are geographically distant from one another, traveling between them can take anywhere from 3 to 7 hours. It is therefore extremely important to book your gorilla permit for the same sector where you plan to stay. Booking accommodation in one sector while holding a permit in another may result in long, exhausting transfers and missed briefings.

Understanding Gorilla Trekking Sectors in Bwindi

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is divided into four main gorilla trekking sectors, each offering a unique trekking experience:

  • Buhoma Sector – The oldest and most developed sector, popular for its accessibility and range of lodges.

  • Ruhija Sector – Known for its cooler climate and excellent birding opportunities.

  • Rushaga Sector – Offers the highest number of gorilla families and the gorilla habituation experience.

  • Nkuringo Sector – Characterized by steeper terrain and more challenging treks.

Because permits are sector-specific, travelers should always confirm permit availability before booking accommodation.

Packaged Gorilla Safari Offers

When travelers book a pre-arranged gorilla safari package, the gorilla permit is usually included in the total price. In addition to the permit, such packages typically include:

  • Ground transportation in a safari vehicle

  • Professional driver-guide services

  • Accommodation with private facilities

  • Park entrance fees

  • Meals as specified in the itinerary

Some of the most popular Bwindi gorilla safari packages include:

  • 1-Day Bwindi Gorilla Trek from Kigali, Kabale, or Kisoro

  • 2-Day Bwindi Gorilla Trek starting from Kigali

  • 3-Day Bwindi Gorilla Trek from Kampala or Kigali

  • 3-Day Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi, allowing up to 4 hours with gorillas

  • 4-Day Double Gorilla Trek Safari, offering two separate gorilla trekking experiences with different families

Booking a package ensures convenience and eliminates the stress of coordinating permits independently.

How Much Does a Gorilla Permit Cost in Uganda?

The cost of a gorilla permit in Uganda varies depending on the visitor’s residency status. The current official rates are:

  • US$800 – International (Non-Resident) Visitors

  • US$700 – Foreign Residents in Uganda

  • US$500 – Visitors holding other African passports

  • US$80 – East African citizens

These rates apply to both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

The permit fee includes the park entrance fee for the trekking day, meaning visitors can participate in additional activities such as nature walks without paying the standard entrance fee of US$40 for that day.

Why You Should Book Gorilla Permits Early

Gorilla permits are limited because conservation rules restrict each gorilla family to only 8 visitors per day. As a result, demand far exceeds supply, especially during peak travel seasons.

The busiest periods for gorilla trekking in Uganda are:

  • June to September

  • December to February

During these dry seasons, permits can sell out several months—or even a year—in advance. Travelers planning to visit during these months are strongly advised to book permits as early as possible.

That said, gorilla trekking is available throughout the year, including during the rainy or low seasons.

Gorilla Trekking During the Low Season

The low or rainy seasons occur from:

  • March to May

  • October to November

During these months, trekking is still possible, and some travelers prefer this period due to fewer visitors and lush green scenery. While trails may be muddier and rainfall more frequent, gorilla sightings remain excellent year-round.

How to Book Gorilla Permits in Uganda

There are two main ways to book a gorilla permit in Uganda:

Booking Through a Tour Operator

This is the most common and recommended option for international travelers. A reputable tour operator checks availability, reserves permits, handles payment, and collects the permit on your behalf. Book your gorilla permit here

Booking through an operator is faster and more efficient than dealing directly with UWA, especially for travelers outside Uganda.

Booking in Person at Uganda Wildlife Authority

If you are already in Uganda, you may visit the UWA headquarters in Kampala to book a permit directly. However, this option is limited to Ugandans and foreign residents and may involve delays if permits are already allocated to tour companies.

Additional Costs When Booking Through a Tour Operator

Tour operators may charge an additional US$50–US$100 per permit. This fee covers administrative costs such as:

  • Communication with UWA

  • Transport to collect permits

  • Secure handling and delivery

  • Time spent managing bookings and documentation

For travelers booking complete safari packages, this fee is typically already included in the total cost.

Step-by-Step Process of Booking a Gorilla Permit

To book a gorilla permit smoothly, follow these steps:

  1. Inform our reservation team on email: info@kenlinktours.com ,  of your preferred trekking dates

  2. The team checks availability through UWA’s online booking system

  3. Available dates are temporarily reserved

  4. You receive payment instructions (bank transfer or card payment)

  5. Make payment and ensure bank charges are covered.

  6. Send a copy of your passport details

  7. The operator registers your permit with UWA

  8. A receipt with a booking ID is issued as confirmation

Although a gorilla permit does not guarantee a sighting, the success rate is approximately 95%.

Checking Gorilla Permit Availability Online

Gorilla permit availability in Uganda is managed through a centralized online system controlled by Uganda Wildlife Authority. Access to this system is restricted to registered tour operators.

Once you provide your intended travel dates, your tour operator checks which dates and sectors have availability and advises accordingly. This ensures your safari is planned around confirmed permit dates.

Purchasing Gorilla Permits in Uganda

After confirming availability, our team proceeds to purchase the permit from UWA headquarters in Kampala. Gorilla permits are issued strictly on a first-come, first-served basis, making early booking essential.

It is recommended to secure permits 2–3 months in advance, though last-minute bookings may be possible depending on availability.

Ownership and Collection of Gorilla Permits

After purchase, you receive a receipt containing a booking ID. The actual gorilla permit card is usually issued one week before the trekking date.

If booked through Kenlink Tours, you will receive a scanned copy of the receipt as proof of purchase. On the trekking day, the permit is presented at the park headquarters during sign-in and later returned to UWA after use.

Validity of a Gorilla Permit

A gorilla permit is valid only for the specific date printed on it. Once the trekking date passes, the permit expires and cannot be reused.

If changes are necessary, rescheduling should be done at least two weeks in advance through UWA or your tour operator.

Refunds and Cancellation Policy for Gorilla Permits

Gorilla permits are generally non-refundable, but exceptions apply under specific circumstances:

  • Full refund if trekking is prevented due to illness, subject to approval by the Warden in Charge

  • Full refund if gorillas cross into a neighboring country from Mgahinga

  • 75% refund if trekking occurs but gorillas are not seen after a full day

  • Refunds are processed at UWA headquarters in Kampala

Cancellation Penalties

  • 0–8 days before trek: No refund

  • 9–45 days: 25% refund

  • 46–90 days: 50% refund

  • 91 days and above: 75% refund

Visitor Categories and Identification

Permit rates depend on visitor category:

  • Non-residents

  • East African residents

  • Ugandan citizens

Visitors must present valid proof of residence or nationality during booking and at the briefing center.

Important Notes About Standby Permits

Standby permits are no longer officially sold in Bwindi or Mgahinga. However, in rare cases of no-shows or illness, available permits may be offered on the spot at the full price.

Gorilla Trekking Schedule and Briefing Time

  • Tracking hours: 8:30 AM – 7:00 PM

  • Pre-trek briefing: 7:45 AM at park headquarters

  • All visitors must attend the briefing session

  • Visitors are required to exit the forest by 7:00 PM

Booking a gorilla permit is a crucial step in planning a successful gorilla trekking safari in Uganda. With limited permits, high demand, and strict regulations, early planning and working with a reputable tour operator is the best way to secure your place.

With the right preparation, gorilla trekking becomes not just an activity, but a deeply moving encounter with one of the world’s most remarkable wildlife species—an experience that will stay with you forever.
