Which Dates are available for Gorilla Habituation in 2026/2027. Gorilla Habituation is the most intimate, time-rich way to meet mountain gorillas in their natural home. Unlike a standard trek where visitors spend just one hour with gorillas, the Habituation Experience allows a very small group of participants to accompany researchers and guides for up to four hours. This gives you more time to learn, observe, and photograph the gorillas as they gradually become used to human presence. Because spaces are extremely limited and demand is global, planning ahead for 2026/2027 is essential—especially if you want peak-season dates.
Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHE) is a unique activity that allows visitors to join Uganda Wildlife Authority researchers and rangers in the forest to witness the process of “habituating” a gorilla family. Habituation is the gradual process of making wild gorillas accustomed to human presence without altering their natural behavior. It takes researchers years to complete this process, and visitors can take part in it for a day. The experience provides up to four hours with gorillas, compared to the standard one-hour encounter, making it perfect for nature lovers, researchers, photographers, and anyone who wants a deeper connection with these primates.
Gorilla Habituation is available only in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of Uganda’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Within Bwindi, the activity is conducted in the Rushaga sector, located in the southern part of the park. Sometimes, habituation activities are extended into the neighboring Nkuringo sector. Rushaga is special because it is home to several gorilla families undergoing habituation, making it the ideal place to experience this unique activity. The lush forest, steep hills, and misty atmosphere of Bwindi provide a perfect backdrop for this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Uganda Wildlife Authority manages gorilla permits, and the booking system is based on a rolling one-year window. This means permits for a particular date only become available 12 months in advance. For example, if you want to track in August 2026, you can reserve your permit from August 2025 onward. Because the number of permits is extremely limited (usually four slots per day for each gorilla family), they sell out quickly, especially in peak months.
High-demand months (sell out first): June, July, August, September, December, January, and February. These are the dry seasons and coincide with school holidays, making them the busiest times.
Moderate demand months: March, May, and October. These are transitional months with mixed weather but still good availability.
Low-demand months: April and November. These are wetter months, meaning fewer visitors, but still excellent for those who prefer quieter forests and lush scenery.
For 2026 and early 2027, permits will continue to open as dates fall into the one-year booking window. To secure your spot, it’s best to plan now and let a trusted tour operator handle reservations immediately as your target dates become available.
While Gorilla Habituation is possible all year, the dry seasons of June to September and December to February are generally considered the best times. Trails are less slippery, photography conditions are better, and the overall trekking experience is easier. However, the rainy months of March to May and October to November also have their charm—lush vegetation, dramatic mist, and fewer tourists, giving you a more private encounter. The choice depends on your preferences for weather, photography, and crowd levels.
