4 Days Safari to Sipi Falls and Kidepo National Park. Some of Uganda’s most breathtaking places lie far from the usual safari circuit. In the east, Sipi Falls tumbles down the green slopes of Mount Elgon amid coffee farms and cool mountain air. Further north, Kidepo Valley National Park spreads across a vast, golden wilderness ringed by rugged mountains, home to lions, cheetahs, elephants, ostriches and huge herds of buffalo. A 4 days safari to Sipi Falls and Kidepo National Park brings these two contrasting worlds together in one unforgettable journey.
At Kenlink Tours, we love showing travellers this wild, less-visited side of Uganda. In this guide, we share a detailed four-day itinerary, explain the best way to fit both destinations into four days, describe what you will see and do, and cover accommodation, costs, the best time to visit and practical tips for travelling in northeastern Uganda.
Sipi Falls and Kidepo Valley offer completely different experiences, which is exactly why they work so well together:
Read our overview of combining a Kidepo National Park tour with Sipi Falls for more background on the two destinations.
Distances in northeastern Uganda are long. The drive from Kampala to Sipi Falls takes around six to seven hours, the drive from Sipi to Kidepo takes eight to nine hours, and the drive from Kidepo back to Kampala can take ten to twelve hours. Doing the entire trip by road usually needs five days, as our longer itinerary recommends.
To enjoy both destinations in four days without exhausting travel, our recommended approach is to drive in and fly out: travel by road from Kampala to Sipi and on to Kidepo, then fly back to Entebbe from Kidepo’s airstrip on the final day. This saves a full day of driving and gives you a proper game drive on your last morning. Flights to Kidepo run on selected days and can also be chartered, so the itinerary is planned around the flight schedule. If you prefer an all-road trip in four days, we explain that option too.
Early departure. Your Kenlink Tours driver-guide picks you up from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe early in the morning in a comfortable 4×4 safari vehicle. You head east past Mabira Forest, crossing the Nile at Jinja, and continue through Mbale town, with the slopes of Mount Elgon rising ahead.
Arrival at Sipi. After winding up the escarpment road, you reach Sipi in the early afternoon. Check into your lodge, many of which have views straight onto the main waterfall, and enjoy lunch.
Afternoon waterfall hike. Set off on a guided hike to the Sipi Falls, a series of three waterfalls, the highest plunging around 100 metres down the cliff. The trail winds through farms and villages to the base of the falls, where you can feel the spray and take in sweeping views over the plains of eastern Uganda. Return to your lodge for dinner and a well-earned rest in the cool mountain air. On clear evenings, the lights of Mbale and the plains below twinkle far beneath the escarpment, making for a memorable first night of your safari.

Sunrise and coffee. Wake to the sound of the falls and enjoy breakfast with a view. If time allows, join a short coffee experience with a local farmer, where you learn how Sipi’s famous Arabica coffee is picked, sun-dried, roasted and brewed. Sipi’s high altitude and volcanic soils produce some of Uganda’s finest coffee.
Journey north through Karamoja. Depart Sipi for the long but fascinating drive to Kidepo Valley National Park, passing through the semi-arid landscapes of Karamoja via towns such as Moroto and Kotido. The scenery changes dramatically as green highlands give way to open plains, rocky inselbergs and traditional Karamojong homesteads known as manyattas, with herders driving cattle across the landscape. Your guide shares stories about the region’s history and pastoral culture along the way.
Arrival at Kidepo. You arrive at your lodge in the evening, often in time to watch the sun set over the Narus Valley. Enjoy dinner under one of the darkest, most star-filled skies in Uganda. It is a long travel day, so we plan regular stops for meals, stretching and photographs along the way.
Read our guide to the best route from Kampala to Kidepo Valley National Park.
Morning game drive in the Narus Valley. Set out early for a game drive in the Narus Valley, the heart of Kidepo’s wildlife viewing. Permanent water sources here attract animals throughout the year, so you have excellent chances of seeing large herds of buffalo, elephants, Rothschild’s giraffes, zebras, Jackson’s hartebeest, oribi and waterbuck. Lions are often seen resting on rocky kopjes, and lucky visitors may spot leopards, cheetahs or bat-eared foxes.
Afternoon: Kidepo Valley and the Kanangorok hot springs, or a cultural visit. In the afternoon, choose between a drive to the drier Kidepo Valley in the north of the park, where you may see ostriches and visit the Kanangorok hot springs near the South Sudan border, or a cultural visit to a Karamojong community near the park, learning about their cattle-based way of life, dances and traditions. A guided nature walk from Apoka with an armed ranger is another option.
Evening. Return to your lodge for dinner, perhaps around a campfire, with the sounds of the African night all around.

Final game drive. Enjoy one last early-morning game drive in the Narus Valley, when predators are often most active and the light is perfect for photography.
Fly back to Entebbe. After breakfast, transfer to the Kidepo airstrip for your flight back to Entebbe, enjoying aerial views of northern Uganda along the way. Your flight time and route depend on the schedule, and your guide will make sure you reach the airstrip comfortably. On arrival at Entebbe, you are transferred to your hotel or the international airport for your onward journey.
Our 3 Days Kidepo Fly-In Safari explains how flights to Kidepo work.
If you prefer not to fly, a four-day road trip is possible, but it is demanding and leaves less time in each place. One approach is to drive from Kampala to Sipi on day one, continue to Kidepo on day two, enjoy a full day of game drives on day three, and make the long drive back to Kampala via Kitgum and Gulu on day four, which can take ten to twelve hours.
For a more relaxed road trip, we strongly recommend adding a fifth day so you can break the return journey in Gulu, as described in our longer itinerary. If you have even more time, our 8 Days Jinja, Sipi Falls and Kidepo Tour adds Jinja and a slower pace throughout.
Even on a short visit, Sipi offers plenty to fill your time:
Read our guides to things to do in Sipi Falls, abseiling at Sipi Falls and a mountain biking safari on Mount Elgon. Serious hikers can extend the trip with a multi-day climb; see our guide to Mount Elgon hiking.
Kidepo Valley is one of Africa’s most beautiful and least crowded wilderness areas, and it protects species found in no other Ugandan park. Highlights include:
Kidepo has also become part of efforts to return rhinos to Uganda’s national parks; read our article on rhinos reintroduced to Kidepo National Park. Pick and Transfer explains which animals are found in Kidepo, and their guide to what you can see in Uganda that you cannot see in Rwanda highlights some of Kidepo’s unique species.
A Sipi and Kidepo safari passes through Karamoja, home to the Karamojong, Dodoth and other pastoral peoples whose lives revolve around cattle. Visiting a community near Kidepo offers insight into traditional homesteads, cattle-keeping, beadwork, songs and dances. In the mountains around Kidepo, the Ik people live in remote villages with their own language and traditions. Cultural visits are best arranged through your guide or lodge to ensure they are respectful and benefit the community.
Read our guides to cultural activities in Karamoja and combining a Karamoja cultural tour with a Kidepo Valley safari.
Kidepo’s remote location, far from towns and city lights, gives it some of the darkest night skies in Uganda. On clear nights, the Milky Way stretches across the sky, and stargazing from your lodge or campsite is an unforgettable experience. Pick and Transfer shares more on stargazing and astro tours in Africa and astro tourism in Africa.
At Sipi Falls: Lodges range from comfortable mid-range properties with views over the main waterfall, such as Sipi River Lodge, to simple, affordable options like Lacam Lodge and other budget guesthouses near the falls.
In Kidepo Valley: Apoka Safari Lodge offers luxury accommodation with stunning views over the Narus Valley. Mid-range options include Kidepo Savannah Lodge and Adere Safari Lodge, while the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s Apoka Rest Camp provides budget bandas and camping close to the park headquarters. Read about Apoka Rest Camp.
The best time for this safari is during the dry seasons, from September to March, when Kidepo’s animals gather around the permanent water of the Narus Valley and roads in Karamoja are easier to travel. December to February is especially rewarding for wildlife viewing. The wet months, from April to August, bring green landscapes and stronger waterfalls at Sipi, but some roads in the northeast can become difficult and animals spread out more widely in Kidepo. Sipi Falls is beautiful year round, though trails are muddier in the rains.
A typical Kenlink Tours package includes:
Exclusions usually include international flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, drinks and optional activities such as abseiling, coffee tours, cultural visits and the hot springs excursion.
The cost of this safari depends on your choice of lodges, group size and whether you include the return flight. The main costs are transport over long distances, park fees, accommodation and, on the fly-out version, the domestic flight, which adds to the price but saves a full day of driving. Travelling as a group reduces vehicle costs per person, and choosing budget or mid-range lodges keeps the total down. Read our guide to how much it costs to visit Kidepo Valley National Park, and contact us for an up-to-date quote.
A self-drive safari to Sipi and Kidepo is possible for experienced drivers, but the long distances, remote roads and limited fuel stations in Karamoja make a guided trip with an experienced driver-guide the safer and more relaxing choice, especially for first-time visitors. If you do drive yourself, use a well-equipped 4×4, carry spare tyres and fuel, and plan each day carefully. See our car hire service and Pick and Transfer’s guide on whether you can do a self-drive safari in Uganda.
Northeastern Uganda is remote, and a little preparation goes a long way. Kidepo and Karamoja are safe to visit with an experienced guide, and the region has become increasingly popular with travellers in recent years. Still, it is wise to follow your guide’s advice, travel during daylight and check current travel information before you go.
With extra time, you can explore more of eastern and northern Uganda. Add Jinja for rafting and the source of the Nile, spend extra nights at Sipi for abseiling and longer hikes, climb Mount Elgon, or include Murchison Falls on the way back from Kidepo. Birders can combine Kidepo with other top birding areas, as on Pick and Transfer’s 18 Days Uganda Birding and Wildlife Safari. Explore more Kidepo options in our 4 Days Kidepo Wildlife Safari Adventure and the 3 Days Jinja with Sipi Falls Tour.
This safari is ideal for travellers who love wild, uncrowded places, dramatic scenery and a sense of adventure. It suits repeat visitors to Uganda who have already seen the southwestern parks, photographers, birders and anyone curious about Karamoja’s cultures. It involves long drives, so it is best for travellers comfortable spending several hours on the road. Groups and families can also enjoy it; see Pick and Transfer’s guides to the best group safaris in Uganda and safaris for families in Uganda.
