7-day Uganda gorilla and wildlife safari itinerary. Uganda is one of Africa’s most underrated yet breathtaking safari destinations. From the mist-covered forests of Bwindi to the vast savannahs of Queen Elizabeth National Park, a Uganda safari promises encounters that no photograph can fully capture. This 7-day Uganda gorilla and wildlife safari itinerary is designed to give you the perfect blend of primate tracking, big game viewing, and scenic landscapes — all expertly managed by Kenlink Tours.
Whether you are a first-time safari-goer or a seasoned wildlife enthusiast, this itinerary covers the very best Uganda has to offer. Read on to discover why Uganda is called the “Pearl of Africa.”
Your adventure begins the moment you land at Entebbe International Airport. A Kenlink Tours representative will meet you and transfer you comfortably to your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy a relaxed evening exploring the shores of Lake Victoria — the largest tropical lake in the world — or take a gentle walk through the Entebbe Botanical Gardens.
This first evening is a wonderful opportunity to acclimatize to Uganda’s warm, welcoming atmosphere and enjoy your first taste of authentic Ugandan cuisine. Your safari coordinator will give you a thorough briefing on what to expect over the next six days. Learn more about our arrival packages and Kampala hotel options before you travel.
After a hearty breakfast, begin the scenic road journey southwest toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse forests on Earth. The drive takes approximately 8–9 hours, passing through the lush tea estates of Kabale and the rolling hills of southwestern Uganda.
En route, stop at the Equator crossing at Kayabwe for photos and a quick demonstration of the Coriolis effect — a favorite stop for travellers on the Uganda gorilla safari circuit. Arrive at your forest lodge in the afternoon, settle in, and enjoy the ambient sounds of one of Africa’s oldest rainforests.
According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Bwindi is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas — a staggering conservation achievement.
Today is the highlight of your entire trip. After an early breakfast, you will be briefed by your UWA ranger guide before setting off into the dense forest. Gorilla trekking permits in Uganda are issued for specific gorilla families, and treks can last anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location that day.
When you finally come face-to-face with a mountain gorilla family — watching a silverback beat his chest, cubs tumbling playfully, or a mother cradling her infant — the moment is truly life-changing. You are allowed one full hour with the gorilla family, a regulation set by UWA to protect the gorillas’ welfare.
Gorilla trekking permits in Uganda cost USD 800 per person. Book your gorilla trekking permit well in advance through Kenlink Tours, as permits sell out months ahead — especially during peak season (June–September and December–February). Official permit bookings are managed through the Uganda Wildlife Authority portal.
After your trek, return to the lodge for a well-deserved lunch and a peaceful afternoon of birdwatching — Bwindi hosts over 350 bird species, including the African green broadbill.
After breakfast, depart Bwindi and travel north toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, passing through the scenic Ishasha sector — famous worldwide for its tree-climbing lions. These remarkable lions habitually lounge in the branches of fig trees, a behavior rarely documented anywhere else in Africa.
Spend a couple of hours on a game drive in Ishasha before continuing to the main Queen Elizabeth National Park area, where you will check into your lodge overlooking the Kazinga Channel. Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most visited park and one of the most diverse, sheltering over 95 mammal species and more than 600 bird species — making it a birding paradise within our wider safari portfolio.
Rise early for a morning game drive across the Kasenyi Plains, where large herds of African buffalo, Uganda kob, elephants, and hyenas are frequently spotted. The open savannah landscape provides excellent visibility and superb photography opportunities as the golden morning light filters across the grasslands.
In the afternoon, board a launch cruise along the Kazinga Channel — a 32-kilometre natural waterway connecting Lake Edward and Lake George. This legendary boat cruise puts you within meters of enormous pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles basking on the banks, and countless waterbirds including pelicans, African fish eagles, and rare shoebill storks.
According to Uganda Tourism Board, the Kazinga Channel boat cruise is one of Uganda’s top-rated wildlife experiences, and it’s easy to see why. Explore our Queen Elizabeth safari packages for full details on accommodation and activity options.
Begin the journey northward to Murchison Falls National Park — Uganda’s largest and oldest protected area, covering over 3,840 square kilometres. The park is named after its spectacular centrepiece: the point where the mighty River Nile forces itself through a narrow 7-metre gorge and plunges 43 metres below in one of the most powerful waterfalls on the planet.
The drive from Queen Elizabeth takes approximately 5–6 hours. Arrive in time for a sunset game drive across the north bank of the Nile, where lions, elephants, giraffes, and oribi are commonly sighted. Murchison Falls also supports one of Uganda’s largest elephant populations, making it a must-visit for anyone passionate about elephant conservation.
Check into your riverside lodge as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the Nile gold — a scene that reminds you why Uganda is the Pearl of Africa. See our Murchison Falls safari itineraries for tailored options to suit every budget.
On your final full day, wake before dawn for a game drive on the north bank — one of the best in Uganda. Leopards are occasionally spotted in the acacia woodland, and large lion prides roam the open murram plains alongside Jackson’s hartebeest, oribis, and massive Cape buffalo herds.
After breakfast, board a boat cruise along the lower Nile up to the base of the falls. Watch the water crash with extraordinary force from above while hippos wallow below and crocodiles line every muddy bank. The boat also passes through the rich delta area, a haven for the sought-after shoebill stork — a species that many birders plan their entire Uganda trip around.
After the cruise, enjoy a final lunch before your transfer back to Entebbe Airport for your departure flight. As you board your plane, you will carry with you memories of gorilla families in ancient forests, lions dozing in fig trees, and a waterfall that shook the earth beneath your feet.
