Gorilla trekkign in Ruhija Sector - Bwindi

Gorilla trekkign in Ruhija Sector – Bwindi. Nestled in the eastern reaches of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda’s Ruhija Sector offers one of the most rewarding, yet less-crowded gorilla trekking experiences in Africa. Towering above 2,300 meters in altitude, this part of Bwindi is famed for its mist-shrouded forests, biodiversity, panoramic views and exclusive gorilla encounters that few travelers get to enjoy. When you choose Kenlink Tours to design your wildlife adventure, you’re choosing expertise, authenticity, and thoughtful planning — especially for a destination as special as Ruhija.

Introduction to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in Africa. It is home to around half of the world’s remaining population of endangered mountain gorillas — a species that has captivated nature lovers, conservationists, and adventurers alike. Bwindi’s dense forest, ancient trees, thick undergrowth, and labyrinth of vines create a truly “impenetrable” landscape, making every visit feel like a journey into a hidden world.

Bwindi is divided into four primary gorilla trekking sectors — Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo, and Ruhija — each offering its own terrain, habituated gorilla families, and trekking experience. Ruhija, being one of the more remote sectors, presents an off-the-beaten-path adventure with stunning ecosystems and cultural richness embedded in every step.

Where Is Ruhija Sector?

Ruhija Sector lies on the eastern fringe of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwest Uganda. The sector sits high on ridge tops, offering awe-inspiring views of rolling hills, the Virunga Volcanoes, and vast forest expanses. Its elevation and relatively remote location mean trekking here is slightly more challenging — yet deeply fulfilling for outdoor and wildlife enthusiasts.

The isolation of Ruhija makes it a perfect destination for travelers seeking a quieter, more intimate gorilla trek — away from larger crowds that you might find in other sectors. This is where Kenlink Tours excels: arranging personalized itineraries that match your pace, interests, and adventure goals.

🦍 Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija — The Experience

📍 The Gorilla Families

Ruhija is home to four fully habituated gorilla families, including:

  • Bitukura Gorilla Family

  • Oruzogo Gorilla Family

  • Mukiza Gorilla Family

  • Kyaguliro Gorilla Family — sometimes reserved for research but often trekked with permission

These families vary in size, character, and terrain preferences — offering trekkers a dynamic and memorable encounter with wild mountain gorillas.

What to Expect on Trek

Gorilla trekking begins early in the morning with a briefing at the Ruhija park headquarters. Here, a Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) ranger will cover important safety guidelines, rules of engagement, and expectations for your time with the gorillas.

Each trekking group consists of up to eight people and a trained ranger guide. From the briefing point, trekking into the forest can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours — depending on the movement and location of the gorillas that day.

Expect to traverse steep slopes, muddy terrain, thick undergrowth and winding paths. It’s both physically engaging and rich with wildlife sightings — from colorful bird species and butterflies to colobus monkeys and forest duikers. The physical challenge only adds to the sense of accomplishment when you finally encounter a gorilla family.

The Gorilla Encounter

Once a gorilla family is located, you will have a full hour to observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat. During this time you can:

  • Watch them feed, play, and interact socially

  • Take photographs (with no flash)

  • Learn from your ranger about gorilla behavior, biology, and conservation

  • Enjoy the sheer presence of these majestic creatures up close — safely and respectfully

The entire experience — from forest walk to gorilla viewing — creates memories that last a lifetime.

Best Time to Visit Ruhija

While gorilla trekking in Ruhija is possible year-round, certain periods make the trek more comfortable and rewarding:

Dry Seasons (Best)

  • December to February

  • June to September

During these months, forest trails tend to be drier, the skies clearer, and walking conditions more pleasant. Dry weather also enhances visibility and photography opportunities throughout the trek.

Wet Season (Challenging yet Scenic)

The rainy months — March to May and October to November — can make trails muddier and more demanding. However, this is also a time when vegetation is lush, birds are abundant, and the forest bursts with life. With the right gear and guidance, even wet-season treks can be incredibly rewarding.

Kenlink Tours can advise you on the best months for your preferences, whether you seek easy trails or vibrant forest scenery.

Gorilla Trekking Permits

Gorilla trekking permits are a crucial part of the experience — and they sell out quickly due to the limited number of permits available each day. In Ruhija:

  • Foreign non-residents pay approximately USD 700–800 per permit

  • Foreign residents pay a reduced rate

  • East African citizens receive a discounted rate.

A permit grants you one hour with a gorilla family, access to UWA park guides, and contributions toward gorilla conservation and anti-poaching efforts.

Kenlink Tours handles all aspects of permit procurement — ensuring your spot is secured well in advance with legitimate booking through UWA, avoiding delays and uncertainty that can arise when booking independently.
