Uganda Gorilla Trekking Adventure Starting from Kigali. If you have ever dreamed of standing face to face with a mountain gorilla in the wild, few journeys on earth rival the Uganda gorilla trekking adventure departing from Kigali, Rwanda. The combination of two East African countries in a single trip, the dramatic landscapes you traverse, and the sheer emotional weight of that gorilla encounter makes this one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences a traveler can have. At Kenlink Tours, we have been crafting unforgettable safaris since 2010, and the Kigali-to-Uganda gorilla route remains one of our most beloved journeys for good reason.
Kigali, Rwanda’s clean, safe, and beautifully organized capital city, is one of the best-connected airports in East Africa. Many international travelers flying into the region choose to land at Kigali International Airport before crossing into southwestern Uganda. The drive from Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park takes roughly four to five hours, passing through rolling hills, terraced farmland, and the Rwandan-Ugandan border at Cyanika or Katuna — a scenic journey in itself that sets the mood beautifully for what lies ahead.
This cross-border route is not just logistically convenient; it is a cultural immersion from the very first hour. You move through two nations, hear two sets of languages, and witness the quiet rhythm of rural East African life before you even set foot in the forest.
Departing Kigali early in the morning, your Kenlink Tours driver-guide will take you northwest through Rwanda toward the Ugandan border. The drive offers sweeping views of Rwanda’s famous thousand hills before the border crossing brings you into Uganda’s lush Kigezi Highlands — a region of mist-draped mountains, banana plantations, and crater lakes that locals affectionately call “the Switzerland of Africa.”
Your destination is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site sitting at elevations between 1,160 and 2,607 metres above sea level. The park is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, sheltering around 460 individuals across 19 habituated gorilla families. As part of our Uganda Safaris portfolio, Bwindi is the undisputed jewel — a place where ancient forest meets extraordinary wildlife, and every visitor leaves fundamentally changed.
Before anything else, securing your gorilla trekking permit is the most critical step in planning this adventure. As of 2025, a Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs $800 per person for foreign non-residents, as set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). This permit grants you one precious hour with a habituated gorilla family in their natural habitat, accompanied by a professional ranger guide.
Permits are strictly limited — only eight people per gorilla family per day — which means they sell out months in advance, particularly during peak season from June to September and December to February. We strongly advise booking your permit at least three to six months ahead. At Kenlink Tours, we handle the entire permit booking process on your behalf, including liaising directly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to guarantee your space.
If you are interested in a deeper, more immersive experience, a Gorilla Habituation Experience is also available at $1,500 per person, allowing you to spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated family alongside researchers and trackers.
You will wake early to a cool Bwindi morning, likely wrapped in mist. After a briefing at the park headquarters, you will be assigned to a gorilla family and set off into the forest with your guide and armed rangers. Bwindi has four trekking sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo — and your permit will specify which one you trek in. Our team carefully selects the sector most suited to your fitness level and lodge location.
The trek itself can take anywhere from thirty minutes to six hours depending on where the gorilla family has wandered. You will push through thick vegetation, scramble up muddy slopes, and follow vine-tangled trails — and then, without warning, there they are. A silverback, enormous and utterly unhurried, seated among the ferns. Young gorillas tumbling and wrestling nearby. Mothers nursing infants with a tenderness that will catch you completely off guard.
That one hour feels like a lifetime. Guests often describe it as the most powerful wildlife encounter of their lives. Our Uganda Trekking Safaris page captures more about the full scope of what primate trekking in Uganda involves, from gorillas to chimpanzees and everything in between.
One of the greatest advantages of starting from Kigali is that you can seamlessly extend your trip deep into Uganda. The classic multi-destination itinerary pairs Bwindi gorilla trekking with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest National Park, game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and a serene stay at Lake Bunyonyi.
Our popular 8-day tour from Kigali covering Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale, and Bunyonyi is one of the most complete safari experiences available in East Africa, combining primates, the Big Five, boat cruises on the Kazinga Channel, and unforgettable lakeside relaxation.
For those seeking the full wildlife scope of Uganda, our Big Five and Primate Safari packages cover lions, elephants, buffaloes, and leopards alongside the gorilla and chimpanzee encounters — a comprehensive East Africa adventure in a single trip.
Adventurous travelers who prefer complete independence behind the wheel should also explore our Uganda Gorilla Safari on Self-Drive option, where we equip you with a well-maintained 4×4, offline maps, and expert pre-trip guidance so you can drive the route at your own pace.
Uganda’s gorilla trekking is available year-round, but the dry seasons offer the most comfortable trekking conditions. June through September is the peak season — trails are drier, forest paths are easier to navigate, and the morning light is perfect for photography. December through February offers another dry window with fewer crowds.
The wet months of March to May and October to November bring lush, dramatic greenery and quieter parks, but muddy trails can make the trek more physically demanding. No matter the season, the gorillas are always worth it. Check our About Uganda guide for a detailed seasonal breakdown to help you choose the right travel window for your goals.
Packing right makes a real difference to your comfort on the trail. Bring solid, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support, lightweight long-sleeved shirts and trousers in neutral colours, a rain jacket, garden gloves for gripping vegetation on steep slopes, insect repellent, a hat, sunscreen, and at least 1.5 litres of water. A small daypack is ideal. Leave the bright colours and strong perfumes at the lodge — gorillas are sensitive to unfamiliar smells and sudden movements.
A porter can be hired at the park gate for a modest fee, and we strongly encourage this both as practical support on steep terrain and as direct income for the local community.
